30-2

I did a rescan, and I picked up a channel, 30-2. It's on the same 30 as 29 and it's showing color bars. What will this channel be?

He's in Dallas. It's a sub of KMPX.

If I'm reading SiliconDust correctly, it has no PSIP.

Never saw it. They may not have left it up very long. Or it could be visible only with certain TVs or converter boxes. What equipment are/were you seeing it with?

It's possible that some converter boxes will show this as 30.2 even though they aren't "supposed" to. I've noticed minor bugs in several boxes that can occasionally show incorrect subchannel numbers.

It may not be a bug if the station wasn't transmitting PSIP. Some boxes are reported to pull up stations by the RF channel and "program number" if there is no virtual channel table.

I have not been able to see this subchannel at all. I suspect it was only up for a brief period of time. My antenna will get most anything from Cedar Hill except for KHPK, the 300 watt VHF digital LPTV station.

I can confirm that KMPX's subchannel (30-2) is on the air and has been up for the past three days, 24/7. I have three ATSC-capable tuners and all of them get it, including a little Radio Shack 7-inch Accurian portable. I surmise that some tuners may not capture it due to lack of PSIP data.

KMPX ended up with what is the very best facility in the market. A great UHF channel (30) with a full megawatt at 1785 feet HAAT. This is one Cedar Hill signal that you can get with a paperclip antenna. :) For the moment, you're missing much on 30-2 since it's just color bars and no audio.

I do wonder what Liberman has planned for this subchannel. The LBI facility in Los Angeles (KRCA) runs Estrella on the main channel and Chinese language network (HTTV) on the subchannel.

None of these converter boxes show it:
  • Apex DT250
  • Channel Master CM-7000
  • Dish Network TR-40CRA
  • Philco TB100HH9

(All show 29-1 fine.) Haven't tried the Samsung STB yet.

Maybe they assume their testing won't confuse anyone because it won't show up on consumer equipment until they put the PSIP in. Obviously, this is sometimes true, but not always.

OK, the Samsung STB doesn't show it either. But I did manage to pull it up on the Apex DT250 with a simple trick. Instead of trying to tune in 30-2 directly, I just tuned to channel 30. This brings up 29-1, but it adds 30-2 to the box's channel table, so now I can tune to it.

So now I'm 1 for 5 with digital tuners showing this elusive channel.

30-2 is now 29-2

As of last night, it's now a real channel, 29-2, with real programming, Inmigrante TV (presumably catering to Hispanic immigrants to the U.S.) and it's working on all my tuners.

Ditto here. I did not see the earlier 30.2, but I see this just fine.
Also note that KSTR has added 49.2, just an SD version of their signal.
