2013 Predictions

"Two and a Half Men" will end after this season.

CBS and Viacom will re-merge, reactivating Paramount Television, and their syndicated shows ("Wheel of Fortune", "Judge Judy", etc.) will be distributed under by the "new" Viacom.

Joel McHale will sign with Fox to host a late-night talk show after his "Soup" contract ends in 2014.

Regarding NBC's Thu primetime for Fall, what do you think the lineup will be?

8:00 Community
8:30 Up All Night
9:00 (Michael J. Fox sitcom)
9:30 Parks and Recreation

Or, will 'Community' and 'Up All Night' face cancellations, leading to a more significant lineup change?

Community has yet to make an appearance this season and you are giving it the lead off slot on Thursdays next Fall? I think the fact it has yet to air is as much as vote of 'no confidence' as you can get. The show is a victim of it's own hype, from the fired creator/producer to the show's brazenly loud but miniscule internet followers.

I don't know with NBC. It gave Community Thu night last year when it wasn't hot either. NBC kept Scrubs for so long, but never acted like it really wanted to air the show either. It always got rescheduled, dumped, tossed around and new episodes were never plugged. None of the Scrubs stars were asked to host SNL. But it somehow managed to stick on NBC for as long as it did.

On the other hand, NBC loved Will & Grace, all four hosted SNL (when none are major stars), and the show always got plugged.

I'm fairly sure that both "Community" and "Up All Night" are goners after this season.

As for "Scrubs", Zach Braff did host an episode of SNL, while Debra Messing was the only "Will & Grace" castmember who never did.

I forgot one more important prediction:

TBS will quietly cancel Conan O'Brien's talk show, and there won't be as much uproar over it as there was when NBC pulled him. Conan will go on to open up for pop star (and his most despised repeat guest) Ke$ha.

Why did Conan 'despise' Ke$ha? Obviously I don't watch the show, but am curious. Wifey wants news at 11...happy wife, happy life.

Ok, I must have missed when he was on, which was in 2007, season 7 of his show?

Of the two, Community seems canceled already, Up All Night 60% chance canceled.

I wonder why NBC isn't just burying Community in the summer like it does with certainty when it knows it wants to cancel something. Either way, it will be an almost full cleanup of the NBC Thu night schedule, which seems to happen once a decade or so.

She's been on his show three times. His Facebook fans, not him, didn't like the choice of her as "musical guest."

Here's one...

History continues to develop more dumbed down outdoorsy "on the job" shows....

A&E continues to churn out more phony shows about "collectibles" (more Storage Wars, Shipping Wars, Barter Kings, etc.)

NBC owned a piece of Will & Grace- so there was more long term incentive to promote the show and its stars- while Scrubs was always produced by ABC, so NBC had less incentive to promote it as they didn't have an ownership stake.

My guess is that NBC ditches Community and goes with the following lineup:

8:00 Up All Night
8:30 Parks and Recreation
9:00 Go On
9:30 the New Normal

Greenblatt has said they want to move away from the single camera comedies towards more traditional sitcoms but I think they'll try to shore up Thursday with "Go On" which has been the one new comedy that has attracted any viewers this season.

You want predictions? Okay, you've got 'em!

1. Pan European network Eurosport will begin airing on DirecTV and Dish Network. Cable companies will resist any thoughts of adding it, but eventually they'll do it.
2. Meanwhile, up in Canada, on New Year's Eve, it's announced that CBC will lose the NHL to a Bell/Rogers consortium with TSN, RDS and SportsNet airing all the games on cable(no more OTA matchups on Saturday nights). CTV and Radio-Canada will air games on Sunday afternoons, selected playoff matchups and the Stanley Cup Finals.
3. This is not until 2021, but here goes. The NFL will negotiate a new Canadian TV contract with 1 p.m. games on TSN and RDS, 2 p.m. games on CTV and Radio-Canada and 4 p.m. games on City TV, CTV 2 and TVA sports. And CBC/Radio-Canada will get the Sunday night game, as well as the playoffs. And here in the USA, ESPN gets the 1 p.m. games, CBS will air the 2 p.m. games, and Fox airs the 4 p.m. games. You'll also see UniMas air the 2 p.m. games in Espanol. And NBC and Telemundo will air the Sunday night games. (All Times Eastern, of course).
4. Having lost the EPL, ESPN will carry English language coverage of the Liga MX and Copa MX with commentary by Tony Tirado and Toby Charles.
5.Nickelodeon and CTV will produce new episodes of "Fifteen."
6. NHK will start a new Japanese-language channel here in the USA. All programs will air commercial free with commercials airing between programs.
7. An all fine arts network will be started by Comcast. Classical music, arts cinema, ballet, drama, jazz and other cultural programs will air commercial free with commercials between programs.
8. Saturday morning cartoons will return to the CBS, ABC, NBC & Fox networks with the E/I requirements relaxed.
9. MTV and VH1 will stop airing reality shows and return to their music roots.
10. Bravo will go back to its fine arts roots.
11. Next Christmas, Home Shopping Club will bring back its Christmas Family Special from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve with their Yule Log airing between 3:00 p.m. Christmas Eve and 12:00 Midnight Christmas Night.
12. EWTN chaplain Father Joseph Mary Wolfe of the MFVA will become President of EWTN's rival Catholic TV based here in Boston.
13. We will have an all Irish channel, airing drama, music, culture, sports and live news from RTE in Dublin and TG4 in Connemara.
14. Original programming will return on Saturday nights to the networks, with mostly variety shows and live concerts.
15. Evening at Pops will air live on CBS in the USA and CBC in Canada.
16. RAIITALIA will sign-off for the last time, but a new RAI USA channel will take to the airwaves here in the USA.
17. The International Channel will return to the air.
18. CBC will start an American television channel featuring drama, arts, comedy, news and amaetur sports.
19. NBC will air every minute of the Olympics, as well as the English Premier League, live.
20. You'll see more World Cup qualifying matches on OTA TV here in the USA.
21. Shortwave broadcasting will be revived in the USA.
22. We might see our first Australian TV channel in the USA.
23. Finally, a channel dedicated to variety shows will begin airing on diginet and able.

