On September 22nd, 1981 25 years ago yesterday, the old WCAU 98.1 FM changed to a top-40 Hot hits format. You thoughts on the top-40 format on 98 from 81-87?

In it's first ratings book it had a one million cume. And all the radio watchers, critics, and wannabes said it was repetitive, too tightly formatted, and immature.

Is there any tribute websites about WCAU ?? Or airchecks ?? Like to read/hear more about this station.....

No. I wished that someone did.

Let's Get The Call Letters Right!

Hate to be the stickler here, but before launching any tribute sites let's get straight that the station in question was "WCAU-FM"... "WCAU" was the co-owned AM station at 1210 by this time!

CRMC is right on... Mike Joseph knew what he was doing...

Best radio station ever in Philly. Outside of z100 and kzzp of the 80's, they were the best in the country.

Steve Jobbs thanks all of you in radio for not programming stations like cau anymore.

George: You weren't being the stickler. You were simply being more specific than Mr. May was. It was a good idea on your part to clarify that WCAU-FM is the station being discussed here.

Julius: What are YOUR thoughts on the WCAU-FM Top 40 format during that time period? What does you think? Why or why not?

Well based on the airchecks I have of the station from the aircheck collectors, it was a really good station and the way the format was done was great. The jocks were full of energy and the songs they played was also good. No wonder 98 was Philly's number 1 music station in the 80's.

Very good Julius. Thumbs Up to you for providing your own opinion on a station that you want others to talk about. It's about time you have given your own opinion on a station, without including useless ramblings. Let's keep this up from now on. On top of asking others what they think, please provide your own opinions. That's one way discussions get started.

What was good about Hot Hits is that it made CHR more youthful. In 1980-81 Top 40 was way too AC sounding, Hot Hits put an end to that.
