$249 - 1984 12" B&W TV

This is the model of TV I have and use weekly to verify that my time shifting [from streaming on my PC to my VHS VCR] is started properly.

It's amazing to me that people seem willing to pay $100s for old, small screen B&W TVs, why (gaming in B&W?)?

Why would anyone be fool enough to pay $249 for a 1980s TV that's all but useless today, even if it's color? If it's B/W, it isn't worth the $75-100 that it sold for as brand new.

Wait.. you have your pc video feeding a VCR and recording to a VHS tape, @kfbkfb ? Dear god, why in heavens?

Going OT...my (PC) HDMI->NTSC color (RCA DHCOME device)->VCR (S-VHS blank tape!) setup allows me to "sample" movies to see if I want to buy the movies on used/new DVDs/Blu-rays (I end up buying about half the movies I time shift), my B&W TV is connected to the VCR RF out to verify that the picture and sound are being sent to the VCR.

RCA device (~$30), VCR (~$10 - Thrift Shop), S-VHS tape (~$1)

Buy them/download them online.. don't see why youve created this riggamaroll nonsense.. its not making an ounce of sense to me.

There are gamers who believe that older pre-ATSC games look better on CRT sets. But still it would make more sense for it to be color than black & white.

As for Kirk's ideas I can't see the point. Considering that you can even get used HDTV's for $25 or less now at thrift stores why buy any CRT for watching movies?

Interesting to see an old CRT TV but at this point they belong in tech history museums given that if one just buys old TV's the parts are no longer made if it breaks down.

If there are people that are really interested in CRT-TV's and computer monitors the most sought models had to be in the early to mid 2000's right when LCD TV's reliability were not well known or were considered luxuries at the time.

To clarify - I watch the streamed (recorded on VHS) movies on my 19" CRT (color) TV or my 32" LCD TV (with surround sound, of course), I currently have 5 streaming services (2 free, 2 at a promotional price, 1 full price = ~$10/month total).

Really, it's the same thing I've been doing since I got both a cable movie channel and a VCR (~40 years ago), record a movie from cable, if I liked it, I'd probably buy a copy on a 12" LaserDisc or Beta/VHS pre-recorded tape.

I have saved my time shifted copy of Beverly Hill Cop 4 since it isn't on a disc yet.

but whyyy ohhh why do you still do it? its a useless, outdated mode/way of doing things, and one too many steps involved... youre downgrading quality by recording the streaming onto VHS then playing it back...... you lose quality that way

Just to go off topic even more...back in the day (~40 years ago), cable movie channel movies were (nearly all) pan and scan and, on my 12 channel cable system, just had mono sound, now, using the Edge browser, I get the streamed movies in widescreen and with stereo sound (downmixed surround sound, which I decode with Dolby Pro-Logic).

(I know there's a major picture quality loss at VHS SLP, but it's fine for me for 1 time viewing)

There are people who get excited when they find a CRT. There are Facebook sites about it.
Find - yes! Buy- NO. I get the whole notalgia bit as someone who was a member of the first TV generation. Yes, back then I could tell a Sylvania from and RCA or a Zenith, Magnavox or Admiral, but I'd never invest in old tech. I like my 55" that hangs on the wall thus saves space.

Looked up a Montgomery Ward catalog from 1984 that priced a 12 inch B&w at 90 dollars. Factoring in inflation that works out to 270 bucks today

Those modern day tv's are sorry, they're small
55”, 65” and 85” are “small”? 🤔🤨😖
and the sound is very tinny.
Nobody who is serious about audio quality listens via the native speakers on flatscreen TVs. They use soundbars or run it through a quality audio system.

Audio on most vintage TVs was at best mediocre.🥱

Have your hearing checked.😆
Give me a crt tv any day of the week.
And go back to standard definition?🤮🤮🤮

Add a vision test to that hearing test.🤪

In 1985 our main (and only) TV set needed a repair, so I took it in to be fixed. To tide us over I bought a 13” B&W TV at Montgomery Ward for $39. Actually sporadically used it for many years, often for TV DX.
