2 new TV stations in Chicago signed on today (1/27/06)...

Two new analog TV stations in Chicago hit the air today.

WLFM-LP channel 55:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=TX981652.html

And

WCHU-LP channel 61:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=TX991744.html

Both are broadcasting color bars and a test audio tone as of Friday
evening. Both are directional to the west, southwest and south.

I am getting snowy signals from both stations from DeKalb. Both appear to be broadcasting from the John Hancock tower, and both have 50 kw of power, according to the FCC website, though both are incorrectly listed as having a city of license of Rochelle.

Both stations are owned by Venture Technologies, Inc., which have a history
of low-power and full power stations across the country, airing Spanish, Home Shopping Network, ethnic and independent programming.

Do we want to play "guess the format" of these new stations?

And, analog 60 (WXFT) was off the air this evening for a time this evening. Looks like the analogs are having the fun today...

I am on the near NW side of Chicago

2400N and 3200W can't see anything on 55 and can't make out anything on 61 other than to see their is something broadcasting on it.

It would be nice to see a low power HSN now that I don't have cable.

I think it's odd that there is something on 61 and 55 toward the south. I used to live in the South Suburbs and Channel 56 from St John (transmitter) Indiana is VERY strong out there. As is Channel 62, from their Tinley Park Transmitter.
When I lived in the South Suburbs 62 was THE strongest signal.

I noticed LP 48 is broadcasting an ESPN game, Marquette vs Pittsburgh

Actually 56's tower is in Cedar Lake. I see everyday I go to and from work. It's near WZVN's 500' tower, but It's ironic that there's LP stations on 55 & 61. I'm surprised neither 56 nor 60 objected to having the LP stations on 1st adjacents, especially 60, since they're on top of the Sears Tower.

Venture Technologies, Inc.,(under the name of Spartan TV Inc.) also own the Lansing,Michigan soon to maybe be CW or Independent TV station WHTV UPN18
they just signed a 3 year deal to be housed at the CBS lansing affiliate WLNS after 4 years at ABC's affiliate mistake WLAJ

Good folks Venture is

That is actually a game produced by ESPN Regional Television, a/k/a ESPN+Plus.
Those games are syndicated.

Why would anyone establish a TV station on 61 at this time?

Aren't Channel 61 through 69 going to be re-assigned to non-broadcast applications?

Yes! I bet you 10 to 1 that the formats are, going to be another
Spanish and Ethnic or Foreign programing, in which we have way
too many of them here in the city of Chicago!
Why do we need more or why do we have to have another one of them
programs anyway? I or most of us don't understand their language anyway!
They should bring back the old movie classics, in which we haven't
seen in years.

On every TV I have, the signal on 61 is nearly impossible to get without intermod/bleedover/desense from 60 and 62. Since 60 and 61 transmit from virtually the same location, with 5,000,000 watts on 60 and something like only 50k on 61, it won't matter where you live -- 61 will be really tough to get on many TV sets.

TVs can pick up adjacent channels fine if the channels' power levels are comparable, but the difference is massive here.

I still ask the question: Why would anybody put a station on the air on a channel over 60 when in only a matter of a couple of years Channel 61 through 69 will be vacated anyway?

I hope 55 is 24/7 fishing shows in gaelic.

Probably to get their foot in the door and be able to move off those channels and be guaranteed at least some coverage in Chicago after the digital transition. If they waited (since the rest of the band is jammed up), then when new frequencies open up, they would be competing with other stations that want new signals in Chicago.
