For Program Director/Manager, I would nominate Jeff Rafter. He has done a great job with WJRZ and WMGQ. I worked for him for a number of years and have to say he was very fair and very professional. A great guy all around.
As for the rest of NJ radio, how about a "Worst "
WOBM FM is a borefest musically.

Three days and no responses. Guess it shows the state of radio in NJ.

I at least figured there would be responses from industry people putting themselves, their co-workers, or their employers over.

But as a NON-radio professional, I'm nominating someone for
MOST RESILIENT RADIO PERSONALITY: RAY ROSSI

The "new" Jersey Guys show is pretty much unlistenable, but credit must be given to Rossi for holding up his end of the deal. Considering the extreme drop in the level of talent sitting across from him (Carton > Bartholomew), Rossi has done better than could be expected.

And on that same topic, I'm nominating someone for
WORST PROGRAM DIRECTOR: ERIC JOHNSON

Hiring an unfunny and out-of-touch geek like Casey to replace Carton just because he sat in that seat 5 years prior was a LAME, "easy-way-out" decision. Way to go and try to find and develop new talent. ::)

In response to this statement: WRAT usually only has about 20 Currents at one time, and among their Currents are ancient songs, including songs that really have no place on a so-called Rock station (i.e. Daughtry's "It's Not Over", Santana/Chad Kroeger's "Into The Night"). WRAT's sister station, WMMR in Philly, is actually much heavier, even though that isn't saying much. I heard them play Pantera's "Walk" not too long ago, a song that you'll never hear on The Rat. If Korn is too heavy to play most of their original songs (hence the reason for the crap remixes of "Make Me Bad", "Coming Undone" and others that they played), forget about Pantera.

I sampled WRAT tonight, and I heard them playing Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker", a song that was basically an "Unchained Melody" rewrite, Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell", and Billy Squier over a short period. Billy friggin' Squier. This station needs to come out of the stone age and quit being afraid of the harder rock acts out there. Instead of playing all of this old time rock and championing corporate rock hacks like Nickelback, Daughtry, Hinder and 3 Doors Down, they should play more heavier acts and bands that we can't hear on every other station in the market.

WJSE in South Jersey is how a rock station is supposed to sound. No lame soccer mom pop/rock drivel, no light dinosaur wuss rock, just lots of real rock music. It would be doing much better if their owners put more effort into promoting it and if the station had a better signal. WRAT needs to get with the times and give up on this timid, conservative approach to programming. You're a rock station, not some Lite-FM knockoff or Christian pop station. Time to start sounding like one.

Joe, in fairness to EJ, the permanent hiring of Casey - someone who was out of work and therefore, work for cheap - smacks of something else. I won't confirm nor deny, just a thought I had.

I actually turned on 101.5 for the first time in ages today and heard they were doing a live remote. I heard Dennis with Rossi and stopped to listen, as I figured that would be the best afternoon pairing, but then I heard Casey butting in and talking over Dennis.

Awful.

I like Rossi. I like Dennis. Why they chose Casey, I will never figure out.

Best Station -- WSJO, solid presentation, very community-oriented, very LOCAL
Best Specialty Show -- WIBG's Wibbage Music
Best Promotions Staff -- I see WMGM out on the streets more than any other station so they get my vote
Best Summer Event -- I know WMMR is a Philly station, but their MMRBQ was here in Jersey
Most Memorable Contest -- WAYV's Wing Fling
Best Music Selection -- WZXL, very broad play list over several decades
Most Improved -- WCZT

Best Station -- G-ROCK - At least it sounds like someone is having some fun.
Best Specialty Show -- None that I pat much attention to.
Best Promotions Staff -- Is there a best ?
Most Memorable Contest -- ESPN 1450 - 99 Bottles to give-a-way Eagles - Dallas tickets.
Best Music Selection -- WZXL or SOJO...Depends on the mood
Most Improved -- SOJO - I thought at this time last year they stunk...but they are getting much more enjoyable to listen to.

I am a huge fan of Craig Carton and Ray Rossi. I am also a fan of Casey. From professional experience I can tell you Eric Johnson is a hard-working, and very fair PD (hard to come by these days) JoeFromTomsRiver, you have always had a bone to pick with 101.5. Judging from previous posts including on Mary Walter's website...you can do a better job programming and doing a show on 101.5. Good luck...the only people who post negative things on these boards are people who aren't talented enough to be in the biz in the first place. Get a hobby my friend.

Although I agree with your sentiments on EJ, I think your comment that the only people who post negative things here are those who can't make it in the biz is a little off-base.

I disagree; In fact, I'd say that a lot of the negative things (without SUBSTANCE) are posted by people in the biz who are burned out and chewed up.

Joe's comments about EJ, from a person who's not inside 101.5, could be VERY reflective about people who are listening to the "new" Jersey guys show. A lot of people do not like Casey, and the fact of the matter is, it's not a situation where it's a person you love to hate like Craig was, it's that people do not like Casey and do not want to listen.

Casey was hired. No tryouts were made. No re-shuffling of the talent was attempted. From an average listener's perspective, EJ is the person to "blame" for that.

This is not the Radio Insiders Club. This is a board for people to discuss radio, both from people inside and outside the business. You can't hang with negative comments, substance or not, then don't read.

BTW, I post negative things. I put close to 10 years of my life into the radio business. When I left radio, I left two different offers on the table. I still do things here and there for shows and personalities that I'm friendly with. But I'm a lot more content, both mentally and financially, now then I was when I was working in the business.

#1, I've never had a "bone to pick with 101.5". Didn't I just give kudos to Rossi in my last post?? And as far as the message board run by the woman you mentioned, I spent half the time DEFENDING Carton and Rossi on there, not bashing the station.

#2, As for not being "in the biz in first place" and not being "talented enough". I guess we'll never know, because I never have and never will pursue it. I don't feel the need to take a pay cut and put myself in the position to have to uproot my whole life if things don't work out at a particular station. Maybe Casey has no problem living like a nomad, traveling around the country just hoping to get work, meanwhile his family is halfway across the country. It's pathetic.

#3, Prior to this post, JugDish, you hadn't posted under that screename for almost 2 years. Seems a bit shady.

#4, Take a bow, you have somehow managed to accomplish having Starscream coming on here and validating my opinion on something.

Ding ding ding. Winner. Exactly the reason I got out. I was lucky enough to work at four different jobs in the biz that were close to my home base. If I wanted to work elsewhere, I would have had to leave the area. As much as I love the business, I love my wife and my family more. It was a very hard decision - and I still have irons in the fire if I ever want to jump back in - but I'm satisfied with the choices I made. The nomadic lifestyle of jumping market to market was the most unappealing aspect of the radio business to me. When I started, I knew I only wanted to work in 5 specific markets, that's it.

I think the most valuable lesson radio has taught me is how to manage my money. Before, I'd scrimp and save to go on vacation. Now? I roll like Ric Flair.

Whooooo.

How is it my fun poll about the best and brightest in NJ radio (could be South Jersey, Central Jersey or North Jersey) has devolved into a NJ101.5 Casey hating thread? Sheesh! C'mon people, 2007 is almost over. You had to like SOMETHING.
