2011 BANNER YEAR FOR SUB-CHANNELS (HOW DID YOUR CITY FARE?)

Wow, Atlanta hit the sub-channel jackpot this year!

first we got "some" of My Family TV on 57.2 WATC in early Summer
then we got Me-TV on 2.2 WSB in late Summer
then Bounce TV on 36.2 WATL in September
Antenna TV started on 12/24 on 36.3 WATL
NOW, RTV has moved (from light bulb station 16.3) to powerful low power WTBS 26.5

(a few other minor Spanish and News subs debut also)
Which new major subs appeared in your area this year?
 
In Phoenix:
[*]KAZT-TV launched MeTV on channel 7.3 in June, then in September, switched MeTV to 7.2 and moved RTV to 7.3,
[*]KNXV-TV replaced a traffic and weather loop with Live Well Network on channel 15.2 in September,
[*]KTVP-LD added Mexicanal on channel 22.2 in March and SonLife Broadcasting Network on channel 22.3 in October,
[*]KTAZ-TV dropped Inmigrante TV from channel 39.2 in October, but rolled out Canal S.O.I. on channel 39.3 in November,
[*]KDPH-LD added JTV to its DT2 feed in June. JTV identifies as channel 58.1, which was JTV's old analog channel,
[*]KPPX added 10 subchannels on a temporary basis in November as part of an experimental Air Box service.

In Tucson:
[*]KUAT-TV dropped Create from channel 6.3 in November and replaced it with a service called Ready TV,
[*]KOLD-TV added MeTV on channel 13.2, moving the news loop to channel 13.3 and finally dropping the slide apologizing for The Tube no longer being on that channel,
[*]KHRR added Canal S.O.I. on channel 40.3 in November.
 
In Rochester NY, we got Bounce (WROC 8.2) and MeTV (WHEC 10.2) in the fall. And right now I'm visiting the in-laws in Fort Wayne, where Antenna launched just this morning on WANE 15.2, which had previously been The Cool TV. (If you want to be pedantic about it, Fort Wayne also got Fox, of all things, on a subchannel this year, when it moved from WFFT 55.1, now independent, to WISE 33.2, previously MyNetworkTV.)
 
In Memphis WREG added Antenna TV, WMC added Bounce, WPTY added Cool TV, and WLMT changed from RTV to ME-TV.

In Jackson, TN WJKT added Cool TV. On Jan. 1 WBBJ is adding CBS and ME-TV. Unfortunately it's looking like ME-TV might only be used as filler for when CBS programming or local news aren't on, which will only be 5 or 6 hours a day.  I hope this won't be the case, but it won't surprise me with the way WBBJ does things.  :mad:

Don't these networks have a minimum requirement? I'd think that ME-TV would require a station to carry more than 5 or 6 hours a day.
 
In Tallahassee Florida: (Not Much Happening)

WTLH-DT-FOX add Me-TV on 49.3
WTWC-DT-NBC add Cool Music TV on 40.2 and TCN-TV (The County Network) on 40.3 earlier this year

No Antenna TV Network for Tallahassee yet.
 
MYKSMOTV fills some it's spots with The Cool TV and Bounce TV was to launch on 1-1-12 but is know TBA but can get on Antenna
Live Well Network only available on TWCKC so far.
Wating for My Family Net,RTN/PBJ and the others.
 
In Chicago, not much was added, but this is what I know:

Tribune Company launched Antenna TV from their flagship station, WGN-TV, & is on WGN-TV 9.2
Bounce added to WWME-LD 23.2 (Didn't even think Weigel Broadcasting would affiliate with anyone, since they're programming This TV & MeTV for a national audience themselves)

SOI TV added to WSNS 44.3

America One replaced a local Korean Christian station, MC-TV on WOCK-CD 13.4, while the MC-TV moved to WPVN-CD 24.6

At least in the immediate Gary, IN area, WHNW-LD finally went digital, whereas before, they were analog, & mapped to 18.1. They're LeSea's World Harvest TV.

Just for Chicago, WCIU launched The U Too on 26.2 (replaced FBT, which they dropped after 46 years, due to foreign programming declining on the channel), which is mainly a time shift channel of programs shown on 26.1, but some programs shown on the channel are exclusive to The U Too, including E Hollywood True Stories & Cash Cab.

Also just for Chicago, while it's been a digital subchannel to WCIU (26.4, but 26.3 before 12/15/2010) for over 2 years now, MeToo on WMEU-LD I believe signed on to digital on its own channel this year on 48.1, & signed off analog.
 
Seattle/Tacoma/Bellingham:

KING/5, which will lose NBC Universal Sports on 5.2 the moment the Space Needle "explodes" (it's a Seattle thing), commits the subchannel to Live Well Network.
KVOS gains TheCoolTV on 12.2, some weeks after the main channel becomes a primary MeTV affiliate.
KBCB gains Liberman's Estrella TV on 24.2.
KBTC loses its Orcas Island translator on UHF 27 when a Canadian station opens a translator on the same channel. Utilizing a backup method, they're able to resume the main service on 28.1, but two other subchannels - TVW (local legislative and public affairs) and MHz Worldview - are lost in the shuffle for now.
KZJO gains Tribune's Antenna TV on 22.3.
 
ACCUWEATHER went to More TV then to METV-KMBC.
Columbia/Jefferson City only changes I thinkwas Universal Sports Network with something else.
Orlando had some changes like Weather Plus to METV.
 
