Mike Stern, PD of WKQX/Q101 & Tim Dukes, PD of WLUP (Loop) were fired this morning.
More info to follow.

Like this was big news. Both stations have been failing in the ratings. The suits are trying to regain control. Terestial radio is dead!

Go Sirius!!!

Dream on. When is some one going to say the D word? Even thought it will never ever happen. I expect a fake "Engergy 101" logo and playlist in about ten minutes.

Nonononono, sheesh, get it right.

BOTH stations should be programmed to compete with Elroy R C Smith because NO ONE IS SAFE NO MATTER HOW GOOD HIS BOOKS ARE!!!!!!

We return you now to your reasonably scheduled programming....

I think Emmis will be "movin" one of those formats for sure.

Even with LOVE on the air and with their 3rd format adjustment, there is still an opportunity to come in and do that format better. If BJ was smart, he would not only change the positioning statement for LOVE, but he would change the name of the station as well. LOVE does not mean KC and THe Sunshine Band. We're talking marketing 101 here.

From AllAccess:

ALL ACCESS confirms that major changes have happened today at EMMIS/CHICAGO as Alternative WKQX (Q101) and Classic Rock WLUP (97.9 THE LOOP) VP/Programming MIKE STERN and WLUP PD TIM DUKES are both out......

"Both MIKE STERN and TIM DUKES are wonderful programmers, but we have two amazing brands in Q101 and THE LOOP, and we want to maximize our efforts as we prepare for PPM which will be here 11 months from now. We need a programmer that will help us put a strategic plan together and lead us into the new world of PPM. We are going to begin running these stations now, as if PPM was already here."

NYREN added, "This programmer will have great team assistance in Q101 APD/MD SPIKE ESKIN, and WLUP APD/MD BILL KLAPROTH. I've not talked to one person yet, but this new programmer for both stations will be a visionary leader and strategic planner. We need someone to manage these brands, who can run the golden thread through all of them tying the programming into the Internet, texting, marketing, promotion, and all manners of spreading the brands."

WOW MAYBE IT REALLY IS ROCKET SCIENCE!!!

"MORE RESEARCH LESS GUT!!!!"

See...no format change. I guess Emmis doesn't want to share the love of their .07 rated Movin station in LA. Gee, I wonder why?

Will Emmis bring up the only real rock expert in their company - Rick Balis at KSHE - for his second tour of duty? Chicago is his hometown and he was WLUP's PD in the mid 90's for a couple of years.

That would be the excellent choice.

um...how much income/revenue/money has been lost since...er...that morning show was not kept on 101?

i'm wonderin'....

Sounds like some changes at MerchMart..could indeed happen. Hasn't it been a long time on/off rumor that Q would go hip hop/rap like Emmis in NYC and LA...and lets face it, a Movin' station is Chicago would be a great compliment. Get someone like Terry Fox to program and stock the urbanised Q101 with talent. Movin' could be run by any of the Emmis adult format PD's with maybe Brian Middleton in mornings or middays and some of the old B96 and/or 92 KISS/Energy jocks playing the urban oldies.....oh AND RECURRENTS...on the movin station which would mean the LOOP would ironically become of all things....a station that plays some disco!!

But does it not seem odd timing for LOVE to "relaunch" with mornings, the website and coming soon a new PM driver....maybe Bonneville was hearing/sensing Emmis changes coming and want to adjust LOVE to pre-empt Emmis. But if this Emmis Overhaul were to play out...Bonneville would probaby then flip LOVE to rock and become the ROCK COMPANY in Chicago, minus XRT of course.

BONNEVILLE ROCKS!! HOLY MITT ROMNEY!!

Food for thought:

--Both Q and the Loop are being re-engineered for a PPM world. One of the signals will still be a music format, but the other signal would have to be some form of FM talker. Chicago is one of the few markets where AM still generates revenue/ratings, and PPM will only amplify this for the big three (WGN. WLS, WBBM). A Free FM clone is not the answer. But something hipper, faster-paced and targeted for the 30+ listener could move the needle. Oddly enough, the foundation for such a station is in place on The Morning Fix, which can't decide whether it's Daily Show Radio or NPR for Hipsters. If the Fall Out Boy crowd can't embrace it as their morning show, maybe young-end would-be AM newsradio listeners would. The right PD can find the hole it needs to fit and make it work for the format. This also makes sense given their one-PD-for-both-stations strategy.

--Mancow still does not have a flagship station in Chicago. Yes, there's still bad blood there. No, I would not rule out Cow returning to Emmis in some capacity. Yes, his show is much different now, but when his show went away, so did a big a chunk of TSL and revenue. If that sounds too pie-in-the-sky, what other talent does Emmis make a play for (currently in the market or otherwise)? A cume shift has to happen somewhere to make either station a player again, and that can happen sooner than later with the right talent grab.

--Arbitron's white papers on PPM trials in Philly are a few years old, but bear another look: http://www.arbitron.com/portable_people_meters/papers_presentations.htm Don't think Marv & Co. aren't pouring over ways to exploit PPM's new methodologies. And certainly he, Cummings and Steal have much more recent and compelling data at their disposal on how to do this.

--Clear Channel is not a PPM player and doesn't appear that they will be anytime soon. If CC doesn't encode in Chicago (as is the case in Philly, and subsequently L.A.) what formats/talent can Emmis seize from CC now that gives them leverage when PPM is rolled out?

Anyone know who is running the ship over at emmis, with their pds gone?
