Yeah, WCKO 102.7 did a "Black Gold" format back in the 70's. At the time, it was the FM sister to WRBD ("Rockin Big Daddy") 1470, which was doing a R&B format of varying degrees into the late 80's. Eventually, WCKO took a stab at the progressive FM route as K-102 for about 3 years, its was a mix of what is now known as classic rock, with some new wave, metal and even punk tossed in. If you tuned in at the right time in the overnights, you'd hear the jocks cheat with the Sex Pistols and Ramones. Never could beat WSHE, thus WCKO sold and became "Majic" or as the K-102 fans called it "Tragic" 102.7. As for 1470, bought by Beasley (or HSR Radio, who was bought by Beasley), and the old 980 AM Motivation format of WWNN was transplanted onto 1470. A lot of the WKCO staff ended up on other stations. Denny James, a long time favorite on 98.7 FM WKGR and 92.7 WZZR, started out as the WCKO mascot, yeah, he jumped around in a Kangaroo suit. Also on the staff was Jeff Gonzer, who came from the "Mighty Met" KMET Los Angeles, the mother of all Progressive Rock FM's, the one that served as the model for what WCKO wad doing in the first place.
And the PD for ZETA/WZTA 94.9 (heck what was his name) was a jock/MD on WCKO for a spell, eventually moving to the bigs over at WSHE across town.
