OK ... 30 days of Coldplay. (If that's what you're into, it's good). But why is it also on U-Pop 29?

FWIW, I think the "real" U-Pop 29 is still available on XM Radio Online.

Well after a little investigation, it gets interesting:

I found this on the U-pop site:http://www.clubupop.com

You can still tune into your favorite UPop programs and world class presenters on WorldSpace Satellite Radio in Europe, Africa, Asia and The Middle East, on line at xmradio and on DirecTV channel 824 in the U.S. ColdPlay Radio comes to Upop 29 July 15th as Coldplay kicks off their North American tour!

So... only XM Radio (excluding online) gets the Coldplay. So why not just make a special channel for Coldplay (say, Ch. 51 ;D) and leave U-pop on the air? Before Jul. 15, XM promoted 30 days of Coldplay on 51, with not a single word about 29.

Since the audio for 51 and 29 maps back to the same source when identical programming is on both channels, XM gets to "add" a channel without further straining its bandwidth. My guess is that when the band and its money men came to XM, payola in hand, they insisted that Coldplay get a channel of its own and a channel that already was in some listeners' presets, to increase potential exposure to the pre-tour hype.

Why didn't XM tell anyone until a few days before? To minimize the extent of e-mail attacks and angry phone calls to its sub-minimum-wage off-shore CSRs, perhaps? I fully expect the Kenny Chesney channel, due to launch on July 26, to occupy an existing channel as well. With college football just around the corner to add to the sports bandwidth demands, XM most likely doesn't have the bandwidth to support another music channel. They're just keeping it quiet for now.

Money talks; bands and labels have plenty of it and XM needs it.

What was XM 51 prior to this? Now they've listed it as "Mandatory Metallica". Original name, no? haha

That's how they do the Christmas music every year. They "add" the Christmas channels and most of them map to a different channel so that you get the Christmas music on 2 different channels. DirecTv does that type of thing with TV channels too.

Explain:

Prior to the merger(still/pending merger)what ever,
there was some thing called COMPETITION!
and, xm, boosted over 170+ channels to....blah blah

any ways, since it is their network, xm-radio box, (etc)
...versus 'regular/terrestial/radio" where if a "new" frequencey
(after the study, etc) would "open" up, entities, radio groups, schools, etc
file, and the winner of 89.3 is....

however, why can't xm, just get into the 300/400s...
xm301
xm302
xm303...and, make every possible, nitch/format, and
sell the audio (at a high price) for what ever band wants to pay it ?

or, continue w/ the traffic, Add, another 75 channels, and include more cities....

what i dont get:
its not like, there is...some thing that would obect/its their "house system"....right??
