2 Market CHR's, how do they make it?

How is it that some markets, like Louisville and Manhattan, KS, can thrive with 2 CHR/Top 40 stations while some cannot?

If their numbers are close to each other in ratings (but not buried at the bottom of the ratings), then why not? If one is blowing out the other then the market can't handle two.

Look at Atlanta, Star 94 and Q100 they are both holding their own.

Many markets have 2 country and hip hop outlets (or at least one hip hop and one CHR/RHY...which are very similar to each other).

Well in many cases, one CHR will lean Rock-Adult while one leans Rhythmic-youth Friendly.. In the case of Louisville,,, actually WDJX and WZKF sound almost identical,,, although for a time WZKF leaned almost all Hip Hop and also when Radio One owned WDJX they were fairly rhythmic too,, but today both stations are well balanced..

In the case of manhatten KS... Power hits 97.5 is very youth friendly,, plays lots of currents and quick on new music, and plenty of Rhythmic Fair, while Z96.3 has an Alternative Rock---kinda Adult Lean... Powerhits 97.5 is heritage in the market, although they moved from 94.5 a few years ago, and for a few years called itself THE BIG KAT,,,, the Call Letters and CHR format have stood the test of time... Power hits 97.5 can even be heard on a car radio about 60 miles into Missourie past kansas city,, but really only serves the area from Topeka to just past Salina,, but their 100 KW signal goes much farther than that.. in the mid 90s when they were Power 94.5,, they used to have a sweeper that said they were the 100,000 watt Monster...
