'30 Rock' Live. Your Thoughts...

I never have really watched the show to begin with, but it seems like anything that's from executive producer Lorne Michaels out of Studio 8H is destined to not have the funny. Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Tina Fey made me smile a little bit... but other than that, is was a bomb IMO. I only saw the west coast version, and it seemed like they had it down like a well-oiled machine with no major mistakes.

??? Why did they go with LIVE twice?
That was weird. So many differences.
What is NBC doing?
Playing the spot the differences game?
I guess they could give some fancy prizes away for it.
That would have been both smart, and a great contest!

Outside of that, wouldn't it have been cheaper to be live for the east and re broadcast for the west?

Good for them for giving it a try. Something different anyway! I kind of enjoyed it!

Agreed. I enjoyed it, and think it was a worthy experiment. It's notable that a couple of the actors swung quite far afield from their normal portrayals of their characters - particularly Alec Baldwin. Tracy was embarrassing with those attempts at "breaking." Even his clueless character couldn't be that clueless.

Honorable mention to John Hamm for the short bit in which he's sexually assaulted by the female hand that's been grafted onto his arm. Hilarious!

I watched both episodes on hulu. It definately had a different feel to the show. I loved the openng line from Baldwin, when he asked Lemmon, something seems different here.

The set where Baldwins assistant sat, is that the set SNL used for David Spades, Dick Clark Receptionist, character?

Watching some of the credits, looked like an SNL credit roll.

BTW, I enjoyed the show.

You must be from the East. You don't deal with 3 hour old news and morning sports broadcasts. Kudos to 30 Rock for giving the West Coast some love. ;)

The promos for the LIVE show always had a fine print disclaimer "except in the Mountain
Time Zone" or words to that effect. The Mountain zone gets even less love from the nets
than the left coast does, as a rule.

The one exception I recall was when Drew Carey's ABC sitcom aired a live episode, and did
it three times--live to ET/CT, live to MT, and live to PT. It was during standard time, so
AZ (and IN at the time) also got a live show.

Worthy experiment. Please don't do it again.

Both versions seemed more like SNL skits than a sitcom. The actors were too often playing to the studio audience and pushing joke lines to get a laugh. This is not uncommon with many three-camera shows filmed in front of an audience. The "experiment" made me appreciate 30 Rock as a one-camera show.

Scrubs did an episode as a three-camera show in front of an audience to make fun of such shows.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. I'm in the east and don't expect to have time to atch the west version. This computer is too slow for video and has no sound. I mostly enjoyed what I saw.

True, the mountain zone is an afterthought by the networks. Perhaps for good reason, the population is so small compared to the other zones. Denver is in there, but that is about it. But even when 60 minutes says it will be next except on the west coast, they really mean except on the west coast and the mountain time zone, but they never mention the latter. Still it's a pretty good system with the east coast feed serving the central one hour earlier, so essentially one feed for most of the country. The mountain zone relies on a delay of the east coast feed, and west coast has their own. Where it really gets interesting is when the cable nets offer up their own recipe, which can be confusing.

Ahem. Ever hear of Phoenix? TV market #12. (Denver is #17.) ;)

No offense meant...I have always been confused about the time zone with AZ not going to daylight savings time. Does this effect the tv sked? Those who don't live there really have no idea.

You're right, it is AWT (Arizona Wacko Time). ;D

Generally speaking, the OTA network affils keep the same schedule pattern year-round for
the entire broadcast day, such as 7-10 PM for prime. Only the length of the delay changes.

Shows on cable networks will air an hour later (than present) from November-March,
whether it's east coast feed, left coast feed, or a single feed cablenet.

Certain "live event" shows on OTA (NFL for example) also slide +/- an hour twice a year.

Generally, it only affects live broadcasts, such as sporting events. Right now, NFL games are at 10am and 1pm; on November 7, it switches to 11am and 2pm.
