2010 New Year's Wish List

1. That everyone remains healthy and happy.
2. No additional layoffs this year. (Okay I'm dreaming but this is a wish list).
3. More of an emphasis on local radio news.( My personal wish list).
4. Those out of work in 2009 find jobs this new year.
5. Continued success to Scott Fybush and his excellent web site www.fybush.com

Please feel free to add your own "wish list" items.

Happy New Year to all of you!

A big +1 for your Item #5, Mark.

I would modify the "local news" to more of an emphasis on "news," period. For example, the "team coverage" of Tiger Woods' escapades off the golf course has crowded out many more important stories that are far less "sensational." Sadly, I'm not excluding NPR from this whereas I would have been able to previously.

I think NPR's coverage was quite reserved. The bottom line is that what happened to Tiger is NEWS! You might not like it. But it's news. It would be irresponsible of a major news network to ignore he story. Now, you did not hear reports when another of Tiger's "girlfriends" came forward with her allegations of an affair. But when the top golfer in the world self-destructs, it's something that needs to be covered. And this story did not crowd out other more important stories. All of NPR's signature news magazines began with coverage of the top stories of the day -- health care, Afghanistan, the economy. With all the inventory NPR has, spending three minutes in a two hour show reporting on Tiger is not really an issue. I will admit that you're not alone in your opinion. NPR hosts have read a number of letters from listeners who objected to the Tiger coverage. But that doesn't make them right. NPR's editors don't make coverage decisions lightly. They debate the pros and cons. Believe me, I've received emails from NPR editors about the thinking that goes into such decisions. And in this case, the decision-making and reporting on Tiger Woods met the NPR standard.

Sorry Phil, we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

I think the appropriate amount of coverage of the Tiger Woods affair would not be statistically significant from zero.

I also believe that we heard a lot more than two minutes out of the hour devoted to this story, including "expert interviews" and the like.

Furthermore,

NPR hosts have read a number of letters from listeners who objected to the Tiger coverage. But that doesn't make them right.

is just the kind of "we know what's good for you" attitude that turns me off. Opinions are never wrong. You may decide not to respect them or declare them misinformed--at your own peril, of course.

Every millisecond devoted to Tiger is a millisecond taken away from serious investigation of other more important topics. But it's so very hard to break away from the altar of celebrity, especially when the "news" just falls like raindrops from the infotainment heavens.

I am praying and hoping for more local content. God has Radio turned into something that is in many ways un-listenable.

It wasn't God. It was Mammon.
Mammon in the Morning? Early 80's, no? Started in Elmira? Mark Mammon? Then he got a gig in Cleveland and was huge before he just, pfffft... disappeared. Word is he opened a bar. Or was it a funeral home? Maybe he went into real estate. Mammon... dude had it workin' for a while, then it just all blew up.
