24/7 Comedy Coming To Raleigh/Durham - But Where?!

WQDR then: "We Quit Doing Rock."

WQDR now: "We Quit Doing Roger Miller."

I like the idea of comedy radio. We're going to need it with the upcoming election, or is that a comedy in itself? Seriously, I think everyone is going to be sick of the political show talking heads, so Comedy might be a great alternative for talk radio junkies.

If its anything like Funny 850 in Norfolk its just going to be stand up bits. They had some pretty funny stuff on that station. When will it debut because I'm looking foward to it maybe I can actually start listening to the radio again. (havent listened to the radio since 96Rock changed). Just wish it was on FM.

CMG does have that 98.7 FM translator up in Louisburg they got with the big Capitol Broadcasting sports swap a few years back (think it's still rebroadcasting WBBB)...they would have to move it south and likely find another channel, though with 98-7 Simon/Greensboro and CBC's rock station in Jacksonville interfering.

"Funny 570" won't be on until their antenna is rebuilt, or in their case, the WPTF site is modified to have their signal diplexed into it. Could be a little while.

This sounds like a format that is set up to disappoint. How much truly great, edgy comedy will they be able to play? I have a feeling it will be your typical classic rock style rotation with the Blue Collar Comedy boys replacing AC/DC, The Stones, and The Who as core artists.

I haven't heard one of these, but I thought there was a reason All Stand-Up All The Time was on satellite. I'm assuming this will be nothing but Blue Collar and Sinbad? Or will it be just one long beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep?

Like bands, there are A LOT of comedians/comics working the clubs.
They will have to bring up some "unknowns" or the rotation will get stale quicker than hearing "Slow Ride" or "Feel Like Makin' Love" every weekend night about 8....

Too bad Dr. Demento doesn't do his show anymore... :)

570 AM silent carrier up today

"Little" may have been more the operative term than "while". On the way into work this morning, I noticed that there was a silent carrier on at 570 kHz. This was around 7:50-8 a.m. Thursday, and definitely local, judging by its strength.

Yeah, Seinfeld + static don't mix... Still, some AM operators looking to think outside the box may start leaning on "Comedy 24/7"...

@quad: Dr. Demento still does a show - but it's for subscribers only... unless he's scrapped that plan...

Is this one of those "pretty much free" formats that play all day and give operators 6-10 minutes of ad time an hour? Is that how they're building their affiliates?

Radio in Raleigh has always been a "Comedy" except in the old days!!!

Oh, wow. I used to like his show. The last station that had it which I could listen to was the station which is now "Lite" 102.9 in Charlotte. By the way, that's just a name and not a description. Before I moved out of the area where that station was, the co-owned AM, now a Rush Limbaugh station, kept running it but the nighttime signal wasn't too good. I heard the show was on a Chicago station that I might have picked up, but I never tried.

The AM did, but it's just because they lost their tower in the tornado outbreak. Why is taking so long to come back?

The station playing big band music in the northern part of the Charlotte area, a simulcast partner of the bigger and stronger station on the south end, has a similar problem. They removed the old tower before building the new one, and they've been off the air for several months. I don't know how long it'll take.

I believe you're thinking of WLUP.

Those sounds on a loop would make for some great "stunting" prior to the launch of an all-comedy format - but they probably couldn't pull that off in the Southeast, much less on an AM stick...
