2012 FALL: ORLANDO WFTV 9 REPLACING GENERAL HOSPITAL WITH STEVE HARVEY TALK SHOW

It does seem strange that WFTV's sister ABC affiliates, WSB
and WSOC, are carrying Katie. But it looks increasingly like
"GH" is history come September, at least if you believe WSB's
management, which has said that ABC is giving 3 PM back to
the affiliates and that Katie seemed to be the best lead-in
to its 4 PM newscast.

I suspect, though, that other Hearst stations (WESH is one),
regardless of network affiliation, will be interested in Katie. I have yet to
see a CBS affiliate pick her up, but Hearst has one in Louisville
(WLKY) that could put her on at 3; they're already running "Let's
Make A Deal" at 10 AM. That is, if Belo-owned WHAS (ABC) doesn't
take her; its sister station in Dallas, WFAA, is carrying Katie and WHAS
also has a 4 PM newscast.

It's not WSB's management. It's long been confirmed the 3 pm hour goes to affiliates. That leaves GH having the slim shot of replacing, temporarily, one of the new ABC talk shows, if they don't deliver to expectations.

"The Revolution" is scheduled to begin in January, after "One Life To Live" leaves the air. So apparently, ABC does not have high hopes for that or "The Chew".

Personally, if I ran ABC, I'd keep OLTL on the air, scuttle the talk shows and move General Hospital to 1PM ET, then give 3PM to the stations.

The planned debut of The Revolution has no bearing on hopes for The Chew. This was he plan since they announced it.

If I'm ABC, I don't keep shows with no long-term hopes for sustained profitability on the schedule. I adapt with the changing times, and move forward. And 3 pm is already going back to the stations.

After Katie's departure from the network, who wants to bet CBS wrote a special clause into the affiliation agreement that they could not, under any circumstances, carry her talk show?

It was through WSB's management that I heard that 3 PM was going back to the affiliates; doesn't mean ABC hadn't already made that decision. And while I've heard reports of "The Chew" bringing down the ratings of "OLTL" (as if that matters now) and "GH,"
it's the same situation that CBS has with "The Talk" and "Let's Make A Deal" instead of "ATWT" and "GL" in that neither does as well as the soaps they replaced. But the talk, game, and lifestyle shows are far cheaper to produce than the soaps and are more profitable even with lower ratings. So I'd say "GH" has two chances of replacing either "The Chew" or "The Revolution": slim and none. And I'll bet that if either "The Chew" or "The Revolution" tanks, ABC will simply find another lifestyle or talk show.

Which makes me think: NBC has nothing between "Days Of Our Lives" and "Nightly News." Might that be the way for ABC and CBS to eventually go?

Cue the bizarre conspiracy theories....

For real... ::) ::) ::)

When ABC announced the cancellations of AMC and OLTL earlier this year, they had said they were giving the 3PM hour back to the affiliates in September 2012. This was not new news. Brian Frons knew this alluded to the cancellation of GH, but he mentioned that it was dependent on the survival of the talk shows, and he wasn't opposed to airing the talk shows and/or GH in half-hour increments- so there are a number of scenarios that could pan out and are likely dependent on the success of the combined talk shows come spring. I'm guessing the decision won't be made until around the upfronts in May- as this will have given all three shows (the Chew, the Revolution and GH) time to show a somewhat accurate portrayal of how they fare in the same lineup.

Frankly, ABC might be best suited to keep GH, at a reduced 30 minute run time- just to avoid completely turning off all former soap fans to ABC. A reduced 30 minute GH would still be cheaper to produce, could attract reasonable 18 to 49 female numbers and not totally alienate soap viewers, as they become more and more accustomed to watching reality shows midday versus soaps.