In the entire state of Maine:

Portland's CW WPXT added MeTV and Maine Public Broadcasting (PBS) added PBS World to it's OTA .3 after being available on Time Warner Cable (who are practically everywhere in the state) for a couple years.
 
In the Johnstown/Altoona area we gained MeTV in June when Cox dumped RTV on 6.2

WATM ABC added a HD WWCP FOX feed to 23.2, and THIS TV on 23.3

Hopefully Antenna TV will pick up steam in 2012. ;)
 
In Southern California, we gained Antenna TV and MeTV (great), California Nonstop (a disappointment), and MHz Worldview (by viture of KCET losing its PBS affilliation, it had to replace PBS World with Worldview; PBS World is now on KOCE 50.4). Like the rest of the Telemundo-owned stations, KVEA added Telemundo.2 and Canal SOI. KDOC also added Pegasus TV on 56.4 (a channel for horse equestrian enthausists which I don't think ANYONE watched), which came and went within seven months, and is currently a simulcast of MeTV. The Ulloa family's KVMD/KXLA/KJLA added a glut of more foreign-language subs, or at least changes to its respective subchannel lineups...too many to care to even mention.

Still waiting for KCOP to add Bounce TV to its 13.2, and seeing if this Los Angeles version of CBS Plus ever launches on KCBS 2.2

Pegasus has decided to ditch the subchannel distribution model and go for cable carriage. They dropped their Houston OTA on KUBE 57.4 just a few days ago.

Supposedly the channel will be "customized for each community" so it might consist of some sort of server based local origination, or On-Demand style programming...not really explained on the website http://www.pegasustv.com

Guess we could have custom channels for all kinds of animals.

In Raleigh-Durham, we saw a few new additions and replacements to our sub-channel selections:


ABC O&O WTVD dropped their Accu-Weather feed from 11.3 and is airing LiveWell TV there and on 11.2.

Antenna TV came to WNCN-TV 17.2 (with Universal Sports moving to 17.3, displacing the NBC 17 weather radar formerly there).

Sinclair Broadcasting stations WLFL and WRDC got into the sub channel arena with Country Music on WLFL (22.2) and The Cool TV on WRDC (28.2).

TCT's WRAY-TV added Christian Spanish at 30.4 to their three existing offerings.

Fox affiliate WRAZ-TV dropped RTV on 50.2 in favor of Me-TV.
 
Cleveland/Akron:

WEWS/5 (ABC) added Live Well Network on 5.2
WJW/8 (Fox) added Antenna TV on 8.2 (Jan. 1, so it's been there all year)
WOIO/19 (CBS) added Me-TV on 19.2
WUAB/43 (MyNet) did not yet add Bounce TV on 43.3, which should debut January 2012 (the subchannel is in test mode as we speak)
 
.......was just about to say that Atlanta seemed to have gained more than most. But, it looks like
Cleveland, Raleigh-Durham did well also. Maybe the banner year was not universal.
 
Wow, WTBS has five sub-channels? I'd think they'd all be freezing up at that point.

In Pittsburgh WPXI replaced RTV with Me TV, which seems to be an improvement.
We still have RTV though on WBGN, which still comes in well if you are not too far away
from the center of town. WTAE has ThisTV, and has added a fill-in transmitter on RF 22
to fill in some coverage holes. The others are TheCoolTV and Country Music, and the usual assortment
of PBS fare. Nobody signing up for Antenna TV or Bounce at this point. The CBS O&O's seem
to have something against running side channels.
 
Not much happened in the NYC market. WPIX 11.4 added Antenna TV back on the 1st of the year. Supposedly Bounce TV is coming to WWOR but no word on when that will happen. Supposedly WCBS 2.2 is adding a news subchannel, but again, no word on when that will happen.
That's about it. Pretty quiet considering it's market #1. Subchannel networks seem to have a tough time getting exposure in NYC.
 
Little Rock/PIne Bluff AR

KETS (AETN) PBS World returns part time (evenings) on AETN's -3 subchannel.  No changes for Create (2-2) or the Radio Reading service on 2-4.

KARK (Nexstar) no subs

KATV (Albritton) RTV unchanged on 7-2 although its programing has gone downhill for most part (especially weekends).  AccuWeather on 7-3 replaced by Live Well (aka "the Steven And Chris channel")

KTHV (Gannett) no changes, THV2 on 11-2

KLRT (Newport TV) "FOX 16" gets a subchannel, The Cool TV on 16-2 for the first time.

KMYA-CD (Halmark Mortgage--former "Equity" station) MeTV added as sub on this low power Univision affiliate DTV station, displays as "49-1" (same as FPINO KMYA-TV Camden AR) and is carried via DishNetwork locals in LR

KVTN (Agape Church) no subs or HD

KKAP ("Educational Broadcasting Corporation"--not a Daystar O&O) no subs or HD for this 24/7 FPINO (Full Power In Name Only) Daystar relayer.  4x3 aspect ratio forces Daystar WS programming to be in squeezeovision.

KASN (Newport TV) Sub returns to KASN via The Country Network on 38-2

KARZ (Nexstar) KARZ adds Bounce TV as a sub on 42-2.  

El Dorado AR (I can only get the El Dorado stations here from the Monroe LA/El Dorado market)

KETZ (AETN) see KETS

KTVE (Nexstar) Aspect ratio problem fixed on KARD (FOX) relay on 10-2 (now a center cut 4x3 SD feed), reportedly both stations are "switched" from Nexstar hub in Little Rock AR.  Previously, the KARD 10-2 relay from KTVE was in stretchovision and unwatchable.
