I remember it well. I was on the air at WCAM at the time and we were a daytime only station. We were having work done on our tower, and at the time, the tower lights had to be turned on at the tower. Sign off was about 6 o'clock and the skies began getting dark shortly before sign off. Once the station signed off the air, I was going to walk to the tower behind the station to turn on the lights, and the sky was filled with extremely dark clouds, the winds were blowing hard, and there was an erie color of greenish yellow in the sky. The skies opened up as I was headed to turn off the lights. The static electricity was crackling off the stick. (We had an old TV tower) It was thundering and lightning everywhere. I decided to take my car and drive it to the base of the tower because it was raining hard. Once I got next to the tower, it was pouring, there was hail. I waited in my car, figuring it was the safest place to be in a thunderstorm, especially since I was right next to a rather large lightning rod. Lightning never struck the tower, but the lights went on about 30 minutes late that night. I think it was on the 7:00 report on WIS that I learned how severe the storms were that were passing through our area. I do remember as I waited next to that tower asking myself what I was doing there! If I remember correctly, one or two twisters touched down near Lake Wateree a few miles away about the time I was by that tower waiting to turn on the lights! Remember the day well, but not especially the date. I was on the air at FOX when a tornado touched down in Irmo in the early 90s. That was another crazy night to be on the air!
