2 minute spots

It really caught my by surprise when I came across a 2 minute spot in the program logs tonight. I've been in radio for 10 years on & off and I can't recall ever seeing a 2 minute spot from a car dealer. I do remember 2 minute political ads and also longer spots purchased by the record labels promoting their new artists, etc, but I just can't remember a car dealer (or any other retail business) airing 2 minute spots (ESPECIALLY in this economic climate) I've never been on the sales side of things so I'm wondering if it is more economical for the client to purchase these spots? I have heard two 1-minute spots back to back from a dealership but never a 2 minute one. I'm not sure about it all but it immediately struck me as great salesmanship from somebody in the sales dept. It's too bad the spot is AWFUL. It's an agency spot too.

When WBHG in Meredith was owned by Sconnix they sold 2 1/2 minute spots to Auto Wholesalers in Hooksett. It was like a mini infomercial. Client (like his TV ads) recorded them himself. Painful.

Have you ever heard an ad for an auto dealership that wasn't painful? Or for that matter, 98% of spots that are client-voiced/written? Capitol Craftsman anyone?

Good point. I often wonder why many car dealers insist on the irritating hard-sell approach.

Car dealers spend a lot of money and I think a lot of sales people are grateful for the big buys and just don't tell them that, that is not the best approach in all cases.
