Well, now I think we need definitions. Do you include Hip-Hop with Rap?

No.

Okay, because the survey you linked to lumped them together. How would you define rap, what sets it apart from hip-hop?

I think most people link Hip-Hop and Rap together but I see two different, if closely related, genres. Hip-Hop, IMHO, has more of a musical base than does Rap (although I would not call HH "real" music either - it's more like dance noise). Rap is spoken word to a rhythm but there is no significant musical element. Rap content is most often confrontational, violent, misogynist, vulgar and crude although it doesn't have to be.

And seeing as how I can't remember the last time I heard something like that on the radio (8 or 9 years, maybe), I'll just accept your position. That specific style isn't as prevalent as it once was.

As the fastest thing in the universe is not light but rather my finger hitting the preset if Rap comes on I don't know if they play that crap on the radio or not. My exposure is sitting beside some ******bag with his hat turned sideways and his car radio blaring. I assume they are listening to CD's and not radio but really couldn't tell you.

Judging by the stories I see online rappers haven't altered their appearance much so I assume they are just as worthless as ever.

These people make The Rolling Stones look like bank tellers.

Well, Mick Jagger is a graduate of the London School of Economics..... (true fact)

And then today we learn of the death, at 69, of Dennis Farina (Law & Order among others).

A really likeable guy who died way too early.

Details, Mister landtuna---we want details! Movie/tv director Michael Mann started using a Chicago cop as a consultant on his crime dramas...and eventually the cop replaced Jerry Orbach on Law & Order. The role probably paid a lot better...and was a lot safer. Dennis Farina died July 22 in a Scottsdale hospital after suffering a blod clot on his lung. He was 69.

this is beyond music critique..this is flat out racism. I guess if the hood fits , wear it.

Rap isn't music - by any definition.

And since there are rappers from several races, including my own, how can this be considered racism?

I hate Vanilla Ice, 50 Cent, Pitbull, Casper, Grido, Alibi Montana, Juelz Santana and Big Pun. That takes care of white, black, Cuban, German, Italian, French, Dominican and Puerto Rican. I'm an equal-opportunity rap hater. ;)

another one..let's see how many more hoods come off...whose next..

A lot of rap singers use a number as part of their stage name...and here we have a guy known as "melan8tr." Coincidence? Or is there some deeper connection? And I would say that it's "racism" to accuse rap-haters of wearing hoods a la the Ku Klux Klan. I don't know anyone who likes every kind of music. Some people hate rap, and some people hate opera, and some people hate heavy metal.

And some people hate all three. ;)

The connection is: My previous moniker was hornet61..but, on 2/11/2012 my only child, my daughter Melanie died suddenly at the age of 41..she was such a superstar her friends nick-named her Meln8tor..half woman, half terminator.
My daughter was my life, and I chose to use her moniker..she would have been 43 this past wed. she was 5-10 stunning, outgoing and Daddy's little girl and I miss her something awful...calling someone a "****** bag who wears their hat sideways" and further down "just as Worthlessas ever" is what i was referring to as racist ..not the hating of Rap..when you chose to align yourself with his opinion then i have to think likewise about you. opera !!! I have yet to hear anyone call Pavorati a ******bag..... so there is my explanation.

Mister melan8tr, I can be very sarcastic sometimes. ("Can be? You are!") But you will never again see me use sarcasm against you. We often get carried away with mean-spirited coimments and putdowns and we seldom are aware of the daily problems and tragedies that others have to deal with. You are brave to share your story with all of us schmucks and you have my admiration...along with my sympathies. Please start capitalizing that "M," okay?

And I'd better not ever find out that Pavarotti sang L'Elisir d'Amore while wearing baggy pants and gold chains!

I am very sorry and saddened to hear of your personal tragedy. I came close to losing two of my kids and can almost understand how you must be feeling.

Do you understand the expression "you are what you appear to be" or, said another way "perception is everything and there is no such thing as a second impression"?

If someone wants to be thought of as a street thug they dress for the occasion - hoodie, pants on the ground, gold bling. It doesn't matter whether they are black, white or Latino, they will be perceived as how they are dressed. Add the hat and the radio/CD thumping rap much louder than it needs to be and you have completed the equation.

Every single one of these people knows exactly what message they intend to send when they dress and act that way. Don't want to be thought of as street trash? Don't dress or act like it.

In the 40's Latinos had the zoot-suiters. In the 50's it was the whites with their leather jackets and ducktail haircuts. Now it is the rappers, most of whom are black. None of these groups sent a positive message to their respective races so please don't dump your personal condemnation on me for not appreciating their anthem.

I do not like opera but I have nothing against the performers as they neither vocalize hate nor threaten me. I don't like gospel either but I have nothing against the people who perform it. I have never liked jazz but, once again, have nothing against jazz artists. Rap however is in a totally different situation. Most of what I have heard is racist, misogynist and vulgar. Enough said.

Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast The First Stone.... You all have certainly seen my posting before, and I am just as bad, as the next guy, I get a little (a little, Alot)testy with some of my comments. You didn't know about my situation and when I get out of line with my comments, I expect to be put in my place,so don't hold back...again don't feel bad, you didn't know. I'm not on that much, I just pop in once in a while for therapy...
