2013 Entertainment Industry Obituaries

Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams---the black Paul Williams, not the white one---left the Temptations in 1971. They were replaced by Ricky Owens of the Vibrations (My Girl Sloopy) and Richard Street of the Monitors (Greetings This Is Uncle Sam. Owens quit after a few months and was replaced by Damon Harris. Then in 1975 Harris quit and became lead singer of Impact (Happy Man).

Has anyone ever tried to count the number of singers who have been members of the Temptations since 1961? I came up with 337 but I may have missed one or two.

Blues singer/guitarist Magic Slim, born Morris Holt, died February 21 following surgery for a bleeding ulcer. He was 75. Among his better-known songs are Scufflin', Born Under A Bad Sign and Gravel Road.

Cleotha Staples of the Staple Singers died of Alzheimer's disease February 21 at age 78. The gospel/r&b group also included her sisters Yvonne and Mavis, her brother Pervis, and their father Roebuck "Pop" Staples. Their hits included Respect Yourself, I'll Take You There, Heavy Makes You Happy, If You're Ready Come Go With Me and Let's Do It Again.

Paul Williams sang with the Tempts?....I saw him on Glen Campbell Goodtime hour in 1967 , singing "We've only Just Begun"?

Is this the same as the Carpenters version? Curious, since their song came out in 1970.

Paul Williams..the short blonde guy remember Smoky and the Bandit..the little Burdette ??...THAT Paul Williams..he wrote a lot of hits in the 70's, several the Carpenters recorded...Not the same Paul Williams that sang with the Temptations..

The short Paul Williams is president and on the board of ASCAP now. I saw him on Craig Furgeson's show last week. He was not very entertaining but I guess age will do that to you....unless you are Betty White.

Yes, there are two singers named Paul Williams. The white Paul Williams could not have sung We've Only Just Begun in 1967. He co-wrote the song with Roger Nichols in 1969 as a Crocker National Bank commercial jingle. The tv ad showed a newlywed couple and implied that they were taking out a loan from the bank. How charming! Richard Carpenter saw the ad and made arrangements---no pun intended---for the Carpenters to record the song. Williams and Nichols also wrote the Carpenters' Rainy Days & Mondays.

Two more recent deaths: One Day At A Time co-star Bonnie Franklin died of pancreatic cancer March 1 at age 67 and Western actor and Tales Of Wells Fargo star Dale Robertson died of cancer February 26 at age 89.

I thought the Temptations were white.... I saw them in Pittsburg doing their hit song "Barbara" I had the 45 on Gold Disk..
Maybe the white paul Williams sang with this group..I was wrong he sang "we've only just begun" on Quantum Leap ..that's why he sang it three years before he wrote it..

The Temptations who sang Barbara were a white doo-wop group from New York. Neil Stevens was the lead singer. The other members were Larry Curtis, Artie Marin and Artie Sands. With two guys named Artie, of course the group had to be from New York! Here is the song on good ol' YouTube:

May I add to the Temptations confusion? (I could have said Ball Of Confusion but that would have been just too easy!) Besides the Barbara group and the My Girl group, there was also a Temptations group who released one single on King and two singles on Savoy in 1958, and there was a fourth Temptations group who, as far as I can find, released just one single, Birds 'N' Bees, on Parkway in 1959. The B-side of that one was titled Temptations. More confusion!

Vince In Albuqueque

In a lot of Looney Tunes cartoons, Bugs Bunny would say, "I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Albuquerque." Vince, you should be proud!

Bobby Rogers, one of the original members of the Miracles, died on March 3 at age 73. An amazing bit of trivia---or karma---or whatever you want to call it---is that Bobby Rogers and Smokey Robinson were born on the same date...and in the same hospital!

Jewel Akens, who had a #3 hit in 1965 with The Birds & The Bees, died March 1 of complications from back surgery at age 79. Back surgery? Since when is that fatal?
http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-passings-20130305,0,3498750.story

Sounds unlikely to us laymen, but, thanks to it's proximity to the spine, back surgery can lead to serious, and even fatal complications. The spine is a conduit of very critical nerve functions. I myself just started by-weekly injections in the lower back to relieve inflamation causing weakness and pain in the legs. Should the injections fail, surgery is indicated, although I've made it clear I won't do this.

John Kennedy nearly lost his life in the early '50s after surgery to repair back damage sustained in the PT 109 incident.

I don't know all the circumstances of Jewel Aken's affliction, and frankly, he was 79 years old. But I do know the risks of back surgery, and that this solution is usually a last resort, especially for lower back problems.

Glen's show didn't start running until '69.

Do you still have that time machine? Does it still work? 'Cause I'd really like just one more circa 1968 real Mountain Dew.

Silly me. I always thought that Jewel Akens was a woman! (Well, the current singer named "Jewel" IS a woman!) But I agree that sometimes age is what can make "complications" fatal.

And I have had back problems myself, so I hope that it doesn't ever lead to surgery!

Cause I'd really like just one more circa 1968 real Mountain Dew. If only Mr. Peabody and Sherman could help us.. ;D I'd like a few cases of the original Coors...What they sell now is no where close...Must be owned by a radio group..Buy a winning combination..and change the entire lineup..recipe...whatever..then wonder..why ain't we selling like it used to ??? ???
