2023 TV Predictions

The highest rated soap right now is where they cancelled Another World for being the 3rd lowest soap at the time. The other two were Port Charles and Sunset Beach. Another World had a little bit higher numbers when it got cancelled then what Young and the Restless does now.

That has nothing to do with soaps. Prime time shows considered a hit now have lower ratings than decades ago. The pie is split more ways; success metrics adapt accordingly.

I also think that within a couple of years, CBS will cancel it's remaining soaps ("The Young And The Restless" and "The Bold And The Beautiful"), with "Y&R" probably getting replaced by a talk show and "B&B"'s half-hour returned to local CBS affiliates and the daytime schedule rearranged so CBS affiliates, regardless of time zone, get the hour between 12 Noon and 1 P.M. local time to fill with programs of the station's choice. If CBS does this, I could see the network strongly suggest to it's affiliates that they expand their local Noon newscasts to a full hour.

The reason I see the demise of the soaps is that viewership has gone down and production costs have gone up. I don't think daytime soaps are as profitable to the networks (and the shows' producers) as they were 40, 30, 20, 10, or even five years ago.

Again, I doubt this will occur as soon as 2023, but maybe in 2024 or 2025.
Perhaps when Eric Braeden dies.

Apparently one of my predictions came sooner than expected about an apps package.

NBCUniversal has expanded Peacock’s distribution, with the service last week joining DirecTV Stream’s lineup at a discounted price.

DirecTV Stream customers can now add a Peacock Premium subscription (with ads) to their plan for $2.99 per month – $2 off the regular price of $4.99 per month. They also have the benefit of managing Peacock, along with any other streaming subscription purchased via DirecTV, under a single bill.

Seeing the ratings success of Women of Wrestling WWE brings back SuperStars and moves Main Event to weekend syndication under the NBC Universal and/or Fox syndication umbrellas.

TBS moves AEW Dynamite to Saturdays at 6pm due to dropping ratings or doesn't renew their TV deal.

I think ABC will eventually cancel "General Hospital" and either replace it with some sort of talk show, or give back it's midafternoon time slot back to local affiliates in return for taking back the 9-10 A.M. hour to expand "Good Morning America" to a third hour (which may also trigger a change of title for "GMA 3"---maybe to "Good Afternoon America"?).
The problem with Good Morning America expanding to 9-10am is Kelly and Ryan and The View. Kelly and Ryan airs at 9 on many ABC affiliates including the O&O’s. It could move to 10 in the Eastern Time Zone, but outside the Eastern Time Zone that is what time The View airs. I suppose GMA could air 6-9am outside of the Eastern Time Zone but that would take away an hour of local news if the ABC station didn’t have a sister station to put it on.

I could see this, but a news program to compete with NBC News Daily replacing Y&R, CBS doesn’t need another talk show. Maybe call it CBS Daytime News. I actually could see The Talk getting cancelled instead. I do like the idea of encouraging hour long noon newscasts on the CBS affiliates and moving B&B to P+.

10:00/9:00 Let’s Make A Deal
11:00/10:00 TPIR
Noon Local News
1pm/11am CBS Daytime News
2pm/1pm Y&R

Here is one to look out for production companies are syndicating shows for places like Roku, Amazon Freevee, Samsung and Xumo. Yes syndication is not just for cable and OTA TV its also for TV apps too in this case WB is syndicating content outside of HBO Max and Discovery apps to other places mentioned here.

Warner Bros. Discovery said it planned to get into the FAST business, but for now is aiming to sell packages of its shows to existing streaming platforms such as Roku, Amazon Freevee, Samsung and Xumo.

"Warner Bros. Discovery continues to strategically assess how best to maximize audiences and monetization opportunities for its content," the company said in a statement. "The company has recently decided to license certain HBO and HBO Max original programming to third party FAST services to be part of a packaged offering which will drive new, expanded audiences for these series. As we prepare for this transition, these series will be coming off of the HBO Max service."

The shows no longer on HBO Max include the popular series Westworld.

The best solution would be to put The View at 2 Eastern, 1 Central in GH’s slot and return 11am/10am to affiliates. That would allow GMA to expand in the morning from 7am to 10am and affiliates to air Kelly and Ryan at 10am.

MLS is going behind its own App/Streaming Package pay wall and Apple Plus this upcoming season. It's success will depend on how many sign-ups they actually get either with the standalone game package or Apple TV (this is why I think live music events will be added to sweeten at least the Apple Pot).

Fox Nexstar stations that have a secondary channel that's either a CW like KCWE in the future and have to program 7am to 9am or My Network TV.

Don't forget Let's Make A Deal has an afternoon feed for affiliates who prefer that, at 3 PM ET/2 PM CT and PT.
Yeah forgot to list that

Here is another one other Paramount owned CBS and CW affiliates will follow a similar brand as KPIX San Francisco by calling themselves CBS News Your City Here as part of a ploy to emphasize the CBS News and Paramount+ apps for their viewers. Note this was initially going to be for CBS Detroit where their duopolies would have CBS News Detroit when their launch dates were proposed.

Elon Musk starts his own TV network. Gets sued by NBC for ripping off and paraphrasing their former slogan, labeling his new network "Musk See TV!"
Dang I was thinking a ripoff of the Apprentice (Donald Trump's old TV show before he became President)
With all drama surrounding Elon Musk getting into disputes with staff and investors in both the Bayshore Freeway corridor where Venture Capitalists are located (a section of US-101 from San Francisco to San Jose) and the Austin, TX area.

It would be the most watched Reality Show in the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin, TX.

Here is the clip. Note the parody in the video was originally about Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos scandal in the reference.
