1995-1996 Affiliation Shuffle

I don't know about where you live, but we have five stations in Phoenix airing several hours each of local news 7 days a week.

Just out of curiosity how are the Phoenix TV stations ranked in ratings these days? I recall KPNX gaining an advantage for a good decade there but then that quickly evaporated back in the early 2010’s.

Do channel numbers really matter any more?
some people higher numbered stations stations are cheap stations broadcasting from a closet that are frequently traded in poker games and ran by the owner's nephew, even though now they may be technically broadcasting on VHF, but back then they were Mom & Pop low budget, not corporate low budget

KDNL?? Really? I hope you realize that the only kind of news presence KDNL had before it picked up ABC was “The Financial Observer”, an all-day broadcast of a stock ticker with occasional appearances by Lee Coffee, either to read a summary or to do interviews. St. Louis is a conservative market in its habits; for example, there are probably people who still watch KMOV just because they remember the glory days with Julius Hunter and Steve Schiff when it was KMOX-TV. No one these days is going to build a TV news presence from scratch, and that’s what KDNL would have to do. I think Disney is smart enough to realize that.
KDNL did launch a 9PM newscast shortly before they switched from FOX to ABC, Sinclair simply didn't want to put any $ into their transmitter in a market with ingrained habits obsessed over were you went to high school, Simpsons reruns were the highest rated syndicated product on that station at one point

Which was my original point. "Let's go watch the news on the station that used to have Mr. Patches," said no one in particular.

NBC had little choice when the affiliation switch was announced: KSMO-TV channel 62 did not appear interested, and the "YFC" in KFYC-TV channel 50 stood for "Youth for Christ". KSHB was the only credible possibility, and everyone knew it.
And had KSMO affiliated with NBC, the network would've ended up with it's own "Detroit" problem as KSMO didn't even have a news department whereas KSHB did

NBC would've had to buy KSMO to whip it into shape whereas they didn't have to go that far with KSHB

YouTube TV does not recognize OTA channel numbers other than by the station logos they display. Channels can be arranged any way one prefers. After all, channel numbers are irrelevant on the Internet.

Personally, I go by OTA channel number, then sports channels. Almost everything else gets blanked out. But that is strictly my choice.
Nowadays YouTube TV doesn't even use OTA channel numbers anymore. Just network branding ALA CBS 4, ABC 7, NBC 9, FOX 31 etc

do advertisers care about the people old enough to remember those days?
It would suit me if ABC went back to WGHP and KTVI but I don't see any chance of that happening. They'd have to pick up network shows to fill slots they're selling and pocketing the money (examples: Good Morning America, ABC daytime, World News Tonight, 3 hours of primetime instead of 2, Jimmy Kimmel).

No way would Nexstar move Fox off those channels. What would they to gain by doing that?? Their goal is to grow The CW (The network THEY own). Why do you think KWGN 2 is a CW O&O & Fox has been relegated to KDVR 31 despite having the more popular newscasts of the two stations??

And in St. Louis, they already have The CW on KPLR 11 so nothing to be gained by making a move there. ABC is just going to have to HOPE Gray or TEGNA have a falling out with CBS or NBC (Which is LESS likely than pigs growing wings & flying) & sit on newsless Sinclair-owned KDNL 30 & just didn't have to do whay CBS *HAD* to do in Detroit back in 1995

No, I said I don't see WGHP and KTVI going back to ABC. Regardless of Nexstar's intentions, both stations would have to give up timeslots to ABC and cut down their potential revenues. Whatever would happen with KDNL would probably happen to WXLV as well; here in North Carolina ABC would have to hope for a CBS falling out with Tegna or NBC with Hearst. WFMY (Tegna) will drop CBS when the moon really turns to cheese; likewise, WXII (Hearst) will drop NBC when that happens.

With The Flying Pigs flying over it too 😁

The difference between the 1994-1996 affiliate shuffle and today is that it was about getting the top spots on Cable TV when that happened with Fox getting the NFL deal and new affiliates was the big one along with Disney merging with ABC as the other one.

As of 2025 Nexstar is trying to pull off the largest affiliation shuffle by attempting to take over Tegna if approved. If that is approved the several cities would have to cut their current affiliations because of Nexstar's role in owning the CW such as KUSI San Diego being converted into a CW affiliate or KONG Seattle being converted into a CW affiliate if approved. The premise on this one is about ATSC 3.0.

Nexstar should make a deal in St. Louis, Missouri by Swapping out KTVI Channel 2 with Sinclair Broadcast Group KNDL - TV Channel 30 for FOX. Nexstar Media Group should acquire KNDL - TV Channel 30 in St. Louis, Missouri from Baltimore, Maryland based Sinclair Broadcast Group for KTVI - TV Channel 2. E. W. Scripps Company (Scripps Broadcasting Holdings LLC) in Cincinnati, Ohio should acquire KTVI - TV/DT St. Louis, Missouri from Irving, Texas based Nexstar Media Group, Inc and turn it into a local FOX Television Station affiliate. KTVI - TV Channel 2 would return as the local ABC Television Network affiliate station in St. Louis, Missouri under E.W. Scripps and would be branded as “2 ABC” St. Louis with a Circle 7 logo look with a white 2 in it middle in a blue background circle. While KNDL - TV would be branded as “FOX 30” KNDL - TV St. Louis under Nexstar Media Group where would rebuild a newsroom for their FOX 30 News, NBCUniversal should acquire WDAF - TV Channel 4 Kansas City, Missouri from Nexstar Media Group and return it as a new local NBC Owned & Operated Television Station in return E.W. Scripps would acquire the FOX Television Network for KSHB-TV Channel 41 in Kansas City, Missouri, Nexstar should acquire KCWE - TV/DT Channel 29 Kansas City, Missouri from Hearst Television (Hearst Stations Inc.) where this station is already a CW Owned & Operated Television Network Station in Kansas City, Missouri.

And I don't think you get it. The Nexstar-TEGNA deal is predicated on ownership caps being loosened further, so there aren't going to be any "deals" as you describe in that hard-to-read run-together post.

This reads more like the kind of "fantasy scenario" that I have seen management toss people for.

Those must be some really good mushrooms.

No need for fantasy - look up the history of KTVI sometime. That was even before a tornado hit it.

And Channel 30's call letters are KDNL.
