3 is the Magic Number in Chico, Ca!

So 107.5, formerly The Point, is now stunting at Radio Gaga. The flip to Top 40 CHR will take place Monday, with the announcement of the lineup coming soon. Elvis Duran and Ryan Seacrest are expected to be some of the personalities that the new station will carry.

3 weeks ago Chico couldn't handle 1 Top 40 station, is there ANY way it will be able to sustain 3? If not, who will survive?

101.7 and 107.5 had the exact same playlist - Hot/Modern AC. This past week, 101.7 KISS debuted some local jocks, sounding heavily voicetracked and facebook-ed, although I think some may have flown down from Boise to get drunk at the many St Patrick Day Parties in Chico (only 60 drunkards arrested this year !!).

107.5 had the live Dial-Global satellite Hot AC staff until sometime Friday afternoon. Now it's constant Lady Gaga songs, updated station IDs ("107-point-5, Radio Gaga"),and hype for "free tickets to her sold out show" in Sacramento. Details are promised @3PM on Monday. Gaga hits Sacramento on Wednesday, so that's a very short window to give tix away, since Sacramento is at least an hour away and winners will have less than 48 hours to get tix from the station.

Elvis Duran has been on in the AM for several months, on 3-hour tape-delay, with no chance to ever win any contests or call-in, even though Elvis+Co give out the number to call every 5 minutes and hype all their contests. When I tuned in on Wednesday, there was some sort of tape failure. No Elvis Show, just announcements between every song: "You're listening to Elvis Duran on The Point", then some commercials and music, but never any Elvis+Co. This happens about once a month. I don't know if someone oversleeps or its an automation problem or a function of bad syndication. On Thursday AM, there was no sound at all on 107.5 (again, something that seems to happen every couple months....just dead air for hours). I tuned to jockless 101.7.

102.1, the former oldies channel, is very hip-hop-y. I suppose that is what is popular Top 40 in 2011.

Also, the former FM Right Wing Radio (96.7) is now broadcasting "oldies" in what sounds like a satellite K-HITS format (the hits of the 60s/70s/80s). I don't know when it changed, but I heard the station playing at several stores in Chico. The station previously did simulcasts of the local news, which was nice. Now they are filling the void for folks upset about 102.1 going gangsta.

Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Kesha, Britney, Chris Brown, Nelly, Taio Cruz, Keri Hilson is all that station seems to play.

You're right. 102.1 totally went gangsta.

Has desperation Radio come to the Chico radio dial? Is it panic time in the city? Or is this just another case of monkey see monkey do!

Yes, those artists get played, but also they play rap, or at least that's what I call artists like Snoop or TI or B.O.B. or T. Pain or Marshall Mathers or any music that has a male voice speaking words, rhyming (or not rhyming) nonsensical words, or using street language. I have tried to listen a few dozen times and enjoy the Rihanna and Gaga and B.M. and TikTok, but inevitably, they play the versions that have random male raps tossed in to sound hip and give "street" cred. 101.7 and 107.5 both played all the artists you cited, but as musical artists, not with bellowing male rappers.

I didn't listen to 102.1 oldies either (except when they turned into Christmas 102.1 each winter). I'm sure the new playlist will attract a much younger, more profitable demographic. Heck, I noticed more kids now hanging out at the Corning McDonalds, where apparently the only station they can receive is 102.1, whether it played Oldies or Top40.

Power 102 is musically a simulcast of Power 94 Redding, which isn't even that Rythemic.

Last Thursday I was on my way to Mt. Shasta and was listening to both "Powers" and the music was different at the time I was listening... around 10:00am - 12:00noon.

The Same? Or Different? Or Both?

The on-air DJ from Redding was quoted in the Chico ER as saying it would be a simulcast (something like "same songs, same commercials"). Maybe they only simulcast certain dayparts. I haven't heard any live presence on 102.1, but I only listen until the rap starts, which is usually after one song. I did notice that new 102.1 is still playing a lot of the same commercials that oldies 102.1 played. Lumberyards and mechanics/contractors love Top40 too (not?) !

Re: 3 is the Magic Number in Chico, CA

Radio Gaga went away sometime Sunday night/Monday AM. 107.5 had rebranded as Now1075 when I tuned in at 2AM Monday morning. Strangely, most of the "Now" formats I have heard (including Sacramento Now100.5) is modern Hot AC. In Chico, the NOW station is the Top40, complete with the rap and hip-hop, though decidedly less so than 102.1 based on 2-3 hours of on-and-off listening on Monday. (And conversely, the KISS station - 101.7 - is decidedly Hot AC).

Now1075 starts off with the three-hour tape-delay of Elvis Duran (he's been on the station for a year). On-Air with Ryan Secrest is middays, complete with gossip breaks. Local AM host/weatherboy Rob Blair is holding down the fort in afternoon drive. So, there NOW appears to be some local presence on the air for at least a couple hours. Also nice that AM drive and PM are both hosted by openly gay personalities. (And then there is middays with Ryan, cough, cough).

They played two back-to-back Gaga songs @5PM-ish. Caller 107 won limo ride to Sacramento and floor seats to see Stephanie. I guess they only gave away one set of tickets?

No announced website or facebook yet.

Also, just FYI, the 107.5 signal is awful in North Chico. They simulcast on 107.9.

with all these station it's bad news for zrock. They don't compete musically obviously but it will take some of the listeners as additional competition plus more competition for cell phone only households will cut into total recorded audience size. with that zrock needs more TSL from fewer sampled listeners to keep up in the ratings.
