It's 12.4 million, and that pales to the show that consistently drew 20 to 30 million viewers between 1976 and 2019. Between 2010 and 2017, the Grammys consistently delivered in the mid-20 millions or better. In 2012, nearly 40 million tuned in.
That was before the explosion of streaming video. The rise of Netflix and other services has further diluted the audience for real-time linear TV. The 12 million figure only includes those who watched the show live. It doesn't include people who DVR'd it for viewing at their own convenience. It also doesn't include all of the people who watched clips from the show on social media.
The challenge for Nielsen moving forward is that they're counting an ever-shrinking number of people who still watch TV in real time. In 2021, Nielsen reported that the amount of streaming viewership exceeded the amount of traditional viewership. They will have to find a way to incorporate that change in viewing to their methodology.
