2 new AMs for the market

Radio-Locator has an interesting CP listed for a new station on 1270 in Aurora, IN. This is a move of the old WORX-AM, now WXGO. The daytime-only station would shoot some power towards the city with a big lobe towards northern Kentucky and the west side.

There are also two applications for a daytimer with critical hours on AM 1030, as WGYV in Aurora. One application is for 500 watts with virtually no signal toward Cincinnati, and the other with 250 and a directional pattern that goes into NKY.

It's pretty far out, but a new AM haas been applied for in Ripley, OH on AM 1180 with 1kw daytime and 625 watts CH. They plan to use the WAOL tower in Bracken County. They originally wanted AM 1200 at 10kw directed southeast, but amended it.

As a Madison resident for the first 18 years of my life, I find this news somewhat sad. WXGO was and still is a good outlet for local news and helped carry high school sports and some professional sports team broadcasts.

Not only that, but the area is somewhat limited on the number of strong signals that can be received already. The hilltop regions in the area don't have problems pulling in stations from Louisville and even Cincinnati, but even strong car radios struggle to pull in great signals in the downtown and riverfront areas in that region. I find it sad that the area may lose that outlet.

Besides, the CP doesn't even look like it will contribute significantly to the Cincinnati area... there is barely any coverage anywhere, except some decent signal in the northern KY and downtown regions.

Does a large metropolis need to strip a small town & countryside of one of its few signals? People already complain about the programming on other AMs in Cincinnati... what difference is another rimshot going to make?
 
I share your sentiments. One more little weak AM signal is not as important to a large metro area like this as it would be to the people of Madison. However, radio is a business and if the owners believe there are more sales to be had by moving closer to a major market, then most people will follow the money.