Hey, it could happen. What do you say?

It still has an audience. Guys who live in rural Michigan and take target practice
on blue helmets.

Thank you. Since Sackville and Bonaire have closed down their transmitters, CRI, KBS International and Radio Taipei can use the WWCR transmitters in Nashville, Tennessee to relay their broadcasts to North America.

Why not CBC do this - relay CBLT/5 Toronto for the East Coast and CBUT/2 Vancouver for the West Coast. Who wants to watch an all new "Dragon's Den" at 5PM on the West Coast - from the Toronto or whatever CBC affilate?

Oh yes. NBC needs to start doing that. Thank goodness I have Comcast for the 2014 Winter Olympics, so I can watch CBC's coverage, LIVE. And NO more "horrible-coverage-with-Ryan-Seacrest-gossip-printed-all-over-it".

What about the Michael J. Fox series? I'd think the Matthew Perry series and Michael J. Fox series could anchor the night, with Parks keeping 9:30pm.

In the scenario "Up All Night" is kept, wouldn't they give "Parks and Rec" a better slot over "Up All Night", between the two, assuming the best slot is 9pm and the worst one is 8:30pm?

I guess it depends on how the shift to multi camera goes for "Up All Night"- as there is a real possibility that both it and "Parks" get pulled after this season (although "Parks" is much closer to the magic syndication number so its far less likely to go)

I wouldn't be surprised if the Alabama QB's girlfriend who was the subject of Brent Musberger's comments during the BCS championship Monday night will be among those selected for the fall 2013 season of "Dancing with the Stars."

*The new, earlier Jimmy Kimmel Live will seriously threaten to knock Letterman into 3rd. place.

And it's working; in his first night at 11:35, Kimmel beat Letterman though Leno still rules that time slot.

Got another one....

Khloe Kardashian starting her own daytime talk show aimed at 20-somethings similiar to the early days of Ricki Lake.

What I meant to say was NBC will air every moment of the Olympics in Sochi and Rio Live as it happens, as well as the English Premier League, which will also be live.

Yeah, enough with the shows about collectables. I was looking into spending some time on the weekends selling stuff at flea markets a few years ago and storage auctions were part of where I was going to get general crap to sell off dirt cheap (like many of the other vendors do) and then suddenly all these darn shows started and the auctions went from reasonable prices for obvious junk and other stuff to crazy inflated prices for even the worst junk because some tv watching fool thought someone MIGHT have hidden gold in the drawers of a tv cabinet that was taped shut so they wouldn't fall open as it's being moved. I attended one once and this one kid - not even 18? drove up the price of a bin from a reasonable $75-$125 to $725 because he actually thought he would find something of real value in one (I overheard him) and he even bid up his own bids twice making the auctioneer stop the auction to explain what was going on, this kid had no clue and the room was obviously not worth what he'd paid. The chance that he got even half of what he paid back would surprise me, but on the good side, is when people like this go to the auctions and blow everything on a room to find little more than cheap furniture and old clothes, they give up pretty easily (hey, anyone want an old mattress or analog TV?) At least prices have come down significantly more recently, but it was really bad when these shows first started. Also, out of all the shows that are on TV, the only one even close to reality is Auction Hunters, at least the auction segments are, as far as what they find and sell, well, IT IS TV.

I like Storage Wars - ONLY because of Barry Weiss. He's a cool man. All the cool cars he's got makes him stylish!
