1982 Miami Ratings

My library card allows me to access newspapers from about 1982 to the present. Below are the oldest ratings I could find. Can anybody give updates of what happened to each station?

This list sure brings back memories. I never lived in South Florida, but my aunt lived in Pompano Beach around that time and when we used to visit her, we always had 97 A1A on the radio.

What I find amazing is that the #1 station only had a 6.9 share. Sure that's common these days, but back in the '80s (especially as far back as '82) the top 1 or 2 stations were always in double digits. I guess South Florida radio listening has always been fragmented.

"each" station......That would probably take 10 posts, or more.....WLYF is still pretty much at the top, after having evolved its' format from Easy Listening to Adult Contemporary.

One of the things, however, that should be noted since then, is that the Hispanic population has grown considerably in Broward (and even further north), so that low Hispanic population in that county is not an issue anymore.....So you have stations like WCMQ-FM and WAMR (the former WQBA-FM), posting high results in a combined Miami-Fort Lauderdale book....As for WRHC, well I don't think they even show anymore anywhere near the top, middle or bottom...An issue probably more of programming. I also think it's been a while since a Rock station (like WSHE was), posted as high as #7, or that Y-100 was #3 (I'm guessing these are 12+ numbers).

Wow, those numbers and call letter bring back memories. July 1982 was when I came to the market to do evenings at #7 rated WSHE. Despite being grossly underpaid, those were fun days.
