2012 Favorites

It is that time of the year... countdowns of the year that was.

So what were your song likes and dislikes for 2012? Here are mine:

1. International Love - Pitbull Featuring Chris Brown. Something about this song just makes me happy...
2. Drive By – Train. Never enjoyed a Train song before, until this little ditty came out...
3. Reboot the Machine (Eyes on the Prize) – The Wallflowers. Really got into this song on AAA radio. Wallflowers never sounded better.
4. Starships – Nicki Minaj. The faux-rave sound was pretty interesting.
5. We Found Love - Rihanna Featuring Calvin Harris. While they did over play the heck out of it, I still find myself listening to it a year later.

Worst of 2012:

Locked Out of Heaven - Bruno Mars. The song grates on me like fingers on a chalkboard. I think he is talented but this is pure drivel that we will never hear again after its three month run.

Payphone - Maroon 5. I just don't get it: it is so vanilla and plain. Where is the hook, the lyrics, the personality? A waste of airtime.

Wide Awake - Katy Perry. Usually very talented, this song was unbearable. From the second I heard the first few notes, my fingers couldn't hit the 'next' button on my car radio fast enough.

Jury is out: "Some Nights" - fun. I cannot decide (still) my feelings about this song. It has an undeniably catchy chorus and hook (that reminds of Cecelia by Simon and Garfunkel). However, the lyrics are nonsensical. First it tries to be silly ("But here they go again to jack my style" "This is it, boy. This is war.") Then goes overly sentimental and self-important ("But when I look into my nephew's eyes, Man you wouldn't believe, the most amazing things, that can come from, Some terrible nights.") UGH. Billboard called it a sleeper hit but here in Atlanta they have been playing it consistently since June.

YOURS?

Where to begin.
Least favorites,
Katy Perry - Wide Awake the first few times I heard this song it was ok, but got really old really quick.
Drake F. Lil' Wayne - The Motto again after the hundredth time or so on this it got annoying.
Usher - Scream not a bad song but got old after a while. I feel like I'm missing a few, but can't determine what they are at the moment. Favorites, just about anything else, this was a big year for my CHR listening, some of the past year's hits will stick with me for the rest of my life. If there has been a year that has defined the sound of my life it is this one.

These 5 stand out for me

Ass Back Home - Gym Class Heroes f/Neon Hitch
Turn Me On - Guetta & Nicki Minaj
I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz
Take Care - Drake & Rihanna
Home - Philip Phillips

I had almost forgotten about some of those. I didn't really care for Take Care, the rest of the ones you mentioned were ok.

Favorite CHR songs of the year: (in no particular order)
Fun.- Some Nights and We Are Young
Jason Mraz- I won't give up
Ellie Goulding- Lights
Calvin Harris- Feel So Close
Gotye- Somebody that I Used to Know
Train- 50 Ways to Say Goodbye
Katy Perry- Wide Awake (I'm admittedly one of the few here that actually likes this)
Imagine Dragons- It's Time
Phillip Phillips- Home
Script- Hall of Fame
Grouplove- Tongue Tied
Ed Sheeran- The A Team
Drake- Headlines (I got into this in 2012)
Jay-Z/Kanye- In Paris (see above)

Yes, I'm mostly into Alternative and Modern AC, hence why most of the stuff here reflects that, if there was something in this category that is not on said list, it's safe to assume I would have put it up here.

Fun - Some Nights
Phillip Phillips - Home
Calvin Harris/Ne-Yo - Let's Go
Imagine Dragons - It's Time
Train - Drive By & 50 Ways To Say Goodbye
Katy Perry - Part Of Me & Wide Awake
Nicki Minaj - Turn Me On
Ke$ha - Die Young
Wanted - Glad You Came
Alex Clare - Too Close
Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know
Flo-Rida - Wild Ones (I dislike rap, traditionally, but did enjoy this one)

I can't believe that Locked Out of Heaven just hit #1 on Billboard. Ugh. Horrible song with incessant whining.

That's Bruno Mars for ya. He always sounds hoarse/strained and whiny to me. I think the main reason his songs do so well is that women eat the lyrics up.

