30 years ago: the day the music died

It's been almost 30 years since KQV switched to news - Oct. 15 to be exact. Just wondering if the current owners would allow them to do something like WABC does on Memorial Day. Doubtful, though it might help their numbers. It's probably alot to ask but I can still dream. Even if nothing happens, there is always the KQV tribute site which is quite impressive. Well, maybe you all can share some comments, stories, and memories of a station that helped pave the way for some great radio back in the day. I look forward to reading your responses.

From what I understand, the current owners (Calvary, Inc.) have been approached repeatedly to do such a reunion, and the Scaife-Dickey response has always been in the negative. They say they've moved past that era in the station's history.

I guess I can see their point--did any houseladies petition John Rook to do farm reports and orchestras in the mid-60s? Did he acquiesce?

Still, it would be nice to hear. And a large number of the jocks are still alive and kicking.

Someone (maybe here, maybe at the Pittsburgh Radio Nostalgia page) mentioned the idea of a WTAE reunion or rewind weekend. Another idea to investigate.

Thanks for the nice comments on my website.

I have asked many involved at KQV about a reunion, even if only for a coouple of hours. While Frank Gottleib (nd) and Eric Selby (PD) are have both expressed interest, Mr. Dickey has declined. A couple of years ago a Pittsburgh Radio Reunion was discussed with Dave Labrozzi at 3WS. He has since left for Baltimore and it never happened. A number of local personalities are interested and some of those from out of town would return if it could be arranged.

An aircheck of the final night of KQV as music station is on the website.

I grew up listening to KQV, and have posted many of my memories on the Pittsburgh Radio Nostalgia board.. Sad to say, by the time they reached their final night as a Top 40 station, I was a diehard 13Q listener and didn't pay much attention, even though several people had told me they were changing format that evening.

KQV was a great station in its day, and fended off all competition (until 13Q, anyway) despite not having the big signal of WABC, WLS or even WFIL. That said, by late 1972 or early 1973, the KQV I knew and loved was gone. By 1974 it was "14K", and by 1975 it was unrecognizable.

There is certainly plenty of the old KQV in my airshifts on 620 KHB.

The Pittsburgh Radio Greats Reunion (as we once called it) was discussed by me and 3WS OM/PD Chris Ostrander as far back as five years ago. It never went anywhere due to budgetary reasons, Ostrander's departure, and the change of ownership.

As for "KQV Rewound," I think that would generate more attention than the station has seen in decades.

Your mention of WTAE prompts me to ask if there was any consideration
of changing the calls to the historic WCAE letters when the split
from Hearst happened? (Cleveland's 1100 has been back to their
original WTAM for some time now).

With the exception of WTAE, all of the major fulltime AMs in
Pittsburgh are using the same calls as they had from the
30's into the 60's.

And 970 (WWSW to WBGG).

I think, and the PRN message baord has more on this, but the WCAE calls were used at the time they changed, so they couldn't go back.

Plus, ESPN radio--no doubt--liked the "E" repetition in WEAE.

Re: Reunion

Reunions are tough things to pull off. Several years ago when McGraw broadcasting owned WEIR a number of people put together a Big 14, 1430WEIR whatever reunion. We just got on the phone, called everyone and had a nice Sunday afternoon gathering at the Weirton Holiday Inn. Later on when Priority bought the station they held a very nice 50 Year celebration in Weirton.

Last year I started talking again to Dave Strock, the original owner of WXIL in Parkersburg. He put the station on in 1975, making this year the 30th aniversary. Dave and I burried the hatchet and began e-mailing back and forth on a regular basis. One of the things we talked about was having a reunion in Parkersburg. Pick a weekend in the summer everyone who could come down for a weekend get together, golf, shopping what have you. We also toyed with the idea of trying to work out a deal with the current owners about having a WXIL on air reunion that weekend. Hey with modern day technology we could voice track the entire deal and still be out on the golf course!
Dave sent an e-mail out to all the staffer he had e-mails to, plus I made some calls. Only 2 or 3 were willing to come down, distance, bad blood you name it. Needless to say the WIXUL 30th year reunion never happened Maybe the only way we have reunions are listening to air checks and chatting on these boards.

Last I heard, and it may have been from the WIXZ memories page or from the Pittsburgh Radio Nostalgia forum, Terry Lee was living in Ohio farm country.

Now, interestingly, and I haven't heard this yet, there is a "Terry Lee" on WNPQ 95.9 New Philadelphia. It's a Christian station, in Ohio Amish country, which just happens to also be--GASP--Ohio farm country.

The same guy as the beloved WMCK and WIXZ nighttime jock?

Who knows? Just some Monday conjecture for you all. Haha!

Yes, and every night at 11, he plays "music for young Mennonites"

Not The Same Terry Lee

The Mighty Blog of Northeast Ohio Radio Fun(tm) has been looking into this, since some Pittsburgh area folks asked about it. It turns out that it's not the same Terry Lee. I understand that Pat Cloonan will cover it in his McKeesport Daily News radio column at some point...

And just to correct a minor point here - WNPQ is licensed to New Philadelphia, but it actually operates up in Canton. In fact, its studios are located a stone's throw away from Belden Village Mall in a commercial area of North Canton.

Regardless, I still can't receive it in Brunswick. It could be targetting to Mars for all I know (and I don't mean Mars, PA!)

I can, and it takes only a cursory listen to determine that the voice emanating from the cornfields of Lake Natoli is definitely not Pittsburgh's T.L., even allowing for age, FM processing, etc.

And, as he told "Vast Wasteland," while this TL been around Ohio radio for a while, he isn't the TL of McKeesport fame.
