A "family spokesman"---and why are these spokesmen never named, huh?--

Because they are, most often, a friend or relative who is not a public figure and does not want to be inundated with calls.

Michael, please post your phone number here so I can discuss this with you. :D

Tim Hensley, who sang and played dobro, guitar and banjo in the touring bands of Patty Loveless and Kenny Chesney, died April 30 at age 50. Hensley released a solo album in 2008.

A "family spokesman"---and why are these spokesmen never named, huh?---announced on May 1 that Deanna Durbin died April 20 at age 91. Born Edna Mae Durbin in Winnipeg, she made one short and 21 feature films and for a while was Hollywood's highest-paid actress. She retired at age 26 and moved to France, where she lived in relative obscurity.

Actually it was her son who announced her death through her fan club. He was named in the article I saw.

Deanna had one of the most perfect voices I have ever heard. Surprisingly, her speaking voice was quite ordinary (you can hear the difference in her first film "Three Smart Girls"). She looked a lot like Shirley Temple at 15 years of age and had that same bubbly character. It was said she did not like performing in front of an audience and that contributed to her very early retirement.

Gee whillikers (for all you fans of outdated expressions), that reminded me of Flav-R Straws, a 1950s-60s product that had swirls of chocolate or strawberry flavoring inside a straw. You'd dip the straw several times in a glass of milk until the flavoring came out, then stir the milk and (supposedly) enjoy the flavored drink. A similar product, Magic Milk Straws, is available today: http://www.oldtimecandy.com/flavor-straws.htm

Sid Selvidge, a Memphis DJ who founded the Peabody Records label and for 17 years produced the "Beale Street Caravan" radio program, died of cancer May 2 at age 69. Selvidge was also a member of the rock band Mudboy & the Neutrons.

Not to change the course of this thread, but I noticed in the earlier pages there was a discussion of musical groups named for someone other than the lead singer. Would Paul Revere & The Raiders and Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods fit that category?

Back to the main topic, I would like to echo something that jfrancispastirchak stated earlier. I don't know how he does it either, but I think it's a great idea how LARadioRewind thought to list these obituaries all in one place. Nice job! Maybe the monitors could create a separate board if it hasn't already been mentioned.

I started this thread in the 1950s-60s forum because I thought that most of this year's deaths would involve singers and actors from those decades. The "Off The Air" forum would have been a better place for it...unless we can prevent all the 1970s-80s-90s entertainers from dying. If we do a "2014 Obituaries" thread, it should be part of "Off The Air." (Any pun about "off the air" and "breathing one's last breath" would be in bad taste.)

Greg Quill died on May 5 at age 66. In the 1970s in his native Australia, he led a band called Country Radio. They released several hit singles and albums and performed with Elton John and other artists. Quill moved to Canada and formed a new band, Southern Cross, and later became entertainment critic for the Toronto Star.

"Wazowski, you didn't turn in your paperwork!" In the town of Monstropolis in Pixar's Monsters Inc. movie, there was a restaurant called Harryhausen's. It was named for Ray Harryhausen, who was a pioneer in stop-motion animation. He built models of dinosaurs and other creatures and filmed them a frame at a time, moving them very slightly each time. The footage was then combined with live action. Harryhausen contributed to Jason & The Argonauts, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms and many other films. Stop-motion animation was later used for Davey & Goliath, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and several other tv specials and series. Harryhausen died May 7 in London at age 92.
