3 CNN staff members resign over retracted story

NEW YORK (AP) -- CNN accepted the resignations Monday of three journalists involved in a retracted story about a supposed investigation into a pre-inaugural meeting between an associate of President Donald Trump and the head of a Russian investment fund.

The story was posted on the network's website on Thursday and was removed, with all links disabled, Friday night. CNN immediately apologized to Anthony Scaramucci, the Trump transition team member who was reported to be involved in the meeting.

The story's author, Thomas Frank, was among those who resigned, according to a network executive who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss personnel issues. Also losing their jobs were Eric Lichtblau, an assistant managing editor in CNN's Washington bureau, and Lex Haris, head of the investigations unit.

CNN, in initially taking down the story, said it didn't meet its editorial standards. The episode is a damaging blow for a network that Trump has frequently derided as "fake news," and for a story that never even made it onto any of CNN's television networks.

The story had been quickly questioned both internally and externally, including by the conservative site Breitbart News. It was determined that the story was posted without going through the expected checks and balances for a story of such sensitivity, the executive said.

The failure to follow proper procedures is what led to the resignations, the CNN executive said.

It's not immediately clear what in the story is factually incorrect, or whether CNN will continue to report on the issue. The retracted story had said the Senate intelligence committee was looking into a January 16 discussion between Scaramucci and Kirill Dmitriev, whose Russian Direct Investment Fund guides investments by U.S. entities in Russia. Scaramucci, in the story, said he exchanged pleasantries in a restaurant with Dmitriev.

The report also said that two Democratic senators wanted to know whether Scaramucci had indicated in the meeting whether sanctions against Russia would be lifted, a decision that could impact the investment fund.

Following the retraction, Scaramucci tweeted that CNN "did the right thing. Classy move. Apology accepted. Everyone makes mistakes. Moving on."

Wow this is an investigative story that happen to land on CNN's website and retracted due to issues not yet verified over the Trump Russia Meeting.

Now Jeff Zucker's future at CNN is uncertain due to the fallout of the Trump Russia story.

"Sean Hannity and others on the right are saying that CNN needs to sack Jeff Zucker."

That's sort of predictable, isn't it? Not really saying Zucker's future is uncertain. Just that CNN's second biggest critic now wants blood. Yet when Hannity promotes fake stories, as he often does, no one at CNN says he should be fired. No one at CNN or MSNBC said sponsors should drop their ads from his show. He has an opinion and a point of view, and he's allowed to say it.

Meanwhile, CNN has accepted responsibility for their reporting, and the people involved have all been fired. They will probably never work in news again. Isn't that enough? We really don't know that the story was wrong. Just that it didn't meet editorial standards. That's a big difference, and not a reason to fire the head of the network.

Shoe has dropped now Trump cast stones on CNN. But then again the casting of stones against is more about getting the Pro-Trump audiences to Trump friendly outlets like Sinclair, Infowars, Newsmax, and One America News. However at Fox News there's been a Split decision on how to handle Trump. You have Chris Wallace having a hard time handling Trump's Lawyer on Fox News.

Sheppard Smith is also under fire for his handling of the Trump tweets. Some viewers want him fired.

Unless President Trump and his cabinet call for Shepard Smith to be removed from Fox News or call for a boycott against Fox News nothing will happen. Yes its lots of smoke and lots of ploys for Pro-Trump Audiences to go to Sinclair, The Blaze, Newsmax and other Pro-Trump outlets. I say nothing is going to happen for now until Trump does the next rant and has bigger implications.

In case no one's noticed, George Will is no longer at Fox News. He & O'Reilly got into a nasty fight over "Killing Reagan." Will had some very harsh words about the book, and then spoke them to Bill's face on The Factor. That was the last time he was on Fox. He's now a commentator at MSNBC.

MSNBC is a far better fit for George Will. That guy never fails to use a ten letter word when a three letter word would do.

Maybe you mean PBS. The modern day William F. Buckley.

The same could be said of Juan Williams and Britt Hume.

Now CNN is still fighting over Trump's CNN video Rant. What Trump is the modern day Wally George who happens to run the White House.

This is still a trending topic. Obviously will be prime topic on the conservative talk shows.

Yet many of these same people wanted to prosecute Madonna or other Hollywood stars when they threaten their guy. Hypocrites?

Well if you want to understand Donald Trump you have to go back to Wally George a former talk show host who manage to do rants for 1 hour on KDOC Los Angeles back in the 1980's. Before Fox News and Sinclair even considered attracting conservatives to their venue Wally George did rants similar to Trump only difference here is that he did the rants on Local TV airwaves.

Hey all were seeing here is Somehow President Trump running with Wally Georges playbook yet we have no connection that Wally George and Trump knew each other. The recent tweets President Trump said about CNN and MSNBC reminds me of how Wally George would do confrontations against his opponents on his Los Angeles talk show on KDOC 56.
