Hey all. I'm one of the PD's at an upstate NY college that is entirely student-run. We're unique in that we have two stations that are independent of one another. One is an indie/alt rock college station thats an FCC-regulated FM station. It serves the campus and the communitty around the college. The other station is a "Top 40" station that broadcasts on the campus channel 5 and webcasts. This has worked out gfine in the past because the stations were never in direct competition with one another. Sure, the FM was the flagship but it worked out well. The Webcast station would simulcast a few select shows and sporting events that were deemed important but other then that, they had their own distinct programming. I got an email from our GM today that he found room in our budget to simulcast the FM station, independent of the "top 40" station. There have also been talks to simulcast the FM programming on the campus tv station during off-hours. This leaves me in a pickle. I'm the pd of the "top-40" webcast station. Now, what was once our "niche" of being the only station on campus to stream live online is being eroded. What I can make is that if the GM's plans do go through, my station will suffer from the competition in lack of members(FM was always more enticing and now that theres a webcast specifically for it..) and probably lack of creative programming since live shows will be at an all-time low. I really feel up a creek here. I honestly dont know what to do. Should I try and change formats, maybe try n find another cheap medium? There used to be an AM carrier for the top 40 station when our organization was am/fm, what about getting that back? Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
