1988: Cleveland PD frame WKYC reporter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InYbjG16J8g

Anyone remember this? Dan Orlousky does a investigative piece about the Cleveland PD writing "dummy" parking tickets so the Cleveland PD issues an arrest warrant to intimidate and harass Orlousky.

This was really WKYC at it's height after the 1985 debacle where they were heavily ridiculed for doing a five-part investigative series on UFO encounters in the Cleveland area as a rating stunt.

They recovered the next year when they revealed that two rogue Shaker Heights police officers who were supposed to be "undercover" as drug dealers had become actual drug dealers instead and were keeping all the profits and weren't making any arrests.

It's safe to say that Channel 3 News was the 19 Action News of the 1980's. Reminds me the mishap 19 had with Jane Campbell back in 2004. Of course, this was when 19 did reports on anyone who was famous, who in turn would get upset at the station for the coverage.

Like with 19 in the 90's even through today, 3 was a revolving door in the 80's. The anchor in the video (Bob McBride) would soon leave months after that newscast aired, and was replaced by Leon Bibb with the female chair being filled in August of 1988 by Jill Beach after Doreen Gentzler left the previous year.

WKYC was a laughing stock at 3rd place throughout (4th for a while after WUAB started the "Ten O'Clock News") behind the more established Newscenter 8 at WJW and TV5 Eyewitness News at WEWS. There was a brief period when the 11pm newscast on 3 ranked second in 1989 and '90 beating out 5, who would lose out to 19 at 11 for second around 2004 through 2006 (?).
