2013 Bay Area Radio Predictions

(1) CBS will turn KITS 105.3 into an all-sports station, nixing their arrangement with Cumulus;

(2) KQED Radio will purchase another non-comm station, this one in the Southbay.

(3) KGO/KSFO's board op duties will be remoted to Los Angeles or Dallas.

(4) KCBS will increase its market share for all-news after KGO's technical debacles get even worse.

(5) Radio Zindagi, the Hindi station buying time on KFRC 1550 or possibly Desi Radio, the operators of KLOK 1170, will appear on an FM channel, either via purchase or LMA.

10. 97.7 KFFG will flip to CHR/Rhythmic, and will be re-branded as Hot 97-7

OK, you really had me laughing with that one. :)

Please realize that Henry's annual predictions are his wish list.

Here are my predictions for the year: Nobody will switch to Country, or try another rhythmic CHR station. Nobody else will kill a separate FM format to start simulcasting one of their AMs. The only candidate for this is KNBR, and as the ratings prove, Cumulus doesn't need to do this yet. Simulcasting the moribund KGO would just be stupid...lipstick on a pig.

KCBS and KQED will continue to dominate the 12+ ratings. Either "Now" or "Wild" will be the number one CHR depending on the month, and because they are splitting that audience, KMEL will continue its solid showing.

The "New 103.7" will change its handle, only because you can't be be "new" for too long without looking lame. Rumors about Don Bleu's retirement will be revived, but he won't retire.

In short - not much will happen in terrestrial Bay Area radio during 2013.

But CBS has just started a sports network, and KNBR/KTCT will only be carrying some of the format. I'd say CBS would want to get clearance on all the programs on their network, AND they've begun putting sports on their FMs in other cities. So, I could see that CBS would take their least-viable FM and turn it into a sportscaster. KITS looks the most vulnerable here, and they could do a lot better in the very same demographics (18 to 35 males) with sports on 105.3 as they do now with modern rock.

Not to split hairs, but that would be a format flip, not a simulcast. You could be right though - it would make sense. If you look at the list of CBS Sports affiliates though, many are AM.

But look at the CBS O&Os that are affiliates: WFAN AM/FM (the former WNBC), WBZ-FM, WJZ-FM, KDKA-FM, WJFK-FM, KRLD-FM, etc. Looks like they're pulling out all the stops for this launch.

A 1.5 for Live this past book. I would say that CBS must be brainstorming new formats for 105.3, as CBS has blown up better performing stations, but several of us have been expecting a flip for years now.

Those O&O's are only carrying "elements" of the network - meaning 1 minute commentaries (for now), sports updates (full/partial likely once an hour starting in January) and clearing national spots (already happening; the WFAN spot load has increased by 3-4 minutes per hour since the network was launched in September).

Some stations (like KNBR/KTCT) will take some long form programming (maybe an overnight show, for example).

I also wonder if CBS wouldn't prefer a bigger signal than 105.3. I have listened only occasionally since Alex Bennett left the station...and maybe Howard Stern once or twice, but I recall that as I drove around the Bay Area, KITS would drop in and out, with lots of static. With the exception of 93.3, it seems to be SF's worst FM signal.

KOIT will have lowest Xmas ratings ever. This leads to Entercom buying KBAY to simulcast. But simulcast shares will be lower than separate ratings. KOIT flips to CHR & Star 101.3 becomes the dominant 25-54 station.
KITS flips to Sports
KGO flips to all Cumulus syndication.
Clear Channel, Cumulus, CBS, Entercom and KQED all cut back on-air staff.

That assumes NextMedia would sell it to them, which I kinda doubt...

In case everybody has forgotten, this was already tried once. About a decade ago, CBS moved the KBAY call letters to 93.3, and simulcast with the South Bay station, which became KBAI. It was not successful.

Similar, but really the reverse of that. CBS tried to take a successful south-bay station with limited San Francisco penetration and expand it to San Francisco. This would be the other way around (although I have my doubts that NextMedia would ever sell also). KOIT has much more recognition in the South Bay today compared to what KBAY had in San Francisco 10 years ago.

It was hilarious, did anyone see the movie, Starsky and Hutch, with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson? There was a scene showing Ben Stiller jogging along the beach with those 70's huge am/fm headphones on. He was listeniong to 93.3 KBAY!

KQED Radio is doing just fine, thank you. Also, they're already automated after 7pm anyway. Sounds really good, too. The first live break on KQED Radio comes at 5:19am.
