1980s era KRLD question

I came across a casette tape at my wife's grandmother's house as we were cleaning it up the other day. It was a 1980s or 90s era program on KRLD. At the top of the hour, they do the station ID, and it went something like this: "Galaxy 6, Transponder 3, Channel 61.7, serving America by satellite, KRLD, Dallas, Texas."

First, I thought it interesting that it was "Dallas, Texas" and not "Dallas-Fort Worth." But, all the other stuff, was that just clever marketing, or did it actually mean something? Was KRLD's signal that powerful, or what?

I'm kind of curious about that myself. I used to listen to Ernie Brown's "Texas USA" and "Charlie Jones Overnight"(yes, I know it's still on- ;)..I don't work nights anymore) back in the 90's, and I remember that, too...they would always say that at the top of the hour right before they'd cut to CBS news.

...and I thought I was the only one who noticed little things like that. I feel better. :)

I remember that well, and they used it sporadically into the early 90s. As I recall, in the pre-internet days, there was a little "push" for people who owned the large satellite dishes to pull in radio stations as well as TV. I don't think KRLD sent up their signal strictly for this purpose, but it was flying through space anyway for the taking. (Jody was doing his afternoon talk show over there then; he might could shed more light on this for us.)

I know this is off topic from the original thought, but do any of you radio veterans remember Rodney Runyan? I believe his radio name from the 70s at either KRLD or WFAA was Jeff Dale. He passed about a year ago, and it would be great to get anything someone might remember. We know that he was a DJ at times and did some behind the scenes work with the Cowboy game production on KRLD in the 80s, but he did not move with it to KVIL. I have a fondness for his granddaughter (my daughter) and would love to give her more information on him. May not care for his daughter anymore, but he was a good man. Thanks.

The liner was a gimmick. It merely denoted the bird used to carry overnight programming to affiliates. Voiced by Scott Carpenter and later Randy Brown.
