3 years later, why?

I've asked this before, but here we go again, it's almost 3 years later and Shine 96.7 is still on the air? If this thing ever going to go away? It's so canned. Numbers are awful. They are virtually identical to a WLFJ or WMIT and can't begin to compete. There are so many other options that could do better and they keep this? They could get a translator in Spartanburg to help the signal over that way.

I am thinking the only thing to keep them from changing this is the Gamecocks? Or is it because they don't want something that requires an additional programmer? There is always premium choice and voicetracking though. The USC contract is up after this season, will be interesting to see if they can keep it on 96.7. I guess they are using that for income.

What will it take to blow this thing up? The market needs change.

I couldn't agree more. 96.7 would be a good tryout for a full blown Urban/Hip-Hop in the market. Greenvile could use it seeing as they aren't able to receive WPEG out of Charlotte. If not Urban, why not try the "Radio" alternative format? Just my opinion of course. ;)

Yeah, an Urban would be a good choice since that's the biggest hole. If not that, maybe some kind of rock again? It got a 2 share for them at least. Some kind of top 40, maybe adult top 40? CC has launched top 40's in markets on smaller signals recently even with strong competition...

I guess I'm a minority but I hate to see a signal wasted so much, especially in a market like this that doesn't have a lot to choose from. The signal isn't as bad as it looks on paper and has more potential. Wake up Clear Channel!

96.7 is a 2 share station at it's best no matter what format. imo some formats require more interaction with listeners than others to be successful and clear channel is not going to hire people for a low power station in those formats that require being in the community to make an impact they could put on clear channel premium choice and run it with the people they have i don't think they would put on a format that would hurt their 3 class c stations. some form of rock would be safe and would sound better with usc sports and might move their other stations up in the ratings

I honestly think that stations like this take away some listeners from non-comm stations, causing them to lose support. I've heard even from those I talk with that listen to the station (96.7) that they like that they're not always asking for money and stuff. This can be damaging to the other stations that are operating as a faith-based ministry.

That's a good point but I don't think WLFJ or WMIT should be too afraid of a station getting like a .6 share.

I wonder if 96.7 will get USC again with their contract up after this season. Entercom may want them back next year, maybe on WORD or Rock 101(where it would fit well).
It's easy to run a rock or CHR station on a signal like this. I've seen CC do it in other markets. Syndicate mornings, voicetrack middays and afternoons, and maybe get somebody in for nights that will work for nothing. Get one of the other PD's or the OM to look over it. The main formats I would stay away from if I were them are classic hits, rhythmic/hot AC, country. Nothing else could really hurt the other 3 FM's.

college sports is a ratings disaster usc is lucky to be on fm in greenville. word is a possibility but they cant stray too far from their conservative talk image. maybe clear channel put in a right of first refusal in their contract with usc. 101.1 is not going to carry usc basketball which 96.7 will. i think usc is safe with 96.7.

A lot of people were glad when USC signed on 96.7 because it was much better than 1330/950. I do agree with you that they will stay at 96.7 if they can't get anyone else to carry the basketball.
I do hope this station changes formats and gives the market a little more variety. Rock or CHR would be the best for the cluster...anything is better than being the 5th, 6th, whatever religious station. 96.7's signal is pretty good for a class A around here but I would suggest a translator like 98.1 has towards the east.
