30th Anniversary of Black Friday at 97 Rock

IIRC, it was around this time of year, 1985, when Taft Broadcasting shocked everyone down on Franklin Street when they announced within several minutes 97 Rock would be no more and become WGR-FM, an AC competitor of the then popular WBUF. It of course, failed miserably. I was there. Very bizarre moment - a whole staff unemployed(those of us on the AM side still kept our jobs).

Much to their credit, Rich Communications brought 97 Rock back a few years later. And much of the old staff. A happy ending. Except for the WGR-FM employees who then lost there jobs under Rich.

So there.

The triumphant return to 97 Rock was preceded by a weekend (or so) of nonstop construction-noise SFX (if I recall correctly — listening in from Rochester, at the time). On a smaller scale, I borrowed the stunt last summer before the on-air unveiling of a “rebuilt” WGSU. I definitely had 97 Rock in mind … (so I hope I’m remembering correctly … and giving proper credit!). Radio format flips used to be so much fun back then!

A format change would be welcome. Most Classic Rock formats in the country
are clones of each other and painfully bad.

Buffalo seems to embrace mediocrity. The Sabres have become a
dumpster fire under the Pegula ownership and yet he is praised as a
wise Saviour. The bar is set really low...

The guy is praised as a savior because his fracking money allowed him to buy a football team and keep them in Buffalo, usually by people who want fracking banned.

Mind boggling.

So, he got rich by ravaging the Earth.
Now he can get richer with the help of gullible people who buy
Hockey and football tickets.

The sports station can discuss both teams never ending
"Rebuilding" process. Mind boggling, indeed...
