2005: The Year That Pumped Up Buffalo Radio

January 2005: CIXL 91.7, a Canadian station ditches country for adult hits as Giant FM
March 2005: Wild 101, another Canadian station shifts from CHR-rhythmic to CHR-pop, taking at aim at Kiss 98.5
May 2005: WBUF 92.9 dumps FM talk for Jack

C'mon, we've still got 2 oldies stations around here, one on FM, the other on AM. I wish KB could flip to Air America! Leave 104.1 alone, since it does so well in Buffalo! Oldies is dying. WBUF made an awesome move to Jack!

Boy are we pumped

Yeah, and less than 1% of the audience noticed.

Without Citadel to rep them - and make them part of combo buys - watch them drop below a 2.0 share.

> May 2005: WBUF 92.9 dumps FM talk for Jack... WBUF made an awesome move to Jack!

Awesome, or awful? Let's check back the first book after Howard is gone - if they're still around.

Pass, I think you need to put down the doobie and spend a little time in detox.

Boy dont you sound like an ass!

Hey ROX was that really neccesary!! Maybe you need to take a few more Prozacs to calm your sorry self down!!! NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree with wbuf, but we should change 1230 am not kb or whtt....if people in buffalo want to hear big band, the stuff your grandparents listened to, they can tune to am 740 as from toronto as they have a better signal.

What's with the Prozac admonishment, Maggie? Think you laid that one on me a few weeks back. It's getting old.

You want to see board mayhem? Visit Syracuse-Utica some time. This board is a testiment to decorum by comparison.

Rox is right. Jack's off to a fine start, but the race is a marathon, not a sprint. There's a lot of ground to cover. As to Giant, I like the station, as I've posted, but I'm in the <1 share (Buffalo-Niagara Falls MSA) that listens to the station.

Re: He Simply Has An Opinion

Yes, the CNY board is awful. This one is quite civil in comparison.

The rumored demise of AM radio is greatly exaggerated and especially the music formats on AM. I regularly check the arbitron ratings of several different markets including Buffalo and I'm pleased to report the overall numbers (rating %) is still steady at 24 to 25% of the listening audience tuning into Buffalo area AM stations. Regionally you can still find plenty of music formats on AM stations in mid America and they do quite well thank you.

Mom and Pop AM is still doing fairly well in rural markets even the stations that play music. The key to making it work is to provide local on air talent plus local information, news, weather and local sports. Physiologically speaking the human race is not much different than 2,000 years ago. Most people still identify with their local neighors and stores and they like to hear someone they know from right down the street on the radio. And they like it even more when they discuss issues of importance right down the street.

AM radio in metro markets would see more of a resurgence if the corporations would invest a little time and money as opposed to simply turning over so many AM stations into satellite programmed clones. One can only take so much of the national issues or "canned" formats.

Re: WC WALKER AND MIKE RADKNOWSKI MAEK TH MOST SENCE

Thanks!

I travel quite a bit and naturally I am tuned into the car radio for hours at a time. There still are a lot of good local AM stations in the Midwest that offer music along with everything else I mentioned.

When I lived in Medina I used to tune into Casa Rico on WJJL. I'm happy to see his show is alive and well. WNY still has some good stations for those of us that prefer it over FM.

No no Prozac on you Rad!! I like you way to much...

Re: WC WALKER AND MIKE RADKNOWSKI MAEK TH MOST SENCE

***I'll pass. I don't need to know any personal dirt on anyone that posts here. I merely said "thanks" to someone that paid me a compliment. The facts I posted concerning AM radio were right on target and she recognized this. This in no way changes anything that I posted.

Imagine if Joel Giambra ran Clear Channel.:) WNY has a habit of electing the wrong people into positions of authority (as does much of the country) and they end up being abused by these elected officials in more ways than one but most notably in the wallet. If Erie County and the City of Buffalo can ever straighten out the fiscal mess and learn how to properly and efficiently manage a city and county then prosperity will return to the Buffalo area. Until then the people will be held hostage and abused by a bunch of spoiled brats that want to exert negative and undue control over the population of the region.

Indeed, but "Joann" is a special case. "She" is a long-recognized troll on this board who posts long, rambling, incoherent messages about being the ex-wife of the owner of a small Niagara Falls AM station. Of course, the station's owner has no idea who or what this person is.

"Joann" is so bad, one time "she" actually managed to file an FCC application associated with that station. It was quickly shut down, of course, because "Joann" doesn't exist, except in the twisted mind of someone posting on this board.

"Joann's" FCC Filing

I actually found a link to this. It was quickly dismissed by the FCC. It's filled with "funny" comments, and the phone number "Joann" supplies is a Virgin Mobile prepaid cellphone that may or may not exist:

http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101010437&formid=316&fac_num=39517

Messing with the FCC can get you in very serious trouble. They don't really have a sense of humor.

Format needs a new title.

The "O" word is 'the kiss' for any station.

Here in Cincinnati we had an oldies station (WCKY 1530) which flipped to AA. Their ratings fell from 2.0 to 0.8! If WWKB wants to improve their ratings, perhaps they could air the Savage Nation.
Edited by Len14043 on 06/18/05 06:57 PM.
