2008: BEST, WORST, & MOST UNUSUAL

BEST
Hiring Tim Leary & The Morning Showgram on WCTK. The show rocks pure & simple.
WORST
Brian Mulhern not on the air anywhere. If this isn't a case of the more you have to offer, the less chance you have of getting hired I don't know what is. Get him somewhere on HJY. The station seems to have a budget.
Mike Sheridan no longer doing traffic is a close runner-up, but he left voluntarily.
MOST UNUSUAL
Kristen DePetro explaining she submitted 6 diaries favoring her husband because she thought Arbitron was like voting on American Idol. Ask Taylor Hicks how that turned out.

I only have a Unusual. That whole thing with Kerri Rodrigeus. She quit and or was fired at WSAR, then she worked 1 day for the Fallriver D.A. and quit that. The Owners of WSAR actually stated in a newpaper Pro Jo story, that Miss Rodigeus was Mentally Ill.

BEST: Citadel finally blowing up "The Score". Citadel putting The True Oldies Channel on 790, a station I can sometimes pick up all the way out here in Central Connecticut on the car radio.

Worst: Citadel for putting IMUS on The True Oldies Channel. (Yeah I know they own the show, but still if you must carry IMUS put it on a talk station). Also worst stations: 990 The WALE and 1320 Universal 7 Radio.

Most Unusual: CC putting the Christmas format on B-101 after doing it on 93.3 The Coast.

Best: Skynet left the boards
Worst: The awful Big Boy Neighborhood morning show on Hot 106. I know morning drive is a struggle for them but they didn't even try
Most unusual: The whole ratings scandal at WPRO. More unusual in that other than the bad press nothing really happened (yet) on The Trail

Couldn't agree more!!. In the case of 1320 WARL, you might also have to hand out the award for worst/most unusual programming as well.

Who else would have the shamelessness to actually air either taped or downloaded copies of another broadcast outlet's programming? I refer specifically to hearing (on several occasions)...what I assume are bootleg copies of NPR's "Car Talk" program on WARL's air.

Utterly shameless...... Chalk up another one for the Peter Arpin & Firends duopoly of 1320/990.

Best, giving Matt Allen his night talk show.

Worst, Whjj not increasing it's local talk inprint.

Most unusual, I agree would be Keri Rodriguez and what she did to Wsar. She was P.D. at Wsar and afternoon drive host. Using the stations Air time, she pushed the election of a Somerset District Attorney. He in return offered her a big paying job. She then 'walked out' of Wsar, leaving them with no P.D. and no Afternoon drive host. Then , as Keri has had a long history of ' made up a bunch of stories' about working conditions at Wsar. Every single employee said she was lying. As for the District Attorneys job, she lasted not even a whole day. If Wsar wasn't such a weak station, this story would've been the most insane, by far.

p.s. Skynet broke a good story from time to time. I can think of a couple of posters who , well, I think you get my drift.

Best: The musical direction of WBRU. They seem to have steered away from most of the nu-metal and cookie-cutter rock crap and have a musically great sounding alternative station. Also, WSNE shifting back to hot AC is a great idea. WCTK also still sounds good, and despite the controversy, WPRO-AM sounds good as a full service N/T as well.

Worst: Cheap Channel and how it runs its stations (voicetracking and such). Heck, even HJY was broadcasting dead air for most of Christmas. Also, the fact that there are still 2 strong FMs that are broadcasting sports and talk.

Unusual: The whole DePetro/ratings scandal. And it was the one time in a while that the numbers weren't embargoed and suckers like me could actually see the 12+ numbers.

Jacko

Best: Well at least no high profile firings for the holidays this year. Maybe I could add Providence did get an oldies station that goes back to the early 60's on WPRV even though it's on AM
Worst: Agree with Jacko about CC continuing to run two of their stations with a skeletal staff
Most Unusual: The WPRO diary debacle

If what you are saying is true I think you ought to get this on tape and send it to both Rhode Island Public Radio and WBUR. The former being the local NPR station. The latter being the station that produces/distributes Car Talk.

Oh!...It's true alright. My guess is that "Car Talk" gets used as filler programming when they don't have any of thier paid programming scheduled, or when there isn't any programming handy from whatever satellite network/s they might belong to.

As for turning them in......That would actually require more footwork and energy than I'm willing to expend on the Peter Arpin Empire...such as it is. Truth be told, I'm lazy, and I'm hoping that by bringing it to light on the board, perhaps this news will find its way into the right hands, and that justice will be done anyway.

LOL. Yeah I'm too lazy to drive to Providence to do it myself. Actually I don't want to go to Providence period. It's a pain in the neck to drive to Providence from central Connecticut because there is no direct route. (Stupid enviormentalists messed that one up). It should be noted that back when 1320 was co-owned with 990 in Southington Connecticut, 990's GM was involved with operations of 1320 and I recall he told me that every time he had to go to Providence he'd never go the same way twice.

Best ----- Jim Corwin getting Fired!!

Worst--- Barbara Haynes Not getting fired!!

Unusual--- Deb Ruggiero , ultra lefty at Wpro being elected to State Senate!!

Boooooooooooooooooooooo

Best-Tie Corwin getting fired (maybe we'll get some warm bodies over in that building on B, HJJ and somebody to sit w/ Tad in the morning on Coast) and Ruggiero being elected (she won't be on the air anymore)

Worst-the continued decline of actual people on air over on Oxford

Unusual-The diary fiasco. (Rhetorical question...why has every book since summer 2006 prior to and every book and trend after this happened been withheld by Arbitron...HMMMMMMM)

Big Boy on Hot 106 . Not sure if this is Good or Bad for Hot 106.

Please show me where I said Keri was lying. I do not recall making such a statement.

Don't worry about it now. A friend of mine who reads these boards sent me an email and told me he contacted WRNI about this and got a response back from them and was told that WRNI would be monitoring WARL/1320.

Thanks Marc!

Much appreciate passing along the info to the right folks regarding the latest 'sleaze eruption' over at 1320.

I was hoping that this market had seen the last of these kinds of shenanigans when Francis Battaglia finally slithered his way out of town.

Given that there's so little diversity of ownership in this market (2 giant clusters, and a bunch of also-rans)......It kinda bothers me that two of this market's signals (1320/990) are controlled by an ownershiop group that reminds me waaaaaaay too much of Francis Battaglia.

Thanks again Marc.
