2011 MARCONI NOMS - Triv and Colby Colb Tyner

How is one host LARGE MARKET PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR and the other is MEDIUM MARKET PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR when both stations are in Cleveland?

I noticed that Stan Piatt, Howie Chizek, or WNIR have not been nominated in any of the categories.

Do the hosts and/or stations pay to be nominated?

You weren't the only one that noticed that.

Somehow, it's fitting that Clear Channel has the Large Market nomination, and Radio One has the Medium Market nod.

a "donation" of a few grand by the station/company is usually the norm. Heard this straight from a GM I worked with.

Well, I'll be sure to ignore these awards. A small entry fee is fine, but thousands? I'd like to see if the winners usually come from the stations that "donated" the most. That whole thing of "Large Market"/"Medium Market" Personality of the year reeks of pay-off. Gotta find some way for both to be nominated to a top spot. Hey, let's do this and in underestimating those who care, hope nobody notices.

WMJI has won five Marconi's since 1998, including Oldies Station of the Year and Large Market Station of the Year honors. Not sure about L&M or other personalities. I can't keep track of everything like Nathan ;) Also in '98 WMJI won R&R Large Market Station of the Year. The only such award for the station for which the staff rec'd varsity jackets (paid for by Nationwide) with "1998 R&R Award Winner" stitched on the front and large logo of that time on the back, leather sleeves, etc. Very nice. I still have mine...in a closet somewhere. If there's any credibility to the aforementioned I give it to the R&R award as I don't believe there are "donations" involved.

Not sure about successive years but the '98 Marconi year we had top of the hour ID's produced stating the win. Whether the awards translated to increased sales or ratings... who knows. If nothing else gave bragging rights and sounds big on the air.

Basically it's bragging rights. If you're good enough to get a Marconi, you probably already have good ratings, and if ratings are good sales generally follows.

This is the first I am hearing about "buying" a Marconi. Do you have proof of this? You mean you just slip somebody a couple of bucks and get the award? Sounds like an urban myth. If it were the case, I can think of a dozen other stations that would have had one by now.
