2013 Predictions

CW still does sitcoms?

Evidently, the 18-34 female demographic group has no grasp of any kind on what comedy is.

*Truth.

Okay, my turn now...

* After lack of interest, WWE will abandon their plans for the WWE Network; Raw will go back to two hours, Main Event and Saturday Morning Slam cancelled, and Bottom Line and Afterburn return to U.S. syndication
* CBS and Fox will FINALLY launch their own Android/iOS apps
* KYES "My 5" in Anchorage will be sold to Schurz Communications, making them sister station to KTUU (who will also produce a 9 p.m. newscast)
* Starz Media will buy Carsey-Werner; the company after many decades of comedies will produce their first drama series
* The CBS Evening News will become, for the first time in 25 years, the #1 network newscast (outrating NBC and ABC after being in third place for so long)
* CBS This Morning will become #2 in between Good Morning America and the Today Show
* The WatchESPN app will be updated to include GCI (Alaska), CableOne, DirecTV, and Dish Network
* Dish Nation will be cancelled...so will Access Hollywood after 17 years!
* ARCS (the Alaska Rural Communications Service) will cease operations; GCI will take full control of TV service to rural Alaska
* TNA Xplosion will finally be on domestic TV in the U.S., on MTV2

And though not TV related...
After so much pressure, Sarah Michelle Gellar will FINALLY join Twitter (hey, Betty White and the Pope did in 2012)!!!

One more, since it was too late for me to add it in:
* Audrina Patridge and Fox Sports' Erin Andrews will replace Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian as hosts of The X Factor (yeah, that'll get lots of mens' eyeballs away from Survivor!)

Those are bold predictions. However, I see "Extra" being cancelled before "Access Hollywood." NBC Universal will just integrate the show with E! News, but keep it somewhat autonomous.

As for the prediction someone made about Katie Couric: I see her following her boy pal Jeff Zucker to CNN.

Seriously, this is not to make any FUNNY predictions:

- I think Starz will be either sold to Comcast (which was move their Universal Picture contract from HBO) or Starz will merge with Epix (movie channel that is owned by Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM.  If that doesn't happen, then I think Starz will be brought by Time Warner, Rainbow Media or even Univision.  I don't see Starz being brought by CBS because I think it can hurt Showtime and Sony (they are losing a lot of money).

- I think NBC will continue to gain in the prime-time ratings in 2013, but will be up and down with the "Today Show."  This will result into more changes to the "Today Show."

- ABC will be strong with "Good Morning America," but will lost their news personalities to other networks, including CNN.  As for their prime-time, ABC will lost some viewers.

- I think The X-Factor will have their final season on FOX next year.  The show is not doing well and I think it at it's last leg.

- ON THE RADIO SIDE: CBS Sports Radio will grow more faster than expected and will make ESPN Radio a little nervous.

- BACK TO TV/CABLE, BUT ON THE SPORTS SIDE: NBC Sports Network will continue to lock up sports deals, including NASCAR from either ESPN or TNT.  I think CBS Sports Network will get the Big East deal (even thought the Big East is losing teams right now).  Plus, I think ESPN will make a deal with the SEC to create a full 24/7 SEC Network channel.

More predictions to come soon!

A few more prediction:

-I think Tribune will sell their newspaper properties. As well as some of their TV properties in medium to smaller markets like in Portland, Oregon, St. Louis and Sacramento. However, Tribune will keep Chicago's WGN, LA's KTLA and NY's WPIX. Plus, I think WGN America will be renamed and programmed more professionally.

- I think Sinclair Broadcasting will purchase some of the Tribune stations and add more to their growing portfolio. They are in the running to purchase all of Barrington Station group. If they are successful, then expect more deals from Sinclair in 2013.

Here is my predictions for 2013:

CW to announce it is closing up shop on August 31 ,2016 at 12:00 AM ET and UPN relaunches 24 hours later in its place.
Umm....We're talking about 2013 not 2016. 2016 is still a ways off :D *LOL!*
Sporting Events return to OTA Television on sundays to fill airtime (i.e Sunday Afternoon Baseball on FOX) and FOX airs MLB saturday afternoons ,saturday nights (when UFC on FOX doesn't air) and Sunday Afternoons.

The NBA and NHL both signs TV deals with FOX for 20-25 years.
Doubtful that FOX will wanna give up ALL of Sunday to MLB. As for the NBA & NHL, the NBA seems to be pretty happy with ESPN/ABC & doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon & FOX has already "Been there & done that" with the NHL (Remember when they had the rights back in the mid to late 1990s?). The NHL is better off on NBC & NBC Sports Network as they're NOT going to get a better deal than that

Cheers & 73 :D

* NBC will axe Days Of Our Lives & chop the last two hours of Today to make room for a slew of shows catering to Work At Home DADS (This lineup will include a version of The View featuring a group of men as hosts)

NBC tried that with a show called The Other Half, which had Dick Clark and Mario Lopez as hosts back when The View was new. Most men are likely watching ESPN SportsCenter or something else, and likely not enough would watch a daytime show like that even now.

I don't think NBC will chop down the Today show by two hours. More likely NBC expands it to a fifth hour and dilutes and tarnishes the show even more for short term profits.

Ok, more likely than those two scenarios are it gets reduced one hour, or the last hour gets a new anchor. They could let Kathie Lee Gifford go possibly in favor of a younger male like Nate Berkus.

NBC is too wary to try anything other than Today in the Morning. Prior to the Today third hour, there was Later Today which was a failure even though it followed and had semblance to Today. They know the most profitable route is milking that show.

