I'm surprised. WBVA will have no ability to do HD, and I was told by the engineer over there that the only reason the Fox station is doing HD is because Fox basically gave them half the equipment for nothing. I'm quite surprised.

I'd hate to be WDRL right now. That means they'll get My if they don't sell first, and despite the increased ad possibilities, the extra ads don't do much good if nobody will buy.

Don't count on WDRL getting MY. I would guess WDBJ-DT2 has a pretty good shot at that. Really, the best thing for WDRL to do is to sell to someone that can put a little money into the station. Regarding HD--as HD becomes more popular, WBVA can provide major cable systems in the area a HD feed via fiber, or they can dedicate one of their two digital transmitters to CW, leaving the other for FOX.

Why WBVA Is CW In Roanoke/Lynchburg

While HD does indeed seem to be one of the elements that the CW folks are looking for, the affiliation in Roanoke/Lynchburg is a bit more basic than that.

Look at the affiliate list. R/L is by far not the only market where CW has hooked up with well-run cable/satellite-only stations, and spurned rimshots and LPTVers, and scrappy stations with little money or which are in financial difficulty.

Look at Toledo, where CW went with Block Communications' "WT05", the WB affiliate only seen on cable and satellite...leaving bankrupt LPTVer WNGT-LP behind.

Boom. There goes CW for WDRL.

As far as HDTV goes, WBVA owner WFXR/Grant II may be "reluctantly" putting on HDTV with FOX's help on WFXR, but they're doing it, and will likely do it one way or another for CW. Meanwhile, WDRL has struggled to get its DTV stick on Smith Mountain.

WBVA is also very much like WT05 - a well-run full-time cable/satellite channel.

A better list

CW has started signing deals for lots of digital sub-channels in markets where full powered stations were available.

A more complete listing of the 30 can be found here:

I`m sure Fox`s "My" won`t be so discriminating in regards to 'DRL & 'NGT, if they haven`t pitched them already.

In WNGT's case, we're talking about a station that has poor engineering, outdated equipment and still using the old UPN shapes logo in their ID (despite their website using the newer one). Whether or not WNGT goes "My", I won't be surprised if they remain "UPN48" -- they're that derelict.
Edited by rugrats1 on 03/29/06 03:53 PM.

WNGT/Toledo, WBVA

This assumes that the Cornerstone Church doesn't finally take over the bankrupt station, and flip it to religious programming.

Or, perhaps...since Cornerstone operated secular 96.9 FM in that market as a dance format station in the past, they'll run religious programming during the day and My at night...much like Macon, GA UPN/CTN affiliate WGNM.

That is, assuming they can get past MNTV's "steamy telenovelas" with enough sexually related content to drive any preacher nuts. :D

In general, it appears CW is avoiding hooking up with such marginal operations if at all possible. WDRL "UPN 24" in the Roanoke/Lynchburg market is similar...when I was in the area, it looked like a public access cable outlet at times! WBVA, in the meantime, looked like a standard over-air network affiliate, and even managed a low cable channel positioning (5) on most systems.

Behind "WBVA"

> Can anyone share more on this station? Is it cable only?
> OTA? Channel # i tried the FCC TVQ but it kept coming up 0~
> Just wondering~

"WBVA" is over-air branding for a subchannel of WFXR/WJPR's DT sticks. WFXR/WJPR is the FOX affiliate (combo) for the Roanoke/Lynchburg market, known as FOX 21/27. (WFXR is on 27, WJPR is 21.)

"WBVA" also enjoys wide cable carriage, usually on cable channel 5...they have sub-identified at times as "WB 5". It is also carried on both DirecTV and Dish Network in the Roanoke/Lynchburg locals package.

There is no analog OTA component to "WBVA", even as an LPTV/Class A.

Does anyone happen to know who gets the CW affiliation in Denver, I'm hoping for Channel 2 KWGN. I think the one who doesn't get the network, KWGN-2 or KTVD 20 should go back to being a truly independent station, just like the good old days. Between the WB and UPN I watch UPN for one show WWE SMACKDOWN! The rest of the time UPN stands for Unwatchable Programming Network. Don't watch WB at all

And KTVD 20, Denver's current UPN affiliate, will (barring complete and utter shock) will become the MY affiliate in Denver. In the unlikely event KTVD 20 does not become the MY affiliate, there's really nowhere for it to go besides KDVR-DT 31.2 but again, this is highly unlikely.JMHO...Cheers :) Pat

I don't care where the MY network goes, as far as I'm concerned, we don't need it here in Denver, there's enough crap on tv anyway. We don't need anymore tv networks. WB and UPN folding are proof of that. The whole idea behind a tv network is to put something on that people will watch, and obviously WB and UPN couldn't do that, or they wouldn't be going out of business. I don't give a damn about america's next top anorexic. the only show i would watch on the new network would be smackdown. So keep that, flush the rest down the toilet, and leave us with just four networks. NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX, which by the way wouldn't be there if it weren't for the simpsons. As far as "MY TV" goes, well if they are truly going to live up to the name "my tv" then I should be allowed to program it!

Wow, I'm kind of surprised it hasn't already affliated. Maybe they're expecting it to tank(which considering it's programming, could likely happen with the decline of the soap genre).

Yeah, the new CW is KWGN, because it's a Tribune station.
Be careful how you say that. Tribune Broadcasting owns WPHL-TV (WB) channel 17 in Philadelphia. Despite that, CW will be heading to WPSG-TV (UPN) channel 57 of Philadelphia. There's two other stations connected to Tribune which aren't going to CW either. Here in Hartford/New Haven (rank #28), CW will be going to WTXX-TV (WB) channel 20 of Waterbury/Hartford. The station is operated by Tribune-owned WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford under a local market agreement. WTIC-TV ads and their 10 PM news are run on the station.

But what if, WHAT IF TBN didn't have their hands on WGTW? They would've been the My Network affiliate for Philadelphia, but WTXF could start a digital sub-channel for it.Meanwhile, here in Alaska, the CW will be on KIMO's digital subchannel; dunno if it'll slop over to Fairbanks and Juneau. KYES was expected to affiliate with CW, now it could either be an independent or My Network station (I'm hoping independent, in case My Network flops).Jonathan Allen
