2009 FORECAST FOR NEW ORLEANS RADIO

Hearing many different rumors about cutbacks and whatnot it is making me wonder whats going to happen in the New Year. With the Fairness Doctrine probably going to be implemented as soon as Obama takes office i suspect talk radio is toast but guys help me out is there anything on the horizon in regards to radio in 2009.

Rational heads will prevail. The “Fairness Doctrine” will not return. When there were only three or four stations in most towns, the doctrine made sense. Unlike newspapers, a radio or tv station could not use “public airwaves” to take unfair stances on issues without giving all parties an equal voice. Thus, few stations dared to even do editorials, much less issue endorsements on issues or for candidates. But, now with so many radio and tv stations in most markets and with cable, etc., the doctrine makes no sense; and even the most liberal socialist will not be able to kill the talk radio industry, which is what it is. Too many millions of dollars are being generated for our topsy turvy economy by talk radio. However, if it should ever happen, the solution is simple: program two stations with every other program being conservative and liberal. Program conservative opposite Liberal and vice versa, with plenty of promos directing the listeners from station to station each time the slant changes, so Liberals and Conservatives can listen to uninterrupted programming of their choice by simply switching stations every three hours or so.
I predict ‘09 will be a good and bad year for radio. Good broadcasters will invent new ways to stay afloat and prosper. Bad broadcasters will go under, and most of those stations will be bought or taken over by good broadcasters, so that in a few years, radio will be much improved....back closer to they way it “usta be”.

Too many millions of dollars are being generated for our topsy turvy economy by talk radio.

If this is so, whay are so many radio stocks penny stocks? Seems like talk radio syndication has grown mainly by being cheaper (than local), not by being a better revenue generator...

According to trend guru Gerald Celente, this year's Christmas retail season in the USA may be the last, that soon the typical person will be concerned only with putting food on the table. He expects the commercial real estate sector to collapse, then the credit card bubble will pop. He expects food riots, a tax revolt and a new third political party to appear by 2012. If any of this comes close to being accurate, then expect a huge plunge in radio ad revenue at the very least. But he does have good news. People at the local level who are smart and have high moral character will do very well as the corporate retail chains evaporate into thin air. Perhaps this also applies to radio folks at the local level?

I started this topic a few weeks ago looking for definitve answers but i guess i didnt ask the question right. So here goes, are there any impending format changes on either FM or AM that id venture to say would kick in at the New Year? Just asking only because it seems things are stagnant.

Yes
92.3 changes in January
104.1 changes mid year
106.1 changes by the fall
107.3 changes by next Christmas

;D

Dick Lewis exits Clear Channel and has to turn in his Hummer, who he has nicknamed "Lips with big wheels." He crashes the parking lot exit gate upon leaving the New Orleans world domination center because it fails to open and he wants out before the San Antonio reich management changes their minds. The Rock of New Orleans becomes the home of All Gerry V talk radio and rises to the new leader in the ratings of retired transplanted Jewish women aged 57-59. New Orleans thrives as Mr. Lewis, the worlds second tallest midget, is elected mayor. Violent crime drops by 102% as a result of everyone else leaving town for Houston, Atlanta and Memphis. All "New Orleans" radio stations located in Vacherie go off the air because of a hostile and hungry water moccasin. WWL remains the "Big One" despite the best efforts of Mr. Lewis who constantly screams at them for stealing his show after Katrina and beats him with people that can't pronounce commen words in understandable English. WOKZ is named station of the year.

What in the hell does a station in Fairfeild Il (WOKZ) has to do with New Orleans radio forcast ???

My guess is he made a mistake on the callsign of WWOZ 90.7

While we make our Christmas list, here is the wish list for 2009 (my actual beleif is the market will be stagnant for much of the year with only 104.1 maybe doing any kind of movement)

92.3 - Remembers that A/C radio has sucked for the last 10 years, the big wigs see so many 10 year old and newer trucks still sporting Louisiana's rock 92.3 stickers that the radio gods smile on us, and let Jason Ginty actually do a rock station like KRDJ (which would actually be in Simucast) with LOCAL talent.. the ratings will go above a 2.1 for first time in 10 years

93.3 - Clear Channel believes that leaner is meaner, and cuts even more people basically making the station automated and syndicated to a hilt... even then station stays top 5

94.3 - Mike gets a clue that people do like his personal choices, only if he plays some of their personal choices too, widening up the playlist and making WTIX the oldies choice for New Orleans

94.9 - The dowdy's realize that their station would be better served by the AM stations already broadcasting the gospel format in town gives country a Kick again with simucast of Kicker 108 from Bay St. Louis

95.7- Same dull liners (after the novelty of a white man doing a New Orleans accent has worn off) and even tighter playlists rule the day

