24/7 Christmas Music in Providence This Year?

I see I've started a trend. I originally posed this question on the New York radio board, and now I'm seeing this same question popping up on other R-I market boards. It's good to be a trendsetter...

Anyway, which station do you think will go all-holiday hits in Providence this year?

My money's on WALE.

I already saw the first Halloween decorations on a house yesterday September 30th. Cobwebs from the trees, Numerous pumpkins...etc. You gotta love the idiots who turn one day into an entire MONTH! These are the same idiots who will have the Christmas decorations up on November 1st. That way they can have their TWO MONTHS OF CHRISTMAS!!!

Yeah. Radio stations skip over Thanksgiving now like it doesn't even matter. Department stores do it too. Thanksgiving isn't all that profitable of a holiday for anyone except for Turkey farmers. So retail outlets like to pretend that it doesn't even exist. This just proves that it's all about the money. I went for a walk today and as I walked I was thinking about this very topic. Christmas. I thought about how people have turned one day into a 4 week celebration. Then a 6 week celebration. Getting closer to 8 weeks as each year passes. I love Christmas just as much as the next person. But I don't want to hear Christmas music until December. There is something to be said about the 12 days of Christmas. So start playing Christmas music on December 13th. I would be fine with that. At least that makes sense! But the first week of November? That's a joke.. right? It should be. Something really strange about Christmas music before Thanksgiving. It's not even logical.

I prefer to not even think about Christmas until December 18th. I try to stay true to this plan each year. It gives me 7 shopping days which is plenty. I might occasionally order something online a couple of weeks ahead of time. But other than that I prefer to not stretch out a one day holiday into weeks and months. Start celebrating your Birthday 6 or 7 weeks ahead of time and see if you don't get some strange looks. So I would rather not do that nonsense with holidays either.

I remember last year, 94HJY was broadcasting dead air for most of Christmas. Here I am, visiting family driving from house to house, wanting to listen to something other than Christmas music, and there's no HJY. At least there was WBRU.

As far as starting Christmas music so early, the past couple of years, people that are not radio nerds like us complained about stations switching to Christmas music so early, but after a week give in and listen anyway. The earliest any station should start an all-Christmas format, in my opinion, is the Monday before Thanskgiving.

I'm betting on Lite 105 and B101 to be the stations spreading holiday cheer this year.

Listen, my calender says Christmas on December 25th. Nowhere does it say Christmas from November 7th through December 25th. I don't care how great Jesus is. He still wasn't born on more than one day.

Oh I see your point. I'm not faulting the employees that have to follow directions. This is an issue that I have with Management. Whoever the top guy is who says that Christmas music starts before Thanksgiving. That idiot.

As someone who was still in music radio when "Dear Mister Jesus" was a format crossover smash, and who hated the song with an unbridled passion, will someone please explain to me why EVERY station feels like it has to play Christmas music on Christmas Day? I want to be the guy who kills it at noon, for people who are as sick of it as I am..and go back to normal programming..for normal people..who are normal..and sick of Christmas by the time the damn day arrives.

I usually watch "The Godfather" and maybe some porn on Christmas Day...I live alone, usually have to work the next day and have no desire to fly across the country for a meaningless holiday at one of my sister's houses...

Look I understand that for 34-54 females, Christmas Music makes them feel all warm and tingley and gets their wallets out their purses..and that radio stations that do the all Christmas thing can get their salespeople on the streets and sell the snot out of it..

I find that the Christmas music every year keeps me out of stores and keeps my radio off from Halloween to New Year's Day.

There is something to be said about the 12 days of Christmas. So start playing Christmas music on December 13th. I would be fine with that.

It looks like Lite Rock 105 is doing something unusual. As of right now, it looks like the online stream is playing Holiday music while the station itself is still usual AC. I wonder if this will change in a few weeks.