Sinclair buys TV Stations in New York City ,Washington DC ,Boston ,Philadelphia ,Atlanta ,Miami
,Hartford ,CT ,Dallas ,Los Angeles ,San Francisco ,San Diego ,Phoenix and Chicago and airs their ROH Wrestling TV Show in those markets getting a 2.0 rating weekly.

AT&T's Live TV App includes a TV Tuner included for users to get local OTA tv.

I can't see a station in Boston being available for Sinclair to buy next year. CBS owns 2 in Boston (WBZ and WSBK), Hearst owns WCVB (and the ABC station in New Hampshire) and I don't see that being sold, Fox owns WFXT which I don't see them selling. Sumbeam owns WHDH and WLVI. That does not leave a lot left... there are a couple in Worcester which run Univision and Telefutura, NBC owns a station in New Hampshire which is LMA'd to the people who run Boston's Telemundo affiliate. I don't see iON selling their three signals in the Boston market. The only ones I think are left after that is Bill Binnie's station in NH and one in Lawrence. Binnie just bought his station a year or two ago and I am not sure what the Lawrence station is doing anymore but I doubt SInclair would want to spend the $$$$ needed to get that station even as a successful independent.

Las Vegas' KLAS-TV will change hands in 2013. Sinclair will be one of the bidders. If they are successful, they will "sell" KVCW to one of their related companies. I can't see Sinclair buying in the top 15 markets, though.

I do see Scripps selling KNXV-TV to Hearst, in exchange for Tampa Bay's WMOR-TV and cash. Employee morale at KNXV, especially in the newsroom, will improve.

A Showtime-Starz merger is the most logical combination. Showtime is known for having the weakest movie library of all premium channels, and Starz has yet to have a breakout original series. Put them together, and you'll have a premium package that rivals HBO. A Starz-HBO merger would just be overkill.

I don't think a Showtime/Starz would not help both parties because that would be an overkill as well.  Showtime has done OK with their lack of movies and Starz doesn't have a strong movie lineup as well.  Starz is going to lose Disney in 2017 and may lose Sony after 2016.  Plus, Showtime would have to shut down The Movie Channel and merger these channel with Encore.  I would not work at all.

I think it would make sense for Starz to merge with Epix.  In a Starz and Epix merge, there would be more movies from Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM, Sony and Disney (until 2017).  Plus, Epix would be in more households.  Starz and Epix could produce more original programming and have a larger budget to work with.

Personally, I think Starz would be best with Comcast, Rainbow Media or even Univision!

I think the market for KLAS would be more competitive than one might expect and it won't be a slam-dunk for Sinclair to get them. Even with Sinclair and Nexstar seemingly being the only companies with money, I can't see Gannett, Hearst, Belo, Scripps, etc. all saying no to a growing market with potential where the class of ownership has lagged way behind market size.

Last I checked, the Fox/Sinclair right to first refusal window is still open: KLAS to Meredith, KVVU and KVMY in separate deals to Fox. KVCW stays with Sinclair. Landmark gets money, Fox enters a growth market, Meredith trades up, Sinclair still keeps one outlier station, everyone wins.

KNXV/WMOR makes a lot of sense though I could see it being modified to be KNXV & WRTV for WMOR and cash. Indy always was an outlier for McGraw-Hill and they'd build Hearst's regional holdings between Louisville and Cincy.

As for Barrington, the rumor was a Sinclair/Nexstar split though how would you deal with Syracuse and Peoria where both already have stations? Could both be consolidated to one news department? Might Granite be left holding the bag or is this the year they finally sell?

The NHL is under contract with NBC and NBCSN until 2021 (likely to become 2022, since NBC gets a one year extension for each canceled season). Not likely that they will sign a new deal with anyone in the near term.

Here's one: TV Guide Network will be sold again, and likely re-branded and re-formatted at some point. Lionsgate wants out of it I believe. TV Guide Network has struggled since the rolling listings became irrelevant in the digital era.

I think Two and a Half will be renewed for the 2013-14 season, but it will be the final season!

If it does, it will be a miracle, considering CBS' track record with shows in the 8:30 Thursday slot for the last two seasons.

My biggest prediction....CBS will finally announce the development of a new Star Trek television series after an almost eight year absence from TV screens. This new series will be in the J.J. Abrams universe, but separate from the new films and not set aboard Enterprise.

Although the ratings are down from last season, Two and a Half Men has done well at 8:30pm on Thursday nights and has won its time slot.

One more prediction I thought of.....

NFL RedZone will be rebranded as NFL Network 2 & would be a 24/7 sports network devoted to not just the NFL but football in general. The rebranded channel would consist of the signature program NFL RedZone on Sundays, simulcasts of NFL Radio shows as well as NFL Films stuff & football games from NFL Classics during the weekdays & on Saturdays College RedZone which would be the college version of the signature show NFL RedZone except unlike ESPN GoalLine, College RedZone would start as the kickoff to the first game is approaching like the signature show does with the 1:00 PM ET NFL games on Sundays & would stay on the air until the last play of the last game to complete play

In addition, there will not only be NFL Fantasy Live on Sundays just as there is now but there would also be a College Fantasy Live for Fantasy Football Fanatics who keep track of things like Heismann candidates. Finally both NFL RedZone & College RedZone would wrap up their respective broadcasts with the now famous Touchdown Montage (Time permitting on NFL RedZone of course)

Can you imagine what a Touchdown Montage of Touchdowns scored on Saturdays would look like? Can you imagine seeing something like that set to music? That would be a show in & of itself :D

What do you guys think?

Cheers & 73 :D
