2008 Jax radio

2008 is going to be yet another tough year for owners with stations in the Jax market. I expect additional positioning in the coming year. Let's start with 92.7. There are a few (only a few) on the board who are hoping for some type of oldies format. I don't think that will happen. CC is in a position to shake things up even more with a mainstream pop based Hot AC, Triple A, or maybe a Spanish FM. Renda will blow up Movin' and I am quite sure that will become a BOB type format in the next 6 to 8 months. Renda will also sell 94.1. Cox will bring the very solid Dove format to Jax on 102.9 in the coming year. The question is who is going to be the morning talent...how bout Mr. Crofton since he will be out at WEJZ. Then again I am sure I have no idea what is going to happen and I am just killing a few minutes to entertain those on this board who actually get worked up about this stuff. Let the mental gymnastics continue.....

A very nice way to stir things up around here...now of course I think Renda is going to come around and blow up Movin eventually...I just don't see it ever gaining ground. As for 94.1 why would Renda try to sell that when they just put a whole ton of money into building a new studio and adding RDS to the station..Renda has been doing better with Sunny in two years then the company before them had when they were Hot AC. We know the signal is a St. Augustine signal so you really can't expect them to compete too much with the blow torches in Jax. As for a Dove format....is that close enough to oldies? I will say Cox has some major changes to make this year or otherwise they need to sell the stations and get the heck out of Jax....what was once use to be successful stations are now being overridden by Clear Channel and yes Renda on two stations....its sad to think that Gator is beating some stations that have been around longer then them including Rock....what sadness to see Rock in the tank right now. If CBS Radio owned the Cox stations I think that competition would be tighter and more fun to watch in Jacksonville.

I think in Jax it's a simple case of lead, follow, or get out of the way. CC is juggling signals, formats, and city's beacuse of the Big Sell-Off. There it's a simple case of steppin' & fetchin' to keep the Feds at bay, a familiar situation with them around the country. It's a distraction that keeps them from tending to other stations that are slipping in numbers, although QIK did trend up a bit the last time around after a steady and notable slide over the past few books.
At Cox, the only stars are WOKV (which always does well in presidential election years), and WJGL (which has all the endearing warmth and intimacy of a leaf rake). The demise of three one-time Jacksonville radio powerhouses at APE, Rock, & Point is tragic but not unusual for the company. They bought a bunch of overvalued radio stations (despite being revenue monsters) and managed to run them into the ground within just a few years. The exodus of talent from that building stayed constant with the dumping of Mark, Genny, & Dahmer as well as Patty Haze at Rock right before Christmas (a fine holiday tradition from the Ebeneezer Scrooge School of Business Ethics). I don't see Cox flipping Point to the Dove ... why feed off the strong upper demo numbers at WOKV The Cash Cow?
Why on earth you believe Arthur Crofton would leave Lite is beyond me. He's been there, what ... 17 or 18 years? Ratings are good and the music has been freshened up. Sunny's a niche station that's doing better than it had before Renda bought it, so if it ain't broke, why fix it?
And why is it sad to think Gator is beating Rock, APE, & Point? I take you back to the first sentence of this post ... lead, follow, or get out of the way.

hey I didn't say Arthur Crofton should leave WEJZ...I would think that would be foolish to let him out the door....he is an icon to Jacksonville radio as like to his fellow co-workers a couple studios down at Gator who run the Hometown Morning Show. Renda has been doing well Sunny and should stick to it...Movin is another story for another day.....Cox is just a sad story to be point blank except for what was said about WOKV and WJGL. Where has the talent that Cox has thrown away...either at Clear Channel or Renda and it seems Renda over the past year has picked up some very good talent like Steve, Eden and Amadeus from WAPE, Craiger Williams from WQIK, Matt aka Shotgun from WROO, and even to hear Tom Murphy back on doing Traffic for the Renda Stations is quite nice in the afternoons. Time will only tell where radio is headed around here

Aside from the Moving format, Renda has done very well in Jacksonville! It shows that a smaller independent company can still compete with the large private boys. Its been debated here I'm sure, that Renda should have stayed in the oldies format longer than it did. One things for sure, Arthur Crofton is not going anywhere.

Well Renda should have stuck with it...the audience was starting to grow when they flipped it....only a flip back to Oldies will work for them....if they can do that...promote it right...get top quality DJs and have a great on air presentation they could have three stations that could be in the top 10 easily...but I know we are talking a long shot about that happening again.

MSHBroncos2005, I enjoy reading your threads. Just curious, have you worked in radio very long? If so, were you a GM/PD or just in sales? I'm a 20 year radio guy, with market experience form Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville. All on air, and minor mgmt. positions.

I'm liking this discussion I'm just to the south of you guys in orlando and i hope you guys keep us abrest of what happens. i'be been listening to rock and other stations from theer online and i agree with everything that was said here. I think movin may be movin out the door. I hope you guys get oldies back on that station. and no, i don't mean scot shannon and true oldies, i mean a local originated format..
but i give props to renda. they are doing well for themselves. and no pun intended but kox is sucking ****... and i heard something about bubba the lovesponge coming to rock witch may be it's savior.