97.1- Stevie G convinces Entercom that instead of paying fees to Kidd Kraddick (even though the ratings are high for the show), him and Tea Pot could do double shifts and become the morning swirl also

98.5- read 93.3 bio

99.5- In a remarkable development, with ratings going up on crosstown station WWL when Bob Mitchell talks about his best buddy killing the love of his life, he is hired by CC for mid mornings.. a few staff cuts here other than that too

100.3- No change there on the bayou there Cher , just same ratings

101.1- More staff cuts, more voice tracking , more of a "Why don't someone else play country in NOLA for"

101.9- same station different decade... oops sorry that's my report on 101.9 for 2010 :p

102.9- Competes with WQUE, still gets blown out by VT from NYC on Q93

104.1- To eliminate costs, VT is out on 104.1 with same music playlist of 1990s alternative (with a this decade song thrown in to be able to say new rock) that they ripped from a 1999 list of hit songs for the decade from the Tampa station they were getting their VT from...

105.3- With Mitchell gone to WRNO, we see a renewed stagnation in place that serves WWL top 5 station status for another year

106.1- When Mike finally gets it, 106.1 flipped to AAA voiced tracked from elsewhere

106.7- Shining star of Citadel NOLA and nothing really happens here.. except worried faces everytime a hurricane comes in the Gulf that after a storm, they may not be back

107.5- Even though a Houma station, it has a CP to move to the 106.7 site... The station realizes it has a better chance of money making as a number 1 station in the number 5 metro area of Louisiana than be 15th in the NOLA market and stays put in Houma.

Mitchell and RNO would deserve each other. They let a seasoned and proven talk show host like Andre go, and then they hire a one trick pony who has no depth as a talk show host, offers suck kindergarten topics, a phony laugh, no brains and has an excuse for everything that involves his laziness and shiftiness.

Don Banks would be the first one to greet him. With a baseball bat.

I could see it now...bumping Rush for Michell. But in reality...we can expect to hear another four hours of Michell when his "best friend" is sentenced. They will rehash their exclusive, "The Witnesses Speak Again". An inept view of what of what really didn't happen hosted by the village idiot with co-host, lil' Timmy Tumber, who couldn't stomach either one of them.

What is Don Banks doing on RNO? Folks I asked down here said he was replaced by Cousin Vinny and it was Michell's doings. What a worm. If that's the case, make sure it's an aluminum one. They don't crack.

690 - A change in format? Not likely but it could simulcast WTIX if George buck wanted to. He owns 60% of WTIX-FM
http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws...ext=25&appn=101228925&formid=323&fac_num=8382

730 - Present ownership gives up and forfit the licence

94.9 - I agree with RFLA on this one but Classic Counrty would be better

102.9 - Later in the year citadel tweaks the format or changes it for poor signal maybe goes spanish

104.1 - An ideal scenario would be Guaranty buys from CC, moves format from 104.5/104.9 here puts classic country on 104.5/104.9

104.5 - KNOU returns to the air at full power as oldies broadcasting from a concrete studio 30ft above ground

104.7 - Goes back to jazz because it's sister station on 96.5 had went back oldies earlier this year

106.1 - Flips back to soft A/C

107.5 - Cancels CP and stays put

Off topic did anybody know or heard a spanish outlet on 91.9 from Gonzales/Donaldsonville. I caugh it in Kenner, but can not find any info on it in FCC database. Is it Legit or Pirate? ???

How 'bout this, 106.1 stays cheap by throwing a few bucks to the east and starts simulcasting Mobile's WZEW (at least it'll be a regional version of AAA instead of something programed out of New York). After a a little press and 2 or 3 billboards are hung, they start trying to sell local commercials on 106.1 to see if AAA can pay the bills or even better, make them a profit. It's the closest to the revival of "The Zephyr" anyone could hope for.

107.5 could ask Dowdy to pay them $500 to cancel their CP so he can finally file to move WZKX 107.9 into the New Orleans market as a full market 100kw. Realizing that his time has run out and this is his last chance to do it, he bites. No format change for 107.9 after the move in.

What is Don Banks doing on RNO?

I'm doing production, thanks for asking.

I'll make the easiest prediction of all:
no matter what happens, posters here will still find something wrong and complain all the time by wishing it was like (favorite station that no longer exists goes here), with the only change being smashed will no longer recommend satellite radio because they got rid of his favorite country channel.

See ya in 2009! ;D

What will happen to that little Rap station down in the bayou that went bankrupt (and I believe is off the air)? Did Jimmy Swaggart buy it?

Or at least find a way to generate a stronger signal! My attempts of late to hone in on 94.3's transmission (thanks greatly to subspace interference from WQUE and WKBU) have proved next to impossible. :p

New transmitter has been installed at Piont a la hache site was running at full power last week. Might have gone back to backup so KNOU can work on their transmitter and tower.

Merry Christmas :) ;) :D ;D 8)
