That night was stinko. I had no internet connection at the time because my computer got tosted about a month before.

On the afternoon of 1-3-03 I put on WXSS Milwaukee and Will Calder was on. He played Daft Punk - Around The World and said something along the lines "Rest in Peace Energy. We'll miss you" I knew he worked there so I ran over to the library to see what was going on. My first stop: Radio-Info. On the Chicago board I found out that it got sold to SBS and was going to simmulcast WLEY. So I ran home and started to record. I must have made about 5-10 tapes within the last couple days of the format. Listening to the station slowly die was not fun at all. Normally I can't pick up WLEY because WVCY bleeds over it. But for some odd reason about a few minutes before the change over WLEY was coming in like a local. Talk about ironic.

Later the next day (1-6-03) we took a trip to Woodstock to visit my dad. The whole time I had Onda on. They must have played Juanes - A Dios Le Pido and Las Ketchup - Asreje 4-5 times over the duration of the time I was listening.

Since then, I've been getting my dance fix (when needed) off CDs, MP3s, www.energy98.com, Music Choice and XM.

B96 had those "Killer Bee Flashbacks" (Stevie B anyone?) and WKSC had Julian Jumpin Perez hosting Club Kiss with some dance (Its where I first heard Benny Benassi - Satisfaction for example) complete with the average computer crashes. But that later went under.

2003 was a bad year for station explosions. Other stations that went include:

WBVS "100 dot 7 The Bus" same month as Energy
WXSS "103.7 Kiss FM" the balenced dose of rock & rhythmic went bye the first Monday of February
WGLB "Retro Radio FM100" in May
WJTW "Star 93-5" later brought back on 96.7

Like when most stations change format or something, I clearly remember the events.

If I ever get an HD radio that is able to pick up WBBM-HD2, It'll be interesting to hear.<P ID="signature">______________

> I wonder why some people hang onto the past?

I have never been one of those people to obsess about energy. However,...

I grew up in chicago. About a year before Energy exploded I took a job in the NYC metro area, and I just happened to be in town for a late holiday vacation around that weekend. And I heard the best 3 or 4 days of radio that I have ever heard n my life.

Chicago radio is a part of my blood. And I think anyone who is from here understands why Rock 103.5, the old B96, 92 Kiss FM, Energy, The Bus, and other defunct stations are so special. They were all so unique, and there is nothing like them anywhere today.

Alright! Im a part of 2 dead stations! lol

In memory I gave Cascada 'everytime we touch' a spin on WXSS-FM tonight.

Oh yeah....Jeremy, last I checked were still on the air. :)

I'm from another era and worked in Broadcasting primarily in the Southwest (Dallas-OKC-Tulsa, etc)and Balto-DC markets. The best radio station I ever worked for was KOMA in Oklahoma City. Those were the days when this 50,000 watt station had some of the best jocks in the US. Many went on to become huge successes in the industry; guys like Chuck Dann(Riley) and Charlie Tuna and Dan Lacy (names probably are not familiar to ya'll).

We still chat upon occasion but over time we began to understand that nothing is forever. I am saying that maybe energy radio is not a good fit here. Maybe energy radio might work in NYC because of such things as the Puerto Rican influence which is not a prevalent here.

"I wonder why some people hang onto the past?"

Because sometimes, something or someone special happens. Lujack was special. WLS in the 70s was special and yes, Energy was special. There have been a lot of great moments in Chicagoland radio history. And in the ho-hum world of corporate radio, it was great to hear something different.

Perhaps Energy wasn't your favorite. But judging by the postings on this board, the station was a favorite of some people.
