21st Century Technology User- HD radio is not one listed!

While the iPhone is not HD radio and some have a problem (pro-HD) with it being discussed here on this forum, I find it is HD (High Definition) in the sense that it's digital transmission of internet radio/music so in essense it's debatable on this forum!

Now the below discusses the advent of what the 21st Century technology user wants in his/her pocket...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20070711/cm_csm/ymagnusson_1

Here's my theory: Apple can only create really interesting products if Jobs understands the end-user. And Jobs does not understand the 21st-century user. In this century, people don't send memos to each other.

Today, people chat; they blog; they share multimedia such as pictures, video, and audio; they debate ("flame") each other on forums; they link with each other in intricate webs; they switch effortlessly between different electronic personae and avatars; they listen to Internet radio; they battle over reputation; they podcast; they do mash-ups; they vote on this, that, and the other; they argue on wiki discussion groups.

Notice that in it's entirety of this article no mention of HD radio comes to mind or that matter what the user wants as far as his/her listening pleasure... would they want to carry an iPhone along with a portable HD radio? I think NOT.

Apple still has a long way to go to get the 'right' technology into peoples hands but they're on the right track. ;)

Ibiquity, the NAB, and of course the HD Radio Alliance are way off mark, but what do you expect from them and the pro-HD guys? :p

Not to mention 10 million iPhones will be sold by the end of 2008... time to start buying Apple shares!

Perhaps, the pro-HD crowd has been chased off, realizing that HD is DOA - I have seen some of them posting on other boards. One of them made a desperate attempt to zing me yesterday, but it was pretty feeble.

One of the most amazing things about the iPhone is the successful marketing behind it.

The other day my parents, both of whom are 89, asked me if they should buy an iPhone. They understood the product; what it is, what it can do. They liked the large screen. My parents also understand about HDTV and want one as well. They know that, at some point, analog TV will be going away.

Conversely, I asked my parents if they had heard yet about HD Radio. "No", they replied, "What is it?" I explained it to them and all they wanted to know is if HD-Radio would make their current radios obsolete. "No, you can still listen to music and news on your current radios but not digitally", I said. They weren't interested in HD-R. They're more interested in the iPhone and HDTV.

So here you have two elderly people who know all about the iPhone but nothing about HD Radio. To me that says plenty about the total failure of HD-R in winning the minds and hearts of the public. The campaign to inform and sell them has, thus far, failed its objective and the concept itself, listening to radio digitally, is just not compelling enough to generate excitement.

You are absolutely correct db, and they are not assumptions like the pro-HD crowd would have you believe.

Everyone I talked to including like you said explaining 'what HD is' to them doesn't give a hoot or concern over HD radio. My daughter in college has had several class projects on mass marketing and I suggested to her to take a poll on HD radio vs Ipods/Internet radio and the results are staggering and HD deosn't even rate anywhere, Ipods and then internet radio followed by cellphones, then satelite radio in that order.

HD radio died on it's first rollout 2-3 years ago.

Apple had the buzz on the iPhone for over 2 years and the consumers were in a frenzy to get their hands on one, now it seems Apple is soon to launch the 'iPhone Nano' based on the Ipod Nano by Christmas time for those that believed $599-699 was too much money for a device such as the iPhone, yet those same consumers can't see spending $100 for an HD table radio they really don't care to buy, yet the iPhone Nano is to sell for $199-299 and even less based on contracts with cellphone companies.