You are right about why his songs do so well. I think of his lyrics as sappy and over-the-top. The only song of his I liked was "It Will Rain." The WORST was last year's debacle with Bad Meets Evil "Lighters." The song was a piece o' crap to begin with; then you add his whiny voice and it made it unbearable. That song may go down as the worst of the decade (IMHO).

I forgot least favorites:
Want U Back (the worst, IMO), Love you like a love song, locked out of heaven, where have you been, one more night, don't wake me up, as long as you love me, Dance (Ass)

Least Favorites

Anything Could Happen - Ellie Goulding
Boyfriend - Bieber
Back In Time - Pitbull
Wide Awake - Katy Perry
Settle Down - No Doubt
So Good - BOB
Your Body - Christina Aguilera

In no particular order, these are my favorite songs from 2012 (I'm sure I'm missing some, but this is a pretty complete list for me):

Nicki Minaj - "Turn Me On", "Starships", and "Pound the Alarm"
Usher - "Scream" and "Numb"
Miguel - "Adorn"
Ne-Yo - "Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)"
Ellie Goulding - "Lights" and "Anything Could Happen"
Justin Bieber - "Boyfriend" and "As Long As You Love Me"
Flo Rida - "Good Feeling", "Wild Ones", and "I Cry"
Alex Clare - "Too Close"
Bruno Mars - "It Will Rain" and "Locked Out Of Heaven"
Havana Brown & Pitbull - "We Run The Night"
Pink - "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)"
Carly Rae Jepsen - "Call Me Maybe"
Carly Rae Jepsen & Owl City - "Good Time"
Kelly Clarkson - "Dark Side" and "Catch My Breath"
Calvin Harris - "Feel So Close" and "Let's Go"
Cher Lloyd - "Want U Back"
Rita Ora - "How We Do (Party)"
David Guetta & Sia - "Titanium"
Katy Perry - "Part of Me" and "Wide Awake"
Gotye - "Somebody That I Used To Know"
Chris Brown - "Don't Wake Me Up"
Ke$ha - "Die Young"
Rihanna - "Where Have You Been" and "Diamonds"
Fun. - "Some Nights"
Justin Bieber & Nicki Minaj - "Beauty and a Beat"
Taylor Swift - "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"
The Wanted - "Glad You Came" and "Chasing the Sun"
One Direction - "What Makes You Beautiful"

I love all this music. ;D

I actually liked "Don't Wake Me Up." A lot of people seemed to find it annoying, but I liked it more than anything else from Brown in the past.

Least favorites?
Boyfriend, Beauty & A Beat, As Long As You Love Me, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Locked Out Of Heaven, Want U Back, Boyfriend, Back In Time, Little Things, How We Do (Party), Gangnam Style, One More Night. Those pop in to mind at the moment.

IMO, the best time of 2012 on CHR this year was winter-spring - a lot of the stuff since then has really started getting to where it seems so overplayed, to me. Spring 2011-spring 2012 was one of the best stretches for CHR I've ever heard.

Yeah, and the problem with "Lighters" is that every other word was cut out of the song in the radio version, anyway, so that made it even worse.

Oh, forgot one of my worst from 2012: "Ho Hey." Hated it on Alternative and hate it on CHR, sorry :-\

Take New Friends' list and add Fun's We Are Young, Payphone by Maroon5, subtract both the Rihanna tracks and Flo Rida's Wild Ones, add Carlie Ray Jebson's This Kiss and One Thing by One Direction, subtract Katy Perry's Wide Awake and add Briget Mendler's Ready or Not, and subtract Calvin Harris - Feels So Close and you have my list. Ho Hay is growing on me as well as Anything Could Happen. Lights was a cool song, but got really old pretty quick.

There's one big song that I absolutely love which I forgot to include on my originl list: "Turn Up The Music" by Chris Brown. I heard it last night on a CHR station in the Detroit area and realized that I'd forgotten to include it. Stations don't seem to be playing it much anymore!

And here's a few more ... LOL ... I keep remembering them!

Demi Lovato - "Give Your Heart a Break"
Outasight - "Tonight is the Night"
Maroon 5 - "One More Night"

I'm not a huge fan of Maroon 5 because I get sick of their songs so quickly after they first come out. "Payphone" is an okay song, but for me, it's kinda so-so right now. I didn't like it at first, then liked it a lot, then got sick of it. Now it's just okay. I haven't gotten sick of "One More Night" yet!
