3 Pirates Written Up by the FCC

uh, sure! We have one still operating in Bridgeport. And something funnier than that was I called the engineer of Lite 106.7 to tell him that his station is getting interfered with in Fairfield County and he appears to not care. I guess if you're not in New York they don't care if you're part of their audience or not.

Bill,
What frequency is the one in Bridgeport operating on?

They are operating on 106.5 and I had picked them up as far North as Monroe. I can also get them near the Shelton/Stratford line before the Derby translator for WSHU on 106.5 captures my receiver. I haven't done any other testing for coverage but the fact I picked them up 15 - 20 miles North indicates to me they are certainly using some significant power.

This Pirate know as One Love Radio on 106.5 has been reported to the FCC many times.
The FCC has shut them down about three times.
The Pirate then relocates to a new location in about a weeks time and comes back on the air. He seems to rent the third floor of three family houses that are up for rent
for his Pirate operation.

I heard 90.9 in New Britain today, they have been using a much reduced power level lately, but still as far south as the Truman overpass is much more than part 15 allows.

That means those 3 pirates will stay on for years. If you look at the enforcement database, you'll notice that most pirates get several NOUOs before a NAL is issued, if one is issued at all.

I heard the 106.5 in Bridgeport in the summer of 2008. It was intermodulating with WEBE 108 on 105.1, which means it must also be transmitting on 109.3, right inside the aviation band. The pirate is the first station to pop up when I seek down from WEBE 108, so it must be very strong near the WEBE smokestack.

I have notice something other then WAAP Boston and WPUR Atlantic City on 107.3. last summer. What I've heard ,It was no music,It sound track of old TV shows, movies. or radio shows.I have not checked what other legit broadcaster on 107.3, or is it one of those ipod transmitters with kicka$$ power behind it,The signal had a 4 block radius at my old apt here in Wallingford.Maybe I think it was a pirate across the street up on the 4th floor in the apt complex.Oh btw 94% of what the pirates play is crap music. the other 6% is awesome Hahaha.......

A 4 block radius is still part 15.
I had a part 15 FM TX when I was in High School, you could hear it 1/4 mile away.
It wasn't even full part 15 power too.

I have run extensive tests on Part 15 FM transmitters and when they were set to produce the maximum legal output as dictated under Part 15.239 they only reached about 300 - 350 feet at best.

Part 15 FM is not regulated by power, but on a field strength measurement. When my site first reviewed a Canadian transmitter it was discovered they had inadvertently set it for the Canadian limits instead of American. With the assistance of a local engineer I adjusted the Canadian unit to meet the maximum field strength of 250 µV/m at 3 meters per the regulations.

There are some popular kit transmitters that can output quite a bit more than Part 15 limits and I had heard some pirates even use a companion amplifier along with this particular manufacturer's kit transmitters.

It was interesting to note the difference in several manufactured Part 15 transmitters. Since I also had a few other transmitters that are used for bench references it was decided to test those while I had access to the meter. Most every stock transmitter was at or below the Part 15 limit - something a pirate would not find attractive by any means unless they modified the unit for greater power or to accept an antenna other than the one the unit was equipped with.

Hi all,Today I took a ride into my old neigborhood any check out if the interference on 107.3 is still on the air, what I found out is they are still on the air.the area is around the old Stanley Judd building which is now a apt/comdo complex on South Cherry Street here in Wallingford.the signal is very strong and goes to about Ward Street corner, where the old bar Mutt and Jeffs use to be.It sounds like it could be a part 15 but what they are broadcasting is soundtracks of movies not music.By geussing its probably in the 4 block radius range.

Perhaps if there is a nursing home in the area what you are hearing is one of those "Companion Radio" operations which usually have 3 or 4 FM channels with programming of interest to the residents fed into the building's in-house cable tv wiring. These often tend to leak out for quite some distance.
