2013 Radio Predictions for Hudson Valley and Albany

Now that the year is going to wind down and the world is not going to end this Friday, I would like to share some some of your predictions for Hudson Valley and Albany radio in 2013. I have a couple of predictions.

1. WEOK and WALL should go back to all-sports, because all of Cumulus stations is going to launch CBS Sports Radio this January, WFAN-AM in New York City is going to launch a 24/7 sports network. But I don't know if Mark West would continue to do mornings on WALL. WEOK & WALL is the home of Scott Shannon's "True Oldies Channel" is going nowhere in the upcoming Fall ratings. Thanks to WGNY's "Fox Oldies" where they did very well in the ratings, and the station is the home of Van Ritshie, Bob O, Buffalo Bob Corisino and Joe Manglass, and they're still competing with the new WBPM as a "Biggest Hits" station playing loads of 60's, 70's and 80's songs while WGNY playing 50's, 60's and 70's with lots of pre-1964 Beatles stuff, just like the way it sounded on CBS-FM since it launched back on 7/7/72 until it became "Jack" on 6/3/05.

2. Is WGNY should stay as "Fox Oldies"? Or if they can put new jingles which is the JAM's "Do It Again" package where they can sound a lot CBS-FM like. These PAMS re-sings gets too old, but it needs some new jingles, and a voiceover which is Ziggy to do liners. Ziggy does well with WROW's "Magic 590" and WTHK's "Thunder 106" in NJ as a country station, but he can be heard on CBS-FM and Ziggy would continue to do liners to this day. As for the "Fox Oldies" weather jingle, it gets tired, because the same jingle used on "The Fox" has changed, but I hope WGNY needs to have new jingles including the "Do It Again" package. If not, they should add more 70's and get rid of some 50's rock & roll and doo-wop, it sounds pretty dated unless you have Sirius/XM.

3. Is WKKF should flip to a comedy format? Many of the CC stations are now running "24/7 Comedy" and it becomes successful in Boston, MA and in Ellenville. Why not put it in Albany instead. If not, put it on WGY-AM at 810 and leave a news/talk format on WGY-FM at 103.1. WGY 810 will make way for a "24/7 Comedy" format. Stay tuned.

4. Is WFRH at 91.7 is staying with Family Radio because of WFME is flipping to an undecided country station in NYC? I've seen many posts in the New York board about 94.7 going country. Maybe, WDVY should put Family Radio on 106.3 to dump country to make room for a Christian format.

5. Now that any AM station including WEPN-AM at 1050 where they dumped ESPN Radio for a Spanish sports station "ESPN Deportes" back in September where it covers the entire Hudson Valley listening area including Poughkeepsie and most of the town and WEPN-FM at 98.7 which is now "ESPN Radio" where it didn't covered the entire listening area where it reaches Newburgh and no ESPN Radio affiliate in the Hudson Valley would carry local teams. My guess is, put a few translators to Poughkeepsie and in the Kingston area as well. Hudson Valley doesn't have an ESPN Radio affiliate, and if you go to Albany, you get an ESPN Radio affiliate at 104.5 "The Team" and if you can get an AM station to pick up ESPN Radio at night, you can hear it on WMVP in Chicago at 1000 AM, they got an ESPN Radio there, but I listened to it when I was out, and it's 50kw skywave. They got one in Boston and a few places to get their ESPN Radio fix for nighttime AM skywave signals.

That's all there is to it. Any thoughts about these predictions for 2013?

- Radio Disney sells/donates AM 1460 and it goes to a brokered/ethnic format
- CBS Sports Radio is on either a reborn 1540, or perhaps 590 displacing Magic
- 102.3 flips to Fox Sports and 980 goes Comedy (if not, 980 stays Fox Sports and 102.3 goes Alternative or Urban AC)
- No changes at Pamal stations (other than perhaps 590)
- 105.7 drops its entertainment news and goes more mainstream CHR

1. Capital Media (WHAZ) will make move for a better signal in the immediate Capital District. Either buying 96.7 FM or 1460 AM or both.
2. If Capital Media buys 1460, they pedal 1330, perhaps the outfit that bought out Anastos would take it real cheap and simulcast it with 1240.
3. 102.3 will change but will it be for sports or comedy?
4. 590 may go sports and put magic back on 100.9
5. 105.7 should go to a format like magic, as a class B1, they would have a superior signal to 100.9, and much better audio quality than 590AM.
6. 1540 as others have suggested would come back as sports, with a lot of play by play under new ownership.
(The owners of 1540 & 96.7 the former Crawford would exit the area)

I was told this was already done...(Capital Media (WHAZ) will make move for a better signal in the immediate Capital District. Either buying 96.7 FM or 1460 AM or both)

- Coop goes of WPDH whether is medical related or Cumulus finally realizes he's awful on air. CJ moves to WPDH and brings back some out of commission Hudson Valley radio personalities.

- The truth about WRWD and Tommy lee Walker comes out.

- There will be more religious programmed stations

Reporter: I take it that your prediction was in another topic, don't remember ever seeing it, I guess sometimes two people thnk alike.

Re #4: WFRH isn't going anywhere. 106.3 in Mount Kisco is pending sale to Family Radio already. They are waiting for FCC approval. It needs a waiver of the main studio rule and change to non-comm status. The plan is to repeat KEAR.

I was visiting the studio recently and over heard the sales guy mention this.

The biggest predictions I see will be in morning drive.

105.7 will be adding a local morning show. Bob Wolf will be returning somewhere the second week in January, but can't announce where yet. Could be Albany or Hudson Valley.

The PYX morning show will change hands again, likely Bob & Tom syndicated as the money axe continues to swing at CC.

WKKF will stay CHR/Rhythmic. I do agree that something has to give with three CHR's, but I highly doubt it will be 102.3

I don't see 24/7 comedy coming to Albany unless it's on an HD2 signal. There's no money to be made and the content is constantly repeated.

I see a morning change happening at WFLY. The entire crew moves to Townsquare/105.7 for greener pastures.

980 will stay sports. Even though the station has no ratings, Wyland's show is a cash cow. The format cannot compete with ESPN ratings wise, even on an FM signal.

Hot 99.1 goes away in the fall.

Magic 590 goes away and picks up CBS Sports.

The 810/103.1 split stays the same.

More consolidation and jockless dayparts all around.

They are adding a new morning show, they want it by Jan, already announced on Business Review.

Wolf does return, station announced anytime.

I'm hearing they are pleased. But, ya never know.

Agree.

I don't agree. Their ratings are great. I don't see them going anywhere. It's gonna take A LOT of $$$...Never say never.

Back to FM?

The 810/103.1 split stays the same.

Agree.

My guess is that all Cumulus stations in the Hudson Valley including WPDH, WCZX, WKXP, WZAD, WEOK, WALL and WKNY are going to launch a new traffic network called "Right Now Traffic", and they're going to compete with CC's Total Traffic. This is a step forward to Radiate Media and Cumulus to help launch its new traffic reports. I don't like the way CC is doing traffic updates during the entire week. Let Cumulus do their thing.
