2011 PREDICTIONS

Had to do it!
2010 was a pretty stoic year for LA radio, no big flips or changes
But what will happen in 2011???

I honestly don't think much will happen in the FM scene, maybe a few changes in the AM band.

But what will happen in 2011???

I honestly don't think much will happen in the FM scene, maybe a few changes in the AM band.

KIIS, KOST, KFI, KRTH and AMP will continue to be top-rated stations.

Speculation will continue about KHHT becoming KFI-FM.

If the numbers don't get better, speculation will increase about Jack becoming KNX-FM (again...but this time as the simulcast of the AM).

Even fewer of us will care about KABC.

Saul will flip something.

And on the AM band, the rankings will look about like they did in the old days (KHJ beating KFWB, KRLA and KTNQ). ;)

-KSWD continues to languish....Possible flip mid-year, by Bonneville.....Rebirth of KLSX with Frosty, Leykis, etc??.....Possibly Old School R&B?

-KBIG possibly tweaks a bit....Maybe to more mainstream Hot AC?

-KFI-FM becomes a reality, with KHHT biting the dust

-JACK either goes KNX-FM or possibly picks up the KHHT slack by flipping to Old School R & B.....Much like XHRM/San Diego

-KTWV takes a bigger bite out of KOST in 2011

Don't see much other change.

Only one I'm sure will happen is CC will "cool" Hot 92.3 and put KFI on there.

KFI-FM on KHHT not going to happen!

OK, and what makes you say that? If you think it's not going on KHHT, then what other station? No way they'll flip KIIS or KOST, and no chance of them flipping KBIG. Not to mention, KYSR has been improving recently so I doubt that station will be an option. KHHT makes it the only choice.

If KFI goes to 92.3, I will no longer be able to hear them here. The signal is plenty strong (as long as I keep my radio far enough from my computer) on 640, but I'm too far away from 92.3 to be able to hear it much, if at all, and I have a local on 92.5 that makes it even more difficult.

CC flips 92.3 back to the beat lol

Wouldn't it be fun if CC flipped KHHT back to the old Beat format (or a slightly more rhythmic variation) and went head to head with Power and also tried to kill KAMP? Its not going to happen because they would cannibalize KIIS in the process but it would certainly make for entertaining radio!

Since it's about money, if KFI was to displace one of the FMs it would have to make more money than both KFI currently does and the FM station it would displace. Seems unlikely considering that none of CCs FMs are doing that poorly.

They had an opportunity to put KFI on 104.3 and 98.7 back when they decided to change formats in 2007 but decided to go a different direction. Both of those stations are doing much better now and so is 92.3

I predict John & Ken will hold their annual Ghoul Pool and this year I'm going to try my best to come up with some names for a change. Anybody here have any good candidates? For those of you whose memory is poor or who are just not With It...the Ghoul Pool is a contest wherein listeners are challenged to pick three celebrities that will kick the bucket in the coming year and said listeners will win prizes based on their eventual accuracy and prowess. You get more points for correctly predicting Big Surprises than Sure Things. Like Zsa Zsa won't get you many points this coming year, I suppose--but Michael Phelps or David Beckham would get you a major bonus. Hey, it's their contest--don't blame me.

Agree Saul will flip something.

I have been speaking to an executive who's company use to do country music in Los Angeles and did well who said they have been playing with the idea of taking a lower rated station and flipping it to country, but I have heard that for a while now.

KOST will stay.
I think 93.9 may flip again.
KABC might rearrange again.
Maybe a few more sales and take-overs.

Can'r wait to see what 2011 holds.

Well, since April of 2009, they have had 4 formats, another change (given the numbers) is not out of the question.

93.9 is probably just a doomed frequency to be on.

How much money is the 93.9 frequency making? In other words, how is it billing? I ask because if 93.9 has been home to four different formats in less than two years, something clearly isn't quite right there. What format has not been tried on it that might work out better than anything else that has been tried on that frequency? Does L.A. have any format holes that could be (successfully) filled on 93.9?

If "Exitos" leaves 93.9, my best bet is either Gen X or triple-A (IMO, Gen X would be a great idea if 92.3 really becomes KFI-FM).

93.9 is LMA'ed with a purchase agreement to Grupo Radio Centro in Mexico. It is highly unlikely that they would do anything other than a format in Spanish. Since they paid very large deposits on the LMA, anything else in the near future is probably unlikely.

Look for "Joya" or "Sonido Zeta" way before you hear anything in English from GRC.
