20 Years Ago Today... WFLZ

September 25, 1989:
Power 93 The Power Pig....
It would be wrong not to acknowledge the people and attitude that made radio great in Tampa Bay 20 years ago this morning. For those that were here... you know what I'm talking about. I can't think of one current station that compares to those days now.

I enjoyed them putting the screw to Q105 then.

However... I sure miss the oldies on Z93 and the excellent jocks at that time. I think most of them stayed on with the Power Pig.

I believe the inheritor of the cool attitude of Power 93 would be Wild 94-1. The jocks really reach out to the audience and you can tell they truly embrace the station.
The current FLZ is simply too dull to listen to, at this time, and the jocks may well be transmitting from San Antonio to fill in the blank name of city.

Sorry CC but that is how it sounds to me.

Cutting edge at the time and certainly thinking way outside the box. Never forget meeting my pal Brad James at the old Maxwells in Palm Harbor one night. He drives up in this ugly pink beat up van with Power Pig scribbled on the side of it. Maxwell's windows faced the parking lot and the folks inside went wild! Great marketing at the time.

Power Pig... Hello? We could definitely use them back now more than ever. They're now a shell of their former selves thanks to CC's mismangement and lack of direction. :(

Hard to believe it's been 20 years. Boy was that a station full of energy and an in-your-face attitude. It was fresh, and we could use something like that again today.

I first heard WFLZ as the "Power Pig" on a trip to Florida to visit my in-laws in late 1992. I have a couple of airchecks that include "No panties Thursday" and some other raunchy call-ins.

I can remember that at the time, they had the WORST audio processing in the universe!

One of the aircheck tapes I have (it could be also from early 1993) has "Slam" by Onyx...

The bass beats were punching holes in the audio so badly that it sounded like someone quickly cranking the volume up and down almost all the way on every beat!

It seemed to remain somewhat this way through 1994.

By early 1995, they had dropped the 'Power Pig' and were simply "93-three, FLZ" It also seemed that the audio processing had improved around that time.

The whole point of the changes made in the radio business over the past 15 years has been to ensure that something like that could never happen today.

"spectacularly successful?" to my knowledge no Tampa radio station has in 20 years achieved the revnue WRBQ was doing in the late 80's. It may be fun to watch institutions be detroyed but would it not be better to see someone build something?
