20th Anniversary of September 11th

As we approach the 20th anniversary of 9/11, I wanted to share a couple tracks that we created back in 2001.

U2 - Peace On Earth (WTC Mix)
KOMP Las Vegas Morning Show - Bin Laden Bomb Song

David Martin sent you 2 items

Both tracks received national airplay; and both were featured in Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly magazines. On that day, I popped in a VHS blank tape into the VCR at work and rolled tape on the Las Vegas ABC affiliate. Starting at 5:30 PT, right after Bush spoke from the White House, I stopped the tape and started reviewing the hours of footage to dub into my shiny new DAW from Spectral Audioengine. I picked U2's Peace On Earth to interject the news footage. I finished the production at 11:45 PM on September 11th. A couple of months later, the morning show at KOMP Las Vegas created the Bin Laden Bomb Song that also received national airplay and even had a web cartoon that someone produced using the audio track. A web search will turn up the cartoon. So, feel free to use either of these tracks in your programming.

hard to believe it's been 20 years this year, i remember the event like yesterday, i didn't see it live because i was in class in my sophomore year of High School in Campbell, Texas and when the first plane hit, it happen right around the pre-class breakfast break before the first bell rang (which was around 7:46 AM CT), the second plane hit just 3 mins into my first class which was 8:03 AM CT, and the crash of AA Flight 77 into the Pentagon occured at 8:37 AM CT while i was still in the first class and didn't hear about it until the tail end of class and it was Biology class too, so one of my friends made a crass comment about how that help reduce the population of something like that. the first tower collapsed around close to 9 AM CT and the second collapsed occurred at 9:28 AM CT, and United 93 crashing into a field in Pennsylvania occured around 9:03 AM CT (an hour after the second plane went into the WTC South Tower).

Our then-principal told us to turn on our TV's that fateful morning, and we kept it on until reports of people jumping were aired. I turned off the TV, then told my students, "Ladies and gentlemen, we are now at war." When I managed our school's FM station (retired this past June), we would air about 2 hours' worth of appropriate music every September 11th.

Several times in past years, threads have appeared spontaneously where we recalled what each of us was doing when we heard of the terror attacks on 9/11.

I was on an American Airlines flight to Mexico at LAX and the plane had just rotated when, of a sudden they applied reverse thrust and the brakes and then went faster than I have ever seen a plane taxi back to the gate where we were told to get out of the airport as fast as we could.

I drove to our stations where coverage had already begun. We were all apprehensive... which means frightened... that there would be more attacks.

I remember here in California I just woke up and heard the initial reports of a local plane crash at the World Trade center. Once the other planes were targeted then we realized it was bigger and worse than initially reported from Pentagon to Pennsylvania. I remember hearing that all the planes were supposed to be at LAX or SFO at the time before being hijacked.

I first heard about it on the radio. Roger Williams' "Near You" had played. The DJ on one of the national satellite formats said the second tower had been hit, which was proof the first crash wasn't an accident, and Saddam Hussein was suspected of being responsible. I pictured what happened to the Empire State Building during WWII and never thought it was that serious. The radio station continued regular programming as long as i was in the car. Then I was at a library where the Internet was slow, and everyone gathered around this one computer to see pictures. Whether live video was possible I don't remember. Someone said the Pentagon had been attacked too, so that meant we were at war.

I went out and walked for exercise. I also had to pay my power bill. On my way I got something to drink at Dairy Queen where there was always a radio station playing music. Not this day. It was continuous news. Same at the former bank branch where power bill payments were accepted. I went back to the library and read newspapers as I normally did.

I went out to the car as usual when Paul Harvey's "Rest of the Story" was on. Since it aired as usual i figured things weren't so bad.

I returned to the radio station where I first heard the news when I got in the car to go back home. A man said the towers were GONE. And 10,000 or maybe 50,000 people were dead. What? Those towers couldn't have fallen. I must have been the last person to know this.
